I disagree with this statement, beating up bottom 2 sides (and being 5/5) will tells us that at just over the mid-way point of the season we are rated in the middle part of the table with potential to go up and potential to go down. 

I think you're severely underestimating what wins over teams we "should" beat will have on the team.

Port Adelaide performed at a high standard tonight after a 4 day break

Thr MFC over many years has often chosen when to go and when not to, other clubs just get on with it

Definitely won't disagree on this point, in my entire time of watching Melbourne there has been one year where you can expect every week we will out in a solid performance. There will always at least one or two matches that utterly embarrass the club and it's fans.

Fingers crossed we've had that performance for the year, for me though the response from the players will say a lot about them as a unit. They should be so disgusted by what they put up that they pledge to not let it happen again.

While I don’t disagree with your basic premise Pates are you sure the playing group has the ability. For most of the last four years we have been able to match it with the bottom half of competition but are sadly lacking against the better sides. 
While I have zero confidence in our FD I also wonder about our list being as good as we assume. 
perhaps we are just a bottom six side coached by average talents.

I also agree with this, all is not lost we simply must get to 5 and 5, then with a bit of confidence roll the pies.

We played pretty good footy for 3 weeks, almost beat the lions in a tough game, and we're lethargic and didn't turn up against the top of table team off a four day break so let's hold our nerve till after the pies game and see were we are at. Also worth mentioning is the fact we have had more disruptions then most teams so far and played most of the top teams

Goodwin needs a 50+ points win tomorrow against the Crows and must have a big win against North the following week in order to just start building some sort of credibility.  If the team can manage that, then they might just build enough momentum to get them across the line against the Pies; and if that happens, then he may have saved his skin for the time being.

Winning the next 2 games means nothing. Winning them and knocking Collingwood off might be in the right direction, but doing so with players genuinely putting in is essential. Even so, my concern is that this would all be a result of a collective backside kicking, and regression to the mean will occur before long.

Just got off the floor to reply. Fifty points would be great but I will be happy with a measured performance with individual and team improvement. The last thing we want is a manic game and runaway win.

That's a fair assessment.  Falling over the line against the Crows won't do anything for us as supporters.  I'll take a win over a loss any day of the week, but it won't give us much joy as we know we should be doing better, and it will be more of a negative outcome than a positive one.

Are you capable of giving them a spanking?  Probably.  Confidence would be pretty low right now, but a big win will do wonders in that regard going forward.

I seriously doubt we have the personel for a big win against any team. WB. And it is not helped by an average FD.

Was not what I would call a big win. A good one. I know big wins are less likely in this shortened game era but you would never approach a game expecting a big win from the dees because they are so rare.  This week we should win easy but most supporters will not be surprised if we lose.

This is the most pure draw we have seen, play each team once.

We started out playing WC in Perth after being told that the season could be over, a hard way to start. The eagles in Perth.

As of now we have played one game less than everybody except  druggies.

We have only played in our HOME STATE twice, which is also less than everybody else

We have played 5 of the top 6 teams.

We have only played 2 of the bottom 7 teams, Haw and Carl and we beat them both.

We have just played the top 2 teams in 4 days, nobody else has.

We got pansed by the ladder leader after a 4 day break. The effort was horrible, the skills nonexistant.

The next 2 games not weeks anymore will tell us where we stand.

Some great excuses listed here, as the Prez and coach have said we’re no excuses culture.

Fair call.  I wouldn't classify it as a 'big' win either, but it does show we've got the capability of doing it.

I would be surprised if we lost this weekend.  I really would be.  I'm very nervous about the game, but I think we will give the right response to the Port Adelaide game and the shellacking from the media (which was justified).  I'd be disappointed if we struggled over the line, but a win would be good for our confidence, although it would do little else, especially for the fan base.
