Is Alistair Clarkson worth a discussion

There have been plenty of examples of 'master' coaches turning into unmitigated disasters at new clubs. Pagan, Thompson, Worsfold, Malthouse (at Carlton), Blight. 

Off the top of my head, the only recent examples I can recall that have come anywhere near a flag are Maltouse at Collingwood and Ross Lyon at Freo. 

Clarkson has a damn fine record, but he won his flags on the back of an incredible list that he built from the ground up. Taking charge of a new team and steering it to a flag is a different task altogether.

If U think about it most of those coach's heart won't in it, pagan was in it, but he came, then the blues got hit with the salary cap penalties, Thompson came in at a hard time, Worsfold was only doing it until anyone was stupid enough to want the Don's job, Malthouse only wanted to prove Eddie wrong, blight was coaching the saints from Gold coast, spent the whole preseason by proxy. Clarkson has become lazy, taking short cuts,  he has not got the will power to start from  the bottom again. But our list can turn very quickly, just like port, they have been no where in 2018 and 2019.

Malthouse went to Collingwood after winning the Eagles' flags and still managed to pull out a flag, so there is a precedence. 

That's more to do with Ken Judge getting games into the next group over 2 years.

The parallels between Port and MFC are interesting. Made a prelim (2014) from outside the top 4, were widely tipped to be a premiership threat the following year, then churned out a few thoroughly underwhelming years outside the 8. Coach somehow survives, top up with some young talent in the draft, and here they are a few years later, odds on to make a grand final.

He was obviously a poor decison maker.
Got sprung gambling on games, then got tangled up in the Essndon drug saga, and then accepted the position of head coach of Melbourne.

Whoever takes this job on would have to be up for abit of career suicide.
The issues with this club are far deeper than the coach.

Critiquing the coach is fine, but this sort of stuff is lowest common denominator.

That said, I agree wholeheartedly with your final sentence. Coaches are just one piece of the puzzle - if those other pieces aren't in place, Clarko won't make an ounce of difference to results.

Sure, but I meant more that Malthouse managed to win a flag at Collingwood after winning two at the Weasels.

Clarkson might view the MFC job as a tasty challenge, but does he have the burn? What does he have to prove?

Whereas a guy like Brad Scott has the urge to prove himself, the tactical nous, the c---, and with our list, he won't be starting from scratch.

Was it last year Clarkson smashed his hand through the wall? I think his DNA is pure competition and drive, would be very happy to get him.

Voss after over rating his list initially got the sack when Brisbane were on the improve. Also interesting re Scott, NM performance this year indicative of good job he did over a number of years with ordinary teams.

But unlikely Goodwin goes this year, however if Demons don’t make finals next year, he won’t last and Clarkson would be free!
