Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

McCartin - should we consider recruiting him ??

Recommended Posts

Paddy McCartin is effectively delisted by St Kilda. Do you guys think we should recruit him for 2021 season. Seems to be over his concussion issues and wants to continue playing. Only 24 years of age.

Maybe Richardson should have some input on that matter.

BUT only if the Demons change their game style and kick inside 50 more accurately.

49 inside 50's for 8 Goals is deplorable.

McCartin could add versatility and we could swing T Mc back to CHB

I’d feel like we would be both taking on a risk and personally doing him a disservice by picking him up and prolonging his career. Sure that might be unfair - it could be seen as taking away a choice that is his to make, but I just don’t see why anyone would just keep on rolling the dice on a living person’s brain.

All the potential footy related benefits just feel meh to me in comparison to that. Just find another player who isn’t another hit away from having his life erased.

He may want to play again, but his family don't think he will ever play again.

You'd think that the proposed reduction in list sizes would be enough to put the kibosh on this idea gaining any traction.

So it is OK to recruit Bennell with his background and it is OK to hang onto Brayshaw with his concussion issues but it is not OK to recruit a guy like McCartin who in his words is over his concussion issues..   That make stupid sense... NOT !

Bennell has proven already to be an elite talent when fit

McCartin has proven nothing.

And please dont bring Gus into this..

Hi there David. Yeah, I think there are some points of difference between these three examples you've thrown up. In regards to Gus I think the fact he was already our player and that we used a very high draft pick to get him meant that we were definitely going to go the distance in working through his issues. As I think St K also tried to do with Paddy. List sizes not being a concern in either case at the time.

As for Harley, had Covid-19 hit twelve months earlier and list sizes already been reduced it's quite likely that he might be in a similar situation to that of McCartin where the risk versus gain factor has bigger consequences if you get it wrong.

I don't think anyone is blind to the possibilities should anyone take a punt on him and make it a success and it sure is tempting with Darren Burgess onboard (although I'm less sure about his work with concussions) but it comes back to the anticipated reduction in squad sizes for me but let's wait and see.

We already have recruited someone with long term concussion issues in Kolodjashnij. I'd argue that the McCartin's concussion issues are worse because they have been more regular and him having more time off with no improvement. I think that McCartin also has some genetic predisposition to concussion as it seems his brother also has concussion issues. I wouldn't extend Kolodjashnij's contract and I wouldn't recruit McCartin because there's close to 0 chance it'll get better.

Paddy needs to focus on the longevity of his life that doesn’t include footy

I think that’s a lot easier said than done when you’re a young man trying to live out his dream. That’s why I think the clubs should take the choice out of his hands.

How could he know for sure he was over his concussion issues? He might just be over it until he gets a rough tackle that makes his brain bounce around his skull again and suddenly he’s spending another month in a dark room, unable to string two words together with his girlfriend looking after him while wondering if this is the time he doesn’t get better?

We got told the MFC were all over Kolodjashnij’s concussion issues too. More neck related, they said. Then he gets an innocuous knock early in the season and he’s missing in action with not much explanation from the club for a season and a half. I take “it’s all fixed” with chronic concussion issues with a grain of salt when there’s no way anyone can be sure until the next event.

I’d have said the same about Brayshaw if his issues had continued on. His seemed to be more about repeat direct hits though, which were addressed with technical changes to the way he approaches contests (ie not head first) which seem to have ironed out the problem. It’s when the player seems to get concussed from innocuous contact that you really have to worry.

It’s different with Bennell because it’s his calves, not his brain. If he wants to risk shredding his calves by stringing out an AFL career then yay for him. I wouldn’t extend the same autonomy of decision making to McCartin because the quality of life impact of a damaged brain is so much more severe than that of a calf.

To me it’s not about footy. Others have raised stuff about KK clogging the list and whatever, but I don’t give a toss about that. If I was a decision maker at the MFC I’d be worried about making a decision that has a higher than normal risk of destroying a young man’s future entirely. There’s no way I can see past that.

With or without concussion issues he’s just not very good, at all.

Would be absolute desperation and madness to even consider it. I expect to see him sign next week.

It is a lot more involved than concussion, and it has nothing to do with his diabetes either.

In addition to a stalled development and significant health risks/issues, I'm not convinced he's a good enough player to succeed at the top level.  He was never a big goal kicker or accumulator at Jr level and he doesn't seem to have the speed, agility or tank to make a big impact at senior level.

If he does come back, I would say it'd be StKilda that gives him the opportunity.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

    HIBERNATING by KC from Casey

When they locked up the rooms for summer at the end of last year’s football season, the rooms gathered cobwebs, the atmosphere became dense and the place developed a sleepy feel. They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. By the time they worked out it was game on, their opponents from Box Hill had accumulated five goals and, if the game wasn’t over, it might as well have been. For a se

A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
