Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I was very impressed with how composed Viney was.

He gets maligned at times for his kicking, but he was clever last night.

I noticed a marked increase in the amount of protection awarded to the ball carrier/designated player around the contests and in general play.  This is an area of the game I’ve seen missing for some time, and I’m that guy you hear at the game regularly screaming out ‘Help your mate out FFS’ and ‘where’s the shepherd???’ when everybody handballs around in a circle to 1on1 contests. - That 1-2 seconds difference can make such a difference vs pure ChaosBall delivery up the ground.

A few stood out once I started paying attention (Harmes, Hannan, Viney and Pickett).

I really hope the review points these out and focuses on them - from memory the subsequent disposals were either short kicks to free targets who could then take their time and frame up the next move, or handballs to advantage that pushed us deeper into attack towards players that had managed to distance theirselves from their direct opponents.

Just a bit more on Hannan, he was a late starter, missed most of last year and has played less than 50 games. Reckon he is still maturing as a player.

Disappointing, we win a game and I tape the 9 Sunday Footy show and just when it is time for our game wrap up, Andrews comes on for more bad news and there is then nothing about the Dees. Oh well, we will just have to win our next game.

One of my biggest bug bears in the modern game KoD.  I loved the Kozzy one where he went for the chasing player with purpose.  The actual shepherd wasn't that effective in the end but just putting a body between the chaser and ball carrier gave our bloke an extra yard or so to work and steady with that next disposal.

Little things that add up to make a slight impact and might well be the difference on the day.

Maxy was great, BOG for me. Was everywhere and took the pack/contested marks we need from him. Great game.

Hey @jnrmac another win by more than a goal ;) one week at a time

Small steps Dr but good to see, Even Oscar had a very good game.

Much more composure, better selection, held on to the ball more. A lot to like.

A question for you: Why does it take us to be pilloried by the rest of the competition/media for us to respond?

Durwayne Russell has to be the worst and most annoying commentator on air. Every ordinary bit of play is “spectacular, awesome, magnificent, massive, unbelievable, superb” or any other over the top adjective he can think of. It is infuriating.

Yes! I noticed this too - in particular, two shepherds from Bennell, where he hand balled to a team mate and then shepherded the opposition player. There were a couple more instances too, around the contest. It has been conspicuous by its absence so far this year.

I haven't read all the preceding comments so I'm not sure if this has been mentioned but what I loved to see at crucial moments last night  and what gives me incredible pride is to see the game changing tackles and pressure acts from Hannan, from Vandenberg and from Viney.

Commitment, tenacity and ferocity. They've  got their critics, these three but I love those guys for what they did in those moments.

Jetta wasn’t even on screen for Rankine’s first 2 goals. Lockhart was on him for the first. Wasn’t clear for the second, maybe Lever.
He was on him for the third obviously, as well as his late missed point. The other late shot was from a poor free kick (from memory).

I think the Jetta criticism is a bit overblown. Far from his best game but he wasn’t our worst.

Ok I stand corrected Il,l review game and as as I have said Nev is a favourite!

O Mac seemed pretty upfront in an interview pre game. Many thought he was a tad unlucky after his R1 omission, he stated they wanted him to work on a few things before he came back in the side. Last night was a great example of an inclusion being justified.

Everyone sees plays throughout the game that stand out to their eye, in the second quarter O Mac hit a contest hard on the outer wing to cause a spoil, picked up the crumb and burst through a couple of tacklers and put us forward. A few moments later he made himself an outlet option out of the back 50 with a kick to advantage that led to a goal. A few clean marks also. Renewed confidence was wonderful to see from a guy that’s been bashed from pillar to post and not just from here. Like the team, it needs to be backed up next week but you have to start somewhere.

Couldn't believe it was him. Nearly fell off the couch.  But I loved it too.  Looked like a man all game.  Looks like he has had enough of taking criticism, realises he is actually a big mother [censored] and has had enough of not being a lock.  Bloody hope so.

That one where we caught the GC red handed in a perfect tackle with plenty of prior 10m in front of our goals infuriated me, in much the same way as the unpaid Dusty dropping the ball last week.

Reeked of gutless umpiring, yet it would have been paid every day of the week against us, particularly for one of their love child sides like Hawthorn, Richmond etc.

Agree. Umpires were horrible

Harley did that as well, he hand balled to a player and immediately made the block in the player that was pursuing him. Too often the hand balls our players make appear to be more about passing responsibility rather than the team “thing” to do.

If I had to guess (without being an expert) I feel like the 1-2 overlap is being more coached rather than the handball > shepherd.

Just on Kozzie, how good was it to see a Melbourne player have the intelligence to tap forward to Fritta rather than take possession? Definitely something we need to employing more of.

Bring on the shepherd & the overlap Pates.  More bouncing as well.  Many are losing that art a little too.

Also the hook turn and fake/baulk.

There are meat and potato players / forwards.  There's some very good players / forwards.

Watching Bennell & Kozzy (add a few seasons experience) you know you're watching the real deal.

I'm having a few issues with the afl website... anyway, can anyone post a link to OMAC doing this? Or at least give the time on the video when it occurred?

I can’t post a video but if you can get the AFL vid working it’s around the 11 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. Score result at the end of the play is a behind to vandenBerg.

It's clear that players from all teams are moving to position to receive the ball after they handball to another player A, rather than providing a block to ensure the player A has time and space to dispose of it effectively.  Leads to a lot of circular handballing and turnovers.  But it must work or coaches wouldn't have players doing it.   I'd have inexpertly thought it leads to players not bothering to block even when there would be no chance of them geting the ball back.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
