Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Would love him to remain with the club, looking at Jack last night, his speech showed how much of a toll this season has taken on him personally. He let slip that he and his wife almost left the hub to return home cos the stress of being new parents away from any family assistance was incredibly difficult. So any form of elation or lack thereof is acceptable to me.

The club has talked about being ruthless recently, but equally important, our club needs to recognise a culture and embedding it in. Happy with Gawn as captain, we want Viney staying, May showed how much he wanted to repay the faith to the club from last year, it's clicked with Petracca this year, and I think Jones getting one more year even as a significant milestone to defining the culture for this club. I am not saying gift him 300 games, but another year to work his [censored] off and to the milestone on merit!!!

... lets be ruthless, but lets recognise the fabric of club and learn from what is important to the club.  The Viney name means a lot to me as a supporter of this club.

This is a great post. ?

Then the problem is likely to mostly yours.

This year, Viney conceded 15 free kicks in 16 games. Let's say, for simplicity (even though it overstates it), that half of these were for holding the ball. That means that he was conceding a holding the ball free kick fewer than once every two matches. If it's even a problem then the impact of that is so extremely small that it's barely worth talking about.

Like I said, the problem is likely to be one of perception.

8 of those were in the last four games though, including 3 against GWS and IIRC each one was for holding the ball.

So I think the recency effect has kicked in on that front.

I also think it's correct to argue that Viney regularly takes on a tackler when he should instead have released the ball. I don't think that always shows up as a holding the ball free - it might result in a poor handpass or kick under pressure, or a turnover without a free kick, or even a free kick to him.

I'm 100% in favour of Viney staying but IMO there is improvement in both where we play Viney (i.e. midfield/forward split) and how he plays.

I applaud the posters who are vehemently opposed to everything Jack Viney does. It makes it so easy for the rest of us to dismiss them as having nfi when it comes to football intelligence!

I think that most people on here admire JV and the way he goes about his footy.

The two criticisms of him most cite, are first, that he tries to barge through players, causing free kicks against him and turnovers, when he ultimately tries to get rid of the ball, while being tackled and second, that his disposal by hand and foot is not great.

I agree with those two criticisms.

If that then leads you to conclude that I and others who share the same view,  have nfi when it comes to football intelligence, then right back at you, having nfi when it comes to football intelligence, and is proved by what you fail to see, of the way he is playing at the moment.

PS. Criticizing an aspect of a player's game, doesn't mean you don't like or value his other contributions, but rather it is recognizing an area that maybe he can improve, to enhance his game and thereby his contribution to the team.

No doubt our midfield mix needs a change up. Whether that is personnel or tactics.

If Viney left would we be better off? Not sure either way but probably not.  But what I am very sure of given time to think about it is that seeing Viney running around in another jumper would be a very sad day.

Hope he stays

Do we know the extent of Gus’s injury? If he’s potentially missing a fair bit of footy in 2021 then we will need Jack in the guts.

I will be pretty disappointed to see him leave and sicked to see someone with the name Viney going to the Cats.

Agreed, characters like Viney and Jones are a base you can build a culture on, which Melbourne has been dying for for my entire life following the dees. Weather they be at the end of their career or "in a form slump" according to many on this site, even though he finished 3rd in the b&f.

After a few texts back and forth with fellow d supporters during the season none of us could really remember someone getting cut in half and bouncing back up like he does, and those moments in big games show. I understand not many like to bring up 2018, (and im over it too at this stage) but he was herculean in his efforts coming back of injury remember. If the effort is there, which from him it almost always is, those players are worth their weight in gold, and i think it would be such an error from the club to let him go

Spot on. There isn't a Melbourne supporter who doesn't universally admire Jack's attack on the footy, his endeavour, hell his consistency. He is always giving 100% of himself, and that is an admirable quality.

That doesn't mean he is faultless or have no clear deficiencies. It also doesn't mean that the way he goes about his footy isn't sometimes detrimental to the overall outcome of our midfield performance.

If he stays, great. Although I wouldn't support him getting a 5 year deal. There are only 2 players on our list I would give those deal to, and that is Trac and Oliver. But, that aside, nobody here would  be upset if he stays. On the flip side, if he left and we got a really good outside mid in return, I don't think we would be worse off.

Would have thought the B&F would have been the perfect time to announce that he had signed on.

They never do that as they like to keep things separate. If he had signed though I'm sure we'd be hearing something about it very shortly.

The guy has been locked up in Qld with a 2 week old baby with no support from parents etc. Played a hellish schedule and missed finals. Time he had a little space. It won't kill us to wait for the decision. It's our pastime it is his life.

I bet he's still pretty [censored] about the captaincy being taken off of him. the leadership turnover we've had in the past 2-3 years has been way too much

but that's also a hallmark of Goody. too many changes.

I would never put you, or many others, in the "vehemently opposed to everything Jack Viney does" category Redleg. I was aiming my comments at those who show total disrespect to, and constant underrating of Jack's role and worth to the team.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
