Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I wonder who we would have drafted with the pick we traded for 27 year old defender May.

I tell myself it wouldn't have been Ben King just to feel better.

What a shambles!

Even if it wasn't, it would have been Bailey Smith. Best to just try and forget about it.

I know for a fact that we were trying to trade back into the first round for Zak Butters.

He's having a pretty solid career at Port so far.

No forward line coach either right?

I don't buy into them at all

If he doesn't play or coach, leave him alone. The board should provide additional match day coaching support for goodwon. He needs it badly.

Firstly, head coach/coaches report to Mahoney.  He participates in and signs off on coaching staff, game plan, trades and list management decisions.

Mid 2019 he had a coaching restructure, then a full blown coaching/FD review at EOS.  Coaches we have now is supposedly the answer to our disasterous 2019.

Our opportunity to change assistants was end of 2019.  We chose not to recruit a forward coach.  We chose to let go the experienced coaches (Rawlings, Jennings, McCartney), keep the rookies (Plapp, Chaplin) and recruited Richardson.

imv we didn't make the most of that opportunity: too many rookie assistants trying to support a rookie coach.

Saty, the current group in charge are not doing a very good job. That is a fact. Supporters have every right to air their opinion and suggest changes or ideas. Especially when they are being asked to shell out hard-earned coin on top of their annual membership, to help bail the club out. A club that has given very little the other way, in terms of value for money, over recent years.

Nigh on 13 years, 10 years in football admin.

From Wikipedia:

  • Assistant Coach (forward) 2008 to 2011
  • In September 2011, Mahoney was appointed Melbourne's Football Manager after Mark Neeld was appointed as senior coach.
  • In September 2013, Mahoney was appointed Melbourne's General Manager - Football Operations by CEO Peter Jackson.

When Pert had the FD review last year, I strongly argued on DL that Mahoney should not have been involved in the review of his own department; a department where he had been party to nearly every coaching appointment/departure and overseen list management since 2016 (half way thru Roos' last season) and could not possibly be objective nor independent.

The FD on and off field is of his making.

Not sure the length of his contract but assuming it was 3 years it would expire this year or next.

I think we both were pretty much wanting an external review.

Of course it's one thing to have a thorough review and another thing altogether to take action on it.

...but if things don't improve this year we will have wasted another year but will probably get that review...

I hope.

Impossible to know from the outside but I guess the first thing to establish is just what does he do? What are his core responsibilities?

1. Manages the salary cap
2. Manages the football spending - coaches, fitness staff medical staff etc
3. Controls the media access to the football department
4. Supports the senior coach with their duties
5. Has an overall plan for the football department
6. Executes trades/recruiting

What are his major accomplishments:
 - Landing a number of major player recruits
- Signing Darren Burgess
- Signing Goodwin and Alan Richardson (rightly or wrongly)
- Avoiding scandal or drama with the media

What are his apparent failures:
- Being reactive with player recruitment, we spent so much on tall defenders and wingers because we didn't have any developing. The overall strategy of loading the list with inside mids and slow flankers was very costly
- Keeping Dave Misson when he was a lame duck
- Apparently being very easy at trade time. He refuses to push when we have leverage for small gains that can add up
- Extending veterans - Garlett, Vince, Lewis, Jones extra years they were never going to perform in

But my biggest concern is this:
He wasn't a recruiter with a trained eye for talent. He wasn't an experienced coach who had coached his own side and either studied the technical side of the game or experienced the culture of coaching. He doesn't have successful business experience with an edge like the banker the Saints hired or lawyer the Swans hired, he was handed a 20+ Million dollar core business department to run because Neeld needed someone and he did a Harvard business course.

If he is good at his job it's because he's done the on the job learning and soaked up a lot from Paul Roos in 3 years and is bright and inquisitive and uses those study tours and connections to advantage. Otherwise you compare his CV to Neil Balme and what hope do does he have?

My current opinion is he's good at solving problems but not proactive about finding the winning edges we need. And when you've got a coach who's going from an advantage in 2018 to a problem now then that doesn't help that coach turn things around.

I would have chased Caracella hard as senior assistant, I'm still undecided on Goody, people who say there's been no change are off the mark. Results may still be disappointing but the players are trying to hold the ball a little to long to try and hit up a target.

The forward line is looking to have been made a little  more mobile, but whilst we're not at last years coversion % for inside 50s, it's still not great.

The defence needs continuity and unfortunately father time has caught up with Nev.

I couldn't care less about the North trade, I like what I have seen in Kossie, Rivers and Jackson.

Trades - The North trade happy

Lever - was showing goods signs before the knee but needs continuity although IMO the price was to high

May - turned up unfit but as above but after 2018 was desperately needed

Langdon and Tomlinson for me a little to early to call but like the 2 way running which we hadn't had previously

My hope was to target Casboult ( as posted on Dland) when he was OOC to give Tmac a chop out whilst Weid stayed in the VFL for another year or so, but such is life

You should join the MFC board Saty.

At least then I know for sure the club would be dead within 12 months and we would all be put out of our misery.

Nice attempt at moving the conversation. Demonland is a forum where supporters bring up a topic and then others can have their opinion on that topic. This topic is, "Is Mahoney the right guy"  Now it would be wonderful if our topics were, Dees win three in a row, Hogan on top of the goalkicking,  Demons get a home preliminary final, but that is not reality.  You gave the game away again with your,  face to face like men comment. I reckon the extend of you fronting an MFC official would be complaining about the bread on your cheese board. The only board that would have you.

If we continue on the path we are heading, then I would say we could start a thread that says 'not many involved at the club are the right guy', as you would expect heads to roll if we were to finish bottom 6.

However, who knows what this season holds right now?  Fixtures are up in the air, hubs are creating chaos... we have no idea how much of the season there is left to play, and what standard it will be if it goes ahead.

The only thing in their favour right now is that we have three games to go on.  One was a loss out West before restrictions took place (thus, the Eagles were a different proposition to the one now stuck in a hub).  We rolled Carlton by a point, and lost to the Cats by two.  Granted, we probably only played 2-3 quarters worth of watchable football out of the 8 played, but I think we need a bigger sample size before we start chucking these guys off the West Gate.

But questions will get asked, and rightly so, if we can't get our game together.  That will fall on Goodwin first, but you would assume others like Mahoney might step away as well to help give the club a bigger refresh at admin level.  I wouldn't be opposed to that as it would make sense.  To me, there is still some water to go under the bridge until we reach that point, but there isn't a whole lot of water left.

Spot on, Pennant.  People will bemoan the trade, we gave up next year's first rounder and blah blah blah.

Pickett is exactly the type of player we need.  Rivers has made a terrific start to his career and, while Jackson will take time, he is the prototype to the modern AFL player.  Tall, agile, smart and a good user of the footy for a kid his size.  He will develop and become a major part of our side down the track.

His trading has a stench about it, massively overpaying for the likes of an uncontracted Lever, elderly May and big reach in Pickett.

And banging on about how Hogan will be getting the highest value for a trade ever seen, then trades him for one first rounder, even if that turned out OK for us.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
