Very disappointed with the outcome, but sick of the carry-on on the other threads re how crap the team is, sack the coach etc etc.

i sense the frustration in the press conference that we are still struggling to put all the pieces together, but I think it’s close, and a bit more continuity and playing together will see us push us the ladder quickly. Just might not be this year.

can I just say that all of Clarkson, Hardwick, Hinkley and Buckley have been in the “sack the coach” club by supporters, the media, and ex players, presidents etc. none of us keyboard warriors really know enough about in the inner workings of 2020 AFL to know if anyone can coach.

However i thought today the backline looked pretty good. Before the game I actually thought that we were one tall short and was worried how we would cover Myers and Ablett at ground level, and who was quick enough for Rohan. Lockhart and Smith both made one or two errors but their versatility was a real plus today. Hibberd was better than he has been and I don’t get the hate for Lever. Thought he showed some glimpses that he might be getting back to form. Except for Ford’s mark, we didn’t get beaten in the air - but their goals were from hit up leads where there was not enough midfield pressure (unlike the tone we had for our I50 entries). All in all, I thought the backline was pretty good as a unit (given the number of AFL games that some have played and also together as a unit). 

midfield is a strength - despite Geelong  having a few all time greats, serviceable 200 gamers like Guthrie and Duncan, and Parfitt etc, we looked comfortable here.

our I50 remains the problem. Think we need another tall, and Bailey Fritsch to be third man up, not playing on athletes who are taller like Blicavs. That said I thought TMac competed much better this week, Hannan looked dangerous and Kozzie when he trusts himself more could be one the best small forwards in the comp - there is hope that things can change for the better pretty quickly.  Still need a lot of work in the entries, and in the end this was the difference.

not sure where Geelong stand, but they had a lot of experience and beat the hawks by 10 goals two weeks ago - so obviously they not complete crap.

i understand the frustration on this site, but  the lack of objectivity and negativity bordering on hatred annoys me.

cue the usual posts that I’m an apologist for the coach and club, got no idea, the reason why MFC have been crap for 50+ years etc, we are going to loose every game between today and when we deservedly go broke or get kicked out if the league etc etc

Yeah this isn't a good place to be after a loss. It's almost always the same and I keep telling myself to not even come here for a few days to avoid the worst of the toxicity, but I cant help it.

Equally, the over the top gushing after a decent victory is just as ridiculous, and at times laughable when then it's the same people that have massive melts after a loss.

This would be a lot more enjoyable place to be if there was a bit more balance rather than the constant swinging from one extreme to another.

I think there are enough wise heads amongst the leadership (as opposed to Demonland) to release that this year is a bit different, and not the time to make impulsive decisions. The end of next year will be the time for change if things are not substantially better.

Personally I think the majority of supporters just support, yes we would all like a bit of success, but footy is a game, doesn't impact majorly on your life if there is a loss.

If it does you really need to look at your life in general

I'm happy for you that you can detach yourself from any kind of passion or emotional investment in the game mate, but I don't think you speak for the "majority of supporters" if that's your approach.

It’s not too much to ask that your team isn’t the worst performing side over the last 18 months. I’m tired of being told to keep my head up. I wish the club spent less money on touchy-feely videos about being ‘back from hell’ and instead used the money on some forward line coaching.

Eek, it's just a game of footy, emotional investment in my family is much more important

i pretty much agree with the original poster. Personally, I was generally happy with the effort and unfortunately  a few individual mistakes or lack of experience cost us.  I think we need another tall in the forward line to help take the bigger opponents and hopefully give our mid size forwards a better chances when the ball comes in.  A bit more composure at crucial times and we win.  Great to see Rivers and Kossie  today, they look like they will  be very good players.

I agree with it all and yes we probably aren't that far off being a competitive team and yes we can all act like a bunch of keyboard warriors at times like this but here's what I know...

This year is unlike any year any of us are going to face in our lifetime, the same goes for the game of football that we know and love. The economy has had a massive sledgehammer shot taken to it and the sporting landscape is changing rapidly as a result. This has unluckily coincided with one of the worst follow up years to a successful finals campaign we've seen in years. Last week the club started a fundraising drive to help with the $5M shortfall due to COVID-19. We also still get help from the AFL.

The point I'm trying to make is that whether it's harsh on this playing group or not, we simply need results. What ever this season means to people it is a season where the members and supporters must be convinced we are still heading in the right direction, for fans and stakeholders because I tell you what after buying a trident level membership, not requesting that money back and then making a separate donation over the weekend because I feel like the club could well be on its knees I feel it is more than fair to expect this. 

Any other time I would understand the insistence of giving it time but we may simply not have it and it could well be do or die. And as for giving it till the end of next year and if things aren't better than make the changes, I sincerely hope we get to that point mate. 

People have had it with looking across the field and using the old line "Well they have a lot more experience than us" I've literally heard this for the last 11 years and it is getting really old! Why have we not developed these experienced players in that time? Why is it in 160+ years of existence we have 1 player with 300 games experience and 9 with 250+?

You made great points and I absolutely agree but when the sh** hits the fan and the musical chairs stop no one will be giving us more time.

Goodwin doesn’t have the balls to change it.
We are going backwards in that we cannot score over 100 minutes. It is a fundamental of the game.

They've had their peaks & troughs...but not like we have.

Hinkley & Buckley are far from over the line yet either.

...but the Goodwin rollercoaster is a concern.

Mahoney is another that must come under scrutiny.

They've got this year to sort it out...

Where is the brand they talk of?

Ultimately the only quantifiable, objective trait we have atm is the win:loss column. Go further than that and we are a shocking attacking side with a modest defensive streak. This is based on the resulting outcome of key statistics that show us winning the ball but being extremely poor with it. How you forecast around this as you have is purely subjective but "OBJECTIVELY" we are a poor team atm. The numbers reflect this.

I think it's great you see upside but the current outcome as a reflection of current performance is imo symbolic of Goodwin's coaching over 3+ seasons: predictable, lacking in structure, and ultimately unaccountable. That's my subjective analysis of his coaching. 

I think Goodwin is in trouble atm. It's a brand of football that is literally costing us. He has one more preseason. Season is obviously only just underway but nothing has changed despite a strong and relatively injury free list.

I agree with your post, i can see the fast ball moving game style we want to pursue and when it works it looks good, but we need to be able to change gears and tempo during game to catch the opposition out. If we can mix this chaotic style with some more controlled passages of play like hitting up leads inside 50 we will be very dangerous. I feel we have to work way to hard to score a goal and the opposition just seam to hit up a lead and score.

I have no problems with the selection this week although I'd like to see Weed and T Mac in together both flying for Marks

Who says people that are emotionally invested in footy aren't emotionally invested in their family? What a bizarre comment.

No one is saying there's not things that are more important, but you discount peoples emotions when you compare things in that way.

Which is exactly your personality type. Instead of criticizing performance of player, coach or club you specialice in criticising those who have an opinion.

When you have bled red and blue, your whole life, and watched as other teams seem to find a way to win flags, such as the hawks, cats etc

only after a few years, i think you have the right to be *#$$% off.

I welcome the positivity in the OP but disagree with the sentiment that the midfield is the strength when the OP also acknowledges the difference between our inside 50s and the opposition's. Our midfield doesn't defend and our disorganisation is as much a coaching flaw as personnel.

I’m with you, some of our supporters are a disgrace.

Objectively, the club needs all types of supporters to survive. Can you really blame people for getting frustrated, upset and emotional when the side is perennially embarrassing? 

As for the present state of affairs, the core of this side made it to the last four teams in 2018 and has since won 6 of 25 and is averaging less than 50 points per game in 2020. The coach is in his fourth season, this team has enough experience to be performing better. Is it any wonder there is some gnashing of teeth and instinctive coupling of this to umpteen years of mediocrity?
