Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

What happens to the draft in 2020

Recommended Posts

Three Vic boys names to watch out for:  (Likely outside top 20 picks and unaligned to clubs academy)

Josh Clarke (Eastern) - fast skilled wing or half back. Watched him in 2019 GF and was Easterns best (as a 17 yo). Needs a gym session but displays all AFL qualities.

Ollie Lord (Sandringham and Geelong grammar) - trained with the Dees over the summer. I saw him in the under 17s futures match. Big 195cm key forward. Tom Hawkins like.  I firmly believe that we should be picking the best available key forward in the draft with our first available pick.

Sam Berry (Gippsland) - like a Lachie Neale clone in how he goes after the footy and wins it. Creative type.  Won’t win 100m sprint or vertical leap, but is a typical footballer who gets the footy and uses it.

Even at 17th, I think we did well from the swap with North.  Kozzie will get better and better, and was an absolute need.  Most of the kids in the draft 2020 will have sat out significant amounts of development and footy, so may need longer to get up to AFL standard.

Cal Twomey has given his top 25.  About 8 are already claimed under the zone, NGA or father son. There’s another 20 that I’d rate highly so maybe there’s a diamond or two for the Dees. I think clubs will face reduced lists so maybe 2-3 picks only for most clubs.

I counted 13, where the clubs will have first dibs, not all are equal of course but there's every chance that pick we gave to North for Pickett etc. could slide from it's current position of 4 to 8 or lower.

Do we still have any that are in our zone - what picks would we need to use to get them?

None of those listed were from our zone, I think we've got a couple who might be close to being picked up later on in the draft though.

I assume Farmer's son is heading to freo also.  Such a shame - would love to have another Farmer running around at the dees

I think he is their development squad (Or whatever it is called), doesn't stop us bidding on him.

Kobe is part of Freos academy as well as being eligible for father son at both Freo and Dees. His family lives in WA, he’s born and raised in WA, he’s a Freo supporter who idolizes Fyfe, and the Wizard works for Freo now in an ambassador role (not sure if Covid killed this role).  If Kobe is good enough to play AFL, he’ll be playing for Freo.

Suns can pre list without using draft picks.  Part of Gil’s AFL SUNS northern preference gift pack.

Curious to see how Gold Coast go.

They've got the academy/rookie aspect which will help but the priority picks were to be reviewed annually.

Adelaide and North are poised to shake up the top end of the draft.  They are 18th and 17th respectively and that is unlikely to change.  So they get pick #1 and #2.

If they let Brad Couch and Ben Brown go as FA's, each will command good $ contracts and clubs will get a 1st round comp pick.  At the moment this would be pick 2 (Adelaide) and 4 (North).

Also, Adelaide have GWS's first round pick and North have ours. Both likely to be around pick 10-12.

It must be tempting to give up on 2020 take a bounty to the draft and with so many high picks they can cherry pick the non-affiliated players.

Between it being a highly compromised draft and no junior football this year, picking kids with AFL futures will be doubly difficult.

About the only definite is talented players will fall to lower rounds than what they would have given an uninterrupted year.

If ever there was a year to find yourself out of the first round, this is it. Who knows, may end up with a bargain

Good point. There’s talented kids not even in Cal Twomeys “top 25”.  It’s compromised and more obscure compared to prior drafts.

Yes I agree that was Gil’s throwaway line. But the Suns are one of his extension team “children” and it’s likely they will be getting handouts until they make finals and then some.

The other point to note is I believe we currently have Hawks 2nd round pick.

This pick could very possibly start in the 22-25 range.

Yes part of the Sam Frost trade. Grabbed Hawks 2020 2nd round. Looks likely to be low to mid 20s.

Our 1st and 2nd rounds in 2020 draft were effectively traded out to secure Pickett and Langdon. Happy days.

For once I reckon we have scored, traded out our 2020 picks for those guys who are looking good for no early slot in a lottery.

We've got to go hard for Peter Wright. Exactly what we need.

With regards to Jackson: I'm really happy with how he looks. It's so comforting to know that life after Gawn is now assured given Jackson develops the way i think he will. He would flourish as a number 1 ruck and is so agile. i think when he stacks on 10kg he will also be much better forward.

Pickett fitted such a need for us. And he makes us a lot quicker. I do think that Spargo may be on the outter

Also, I rate Petty very highly, especially as a forward so I think his development is vital for us.

So just explain to me again why we desperately need Wright when we've got TMac, Weid, Jackson, Petty and even Bradtke already on the list?  They disbanded the VFL Reserves comp.

Please never ever mention Bradtke. The guy is a vfl reserves quality player.

Tom McDonald has proven to have gone severely backwards since 2018. Has really slowed down.

Jackson is a predominant ruckman.

Weideman is a good prospect.

Petty has debilitating injuries and hasn't proven himself yet (even though I rate him).

So enter Wright. Never hurts to have depth as we've seen with Tom McDonald that things can slow down very quickly.

Brad Crouch should only be worth an end of first round pick. Bog average AFL midfielder

Well, well!  Just saw this:  kangaroos-are-shopping-ben-brown-to-other-clubs

Sounds like North will test the water and if Brown gets a package that lands them a 1st round pick they will let him go.

I believe Barrett is a North supporter so he would have good mail.

Edit:  Thanks to @markcfor info to say Brown is out of contract, not an FA so the quoted post above doesn't apply.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
