Given the amount of confusing information surrounding COVID 19, does anyone know if the tests accurate enough within a 3-4 day time frame?

 You are missing one critical word - close. As in close contact.

In terms of the isolation period it will all depend on which, if any, bombers players are considered close contacts.

From what I've read it seems there us a chance he got it Thursday. There was team contact training  Friday. He (And other players) were tested after that seeking and results on Sat morning had "irregularities'. Retested with rush job. Positive sat arvo.

They apparently have to video all sessions so will be able to see who he  had 'close personal contact' with on Friday.

The key thing is that DHHS define 'close contact" as:

Close contact' means having face-to-face contact for more than 15 minutes  with someone who has a confirmed case of coronavirus (COVID-19) – or alternatively sharing a closed space with them for more than two hours.

In an outdoors training session, even one with contact, they may not meet that criteria. They might in the gym but only if they didn't follow the strict protocols. And any team meeting would be short and everyone 2 metres apart.  

It can be transmiitted by directly sharing mucus or the like. For example so he rubs his snot on his jumper and a player then touches and then touches his own face.

The other thing is they are only allowed one session a week where all players train toghether. The rest of the time they have to train in groups of no more than seven. I'm not sure what their Friday session was.

So the key thing is DHHS determining who and when he got it (my bet is his hist family on Thursday given that is where most transmission is currently occuring). If they can pinpoint it as Thursday they can work out who at Essendon meets the close personal contact criteria.

 Any player, coach etc not deemed to have been a close contact who test clear on Tuesday should be fine.

Anyone who they define as a close contacts will have a mandatory 14 day isolation period. It is likely that number wont be that high. If it is say only seven players maybe they are right to play this week.

One important caveat on all of the above. I would have thought it is very unlikely he caught it at Essendon. If he did and they have a cluster there all bets are off. This is the worst case scenario. It would be likely mean everyone at the club doing isolation for 2 weeks, meaning missing three games in total (they all went into isolation yesterday).

As I understand it, if you have COVID, you are contageous well before you start to show any physical symptoms (that is, during the incubation period), and as it usually takes anywhere between 2 and 14 days to display symptoms, then you would have to imagine that you are contageous from almost day 1. If the Essendon players are tested on Tuesday and cleared, then why can’t we play them on Tuesday night rather than having to worry about a make-up game later in the season?

Playing Essendon Tuesday or Wednesday is still possible going by the dodgy rules set out.

If Wednesday then our game with Geelong would be probably next Monday night. 5 day break but possible which would leave our season on track. But it leaves Essendon moving the Blues match as well. 

Going by Jake Nialls BS story in todays Age he is more concerned about Ess-carl than any mention of our fixture.

We are at full strength and I expect to beat Essendon but M Lloyd is a [censored] and is always looking for a Dons excuse.

I didn't hear this, but it's possible he trained after the test, but before the result was returned.

Because it's logistically impossible to arrange the match on an hour or two's notice.

They'll slot it in later in the year, on a few week's notice.

The health authorities have put in place a two-week quarantine period for a reason. There is an incubation period where there might not yet be evidence of the virus in the system. The protocol now for returning travelers seems to be to test on day two and day nine. They don't just let people loose if they test negative on day two. See what happened in NZ. I can't quite understand why they've come to the conclusion that McKenna tested negative on Wednesday so let's assume he picked it up in the past couple days and work from there. It completely conflicts with the notion of a two-week quarantine period.

Thanks for the moral outrage and also correction on incubation. That said do not tell my why I am annoyed. Gil, I can do everything, would have been wise to appoint a top Health person to take care of all Covid discussion and media. So far we have heard sketchy and contradictory comments. Beyond that you miss the point entirely. I could not care less about AFL rules at this stage. I care about Community rules and restrictions, which is quite rightly the Health Dept job. As for my inconvenience I have heard no apology from Gil to the MFC, just that he feels sorry for the player and EFC.  Maybe factor that it and importantly the inconvenience and more to the MFC.

There is zero chance we play the game mid week this week. Barret, the AFL chief journo, who you think would have the inside word said the plan is for it to be made up later in the year once the next segment of fixtures are released. This is also assuming there are no further postive cases coming from the bombers. So yes the concern now falls to the bombers next two rounds as they will likely be in isolation.

If the AFL and EFC somehow swindle a way to avoid isolation and there are no further cases then my guess is ESS v MELB will be the opening round for the next period of rounds on a Tuesday or a Wednesday with our next game being the following Monday or sunday. 

However I don't think this will happen, players and staff in close contact with Connor will be in isolation, the bombers will miss three games and [censored] knows what the plan is to fixture 3 games for them then.

My bet is another player or official will  test positive, the AFL will keep it underwraps until Saturday Arvo allowing Thursday-saturday games to proceed as normal bar the Essendon game. Gil to call a presser saying the season will be suspended for 2 weeks at the conclusion of the round (Sunday games to be completed) this will allow the hub teams to go home serve their quarantine period and they will slap together some new fixture for rounds 5-9.

Agree, in the absence of a vaccine outbreaks and clusters could occur for years. Usually a pandemic sweeps through and is over in a year or 2 after a lot of damage until we get herd immunity. Could be we just have to get used to living with the virus. So we either throw caution to the wind and get busy burying people or get used to living with restrictions and crap like this and go broke as economies go off the boil. Choices aren't flash.
