Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I know Goodwin is in the gun but why don’t we look at getting Dale Morris as our backs coach.

From memory I think Chaplin is our current backs coach but think Morris would be a real asset considering how he played for the dogs.

Smith's played 11 AFL games before Saturday, missed the entire 2019 season and has just come off an 8 week break due to a pandemic. Maybe cut him a bit of a break for one really poor decision. He did chop in front of his man and intercept (with a Jetta assist) the crucial game deciding inside 50.

Maybe Smith won't be smart enough, that's pretty much the decision they made with Frosty, but his basketball background does give him an understanding of zone/man defending and it's up to May and Jetta and the coaches to get him right.

At this stage I'm more concerned about the gigantic holes through our midfield and forward line zone, especially when Marvel stadium should be easier to block up than the MCG. Essendon have started games very strongly getting on their bikes and running in a Richmond wave like fashion

I'm not interested in riding him for it, but it wasn't once, it was three times and all of them resulted in Carlton scores.

Games played or not, Rivers worked it out in his first game. Joel's been on the list for 5 years now and really it's a pretty basic rule I would have thought. Understand who's around you, if it's your turn to go, then so be it. What worries me is it's either player, coaching or both. It's certainly been a problem at Melbourne for as long as I can remember.

Joel's best game for the club has been forward. If he's got a crack at it, I reckon that might be his go. Pressure forward with a bit of x factor.

But my goodness there are so many holes. Apart from Max there are times when you know we probably won't take a contested mark for the rest of the game.

One of our main problems I believe layzie, especially when momentum is with the opposition. Seen teams do it against us time after time when we dominate possession but struggle to do it ourselves.

After two rounds we are in the bottom 2 for contested marking. Lever, May, T Mac and Max 1 contested mark between them so far.

We took 6 against Carlton.

Trac -2....Hunt -1.....Salem -1.....Fritta-1 ....ANB -1.

A lack of contested marking has been a feature of this mob for a long time. Never addressed in my opinion.

There was a brief period where we were reasonably strong aerially with Maxy, Pedo, Hogan and McDonald all in full flight. Didn't last long though.

I think i saw two+ in our forward line that were contested, were marks, and were not paid.....but that's just MFCSS, isn't it?

We were second in contested marking in 2018, so unless 18 months is a 'long time' for you, then you're wrong.

I think he's meaning traditionally.   We are normally a team that relies on running the ball,  rather than kicking to contest and long kick again.  And that's right, we do really,  more over the decades;   run carry handball to loose player.

The Richmonds, Essendons,  have been the kick long and high mark sides.   And look what they've done with that dna over the past 50 years.

Bring in the flood, and all of a sudden the old run and carry in space is dead.

Kill the flood and we will be back in business.

Interesting here - where both Lever and Smith should have stayed down. They left their men (Smith/Betts, Lever/Lang) to jump for a mark that May had covered ... with predictable results. McKay was the only Carlton player who flew, Lang and Betts stayed down to walk in an easy goal. (Jetta was upfield on Gibbons.)

Going to be a long season, ironing out these kinds of mistakes and developing the kind of understanding that's needed to avoid them takes time.

The setup before this as the ball came in was fine. It's just that Smith and Lever made the wrong decision. Though moreso Smith, you feel that Lever coming in across May/McKay would have easily cleared the ball, it's something he's good at. But with Smith crashing in from the left, Lever didn't get to the ball, which under Smith's momentum spilled right.

@bing181 - couple of good shots there.  Thanks for getting them up here for a look.

While it's disappointing to see three go up while two wait down in the wings, especially as they all went the spoil which would mean the ball hits the deck, this is something that they CAN get better at.  If we were showing shots of them caught behind their man, constantly being beating one on one etc then I'd be more worried.

I like the shot of Nev at the bottom of the second one as he keeps an eye on Gibbons.  That's some experience there.

These are the exact and only stats I looked up this week.

It was an issue in 2017 and I believe we lost close games due to it (and thus missed the finals).

Then in the off-season they got Hogan and Gawn ultra slim and fit.

In early 2018 suddenly we were top two for contested marks from memory.

It's not the pack-marks. It's the outlet and release valves at half-back and on the wings which are needed.

Edit: apologies to @Wiseblood who had already noted we were second for CM in 2018.

Inclined to say Smith botched this, as he did multiple other contests. His defensive work on the weekend was absolutely abysmal, directly costing us 3 goals from 8. Barely touched the ball either, registering his first disposal in the 3rd quarter. He wasn't alone as a poor performer on the weekend, but his errors were the most glaring and showed a lack of football IQ. He really is an athlete, not a footballer. He should be played forward or not at all.

At this stage it seems theres more to gain moving him fwd.

It shouldn't be Smith's role to be going up as the third man there, Lever is the intercept defender, if May is bollocking his player properly to keep him out of the contest (legally of course) then it should set Lever up for an easy mark. Smith is then at ground level in case the ball goes to ground to mop up. Those shots I hope were very highly looked at by the backline because it's just laughable seeing our three KP defenders spoiling each other.

I think I'd prefer Smith to go up to spoil,  out of Smith and Lever.

I'd prefer Lever to gather the spoils,  and have the ball in his hands and his mind,  to choose and deliver it.  Dare I say it,  but Smith would be stronger than Lever.  And with Levers knee, I prefer him jump less.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
