Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

They did the song again once Max (along with Tomlinson, Hunt & Langdon) came in and they realised their mistake.

Complete non-issue, however I acknowledge people here need their fix of outrage after missing out for 13 weeks so have at it.

Is it a non-issue? I'm not sure.

We played awfully for 2.5 quarters. We held on despite momentum being against us for over an hour. Yet our players walk into the rooms so keen to sing the song, they don't even look around to see if everyone's there! They just can't help themselves.

I accept it was our first win in nearly 12 months, but IMO there is something wrong with some of our players failing to realise their captain (newly appointed, never won in the role before), as well as Tomlinson and Langdon (new to the club, never won with us before), were there.

I actually think it's an issue of some importance.

The more I think about Goodwin's comments, the more frustrated I get.

There are two quintessential current-MFC ways to lose:

  1. dominate inside 50s but fail to score, conceding easy goals out the back because our entire 22 are in our forward half locking it in;
  2. being beaten in the middle and failing to turn the tide.

The "mid-forward" connection thing is what goes wrong in the first such problem, but not the second.

When we dominate inside 50s and score, we get 2018 MFC, which is what we got today in the first 1.5 quarters: a 42 point lead in that amount of time is nothing to be sneezed at against any opponent.

Goodwin continues to try to get us playing a game that relies on ruck/clearance/CP dominance and locks the ball inside the forward half. If we don't dominate in those areas, we seem to be incapable of winning.

Hi everyone, first time poster here. Very happy to get a win, but a bit disappointed with the capitulation. I reckon it will take a few rounds for the crazy scenarios of the past 3 months to settle things down. I am a bit gobsmacked that this is a fan forum and the level of virtriol from 'fans' at our team. From reading a couple of threads it would seem that many posters forget our team is up against another team trying to win, and that our guys deliberately go out of the way to cause them angst. There is more to life than pissanting on dees players after a win, surely.

No no no Andrew ! This will not do at all !

Far too decent and logical.

You lambast "vitriol" yet it is the very essence of Demonland - the staff of life so to speak.  You must learn to direct it at the AFL, the Media, the coach and the players ( anyone really). However, and most importantly, always remember it is best aimed at other posters.

PS . A bit of smut and adolescent obscenity is always welcome also.

PPS. A word of warning. There are quite a few wackos and perverts on this site so be wary of them.

Thanks heaps for the soccer lesson. Enlightening and educational. In the meantime time I'm looking forward to Melbourne beating our next opponent. Do you know who that is? Do you know where that is? I'll tell you: 3:35 pm. Saturday 21 June, MCG....I do hope it is by a solitary point again and I again get to enjoy reading your vitriol.

Vitriol? Maybe look up this word in the dictionary because clearly you have no idea what it means.

Mine was a discussion of some areas where we did well and things we were poor at and, given the performance wasn't a great one, there were probably a few more things to discuss on what we did poorly. It was not in any way shape or form vitriolic and compared to what we see on Demonland it was fairly tame!

Thanks also for letting me know the next game. I've only been going to the footy since I was 3 and in those 34 years since have hardly missed a game in Victoria (and then only if I was away overseas). I was there till the end at Kardinia Park when we lost by 186 and the same at the G when the Dons beat us by 146. I went down to Geelong by myself in one of our worst years ever in 2013 and stood in the rain all game to watch us kick 4 goals and lose by 11 goals. And I was there as a 5-year-old at the prelim in 87.

So yeah I know where the next game is. Unlike you I know it's on SUNDAY not Saturday. I also know where we played in Round 3 20 years ago because when you care about something so much you tend to remember it.

I hope we beat Essendon too. And I also hope your contribution on the post-game thread is a step up from your embarrassing effort above.

With all the protocols in place, or didn't you notice the changeroom set up, the players were probably unsure whether they could do the song. Notice also it was not the normal rendition

I hope you're right.

I fear you're not as if they did run out of gas it speaks of a group of players that are not as motivated and driven as i had hoped and expected they would be.

I watched the the last quarter of the Gold Coast game. They Suns did not look like they were running out of gas.

I guess Binman it's

A) they had a mental lapse after 1.5 and its mental discipline

B) they didn't stay fit during lockdown and it's mental discipline.

Maybe a bit of both?

How do we fix it faulty? Say we get rid of Goodwin, who replaces him? We'd want to make sure it's a home run and not another Neeld. Ross Lyon could be an option but do we risk a Malthouse at Carlton situation?

Yze. Has been studying under Clarkson for eight years now. It's time to bring him home.

About as flat as a win gets. Not a fan of Goodwin but the players continually drop their intensity and seem incapable of wresting back control of the game once it’s not on their terms. In the long term Goodwin will cop it in the neck for that. However, I doubt he’s instructing the players to not put any defensive pressure on for large patches of games.

Negativity aside, Clarry and Petracca were excellent. Rivers was highly impressive. Jackson showed some encouraging signs as the game wore on. Bennell got through unscathed. Finally, despite its ugly nature - a win is vital for any hope of getting a foothold in the season - still happy to take it rather than the L.

Unpopular opinion. In round 1, Weitering kept Tom Lynch to no goals, no marks and 9 touches in a Richmond win.

Maybe the narrative should be a little more about how good Weitering’s start to the season is, rather than how poor TMac was.

Spot on. Really rate Weitering. I was hoping we could coax him out of Carlton when he had injury issues and was being played all over the park. Young fella was a Demon fan too. Will be one of the premier defenders in the comp for the next 8 - 10 years. Great hands, reads the ball in flight beautifully, smart use of his body & has a bloody big tank as well.

I also think we need Weid in the team with TMac. One of them must start deep forward & lead from the square, not from 40 out. They can share that role between them in games, in quarters. Additionally Fritsch is not a KPF's backside & if we persist with that approach we'll ruin another promising career. He should be playing a role like Gunston when Gunston was at his peak. Jack, not Norman

Leaving Gawn out of the team song and his first win as captain is pathetic and should not have happened.

Very bad look and would only happen at Melbourne.

It wasn't just Gawn. There were several players including Langdon and Tomlinson who should have been in the middle.

“We couldn’t connect forward of centre”.  Goodwin has talked about this for all of 2019, after round 1 and now round 2.  Surely he is the coach. It lets us down after we dominate, we find it hard to score.
1.2 in a half of footy was a disgrace today in good conditions.

Our heart for the contest and our brain to make smart decisions was the issue.

Gawn beat Pittonet in the first half, even in second half. Gawn either lost fitness or softened up.

Even in the first quarter we were well on top obviously but should've been more than 5 goals ahead. Even with the shortened quarters we really shouldve had another 2 or 3 goals.

It was a win, not a particularly pleasing one, but a win nevertheless

The most important thing out of this game is that we won. It could be incredibly important come September/October.

There are however a number of things which mystify me:

1. Why are Jones and TMac so seriously out of form? We cannot afford that to happen again, particularly against better opposition. I would drop both of them and bring in Weid and Kossie.
2. Why do we take the accelerator off after the first quarter? This is in stark contrast to 2018 when we buried most sides in the competition. I hate to say it, but l think we seriously miss that competitive beast Jessie Hogan. We also have several of our young midfield stars Brayshaw and Oliver below their best, which has considerably lessened our ability to put away sides. Are they getting too comfortable?
3. When are we going to capitalise on Max’s superiority? See 2 above.

We still have the ingredients of a top four side, but we will need to start showing it rapidly so that this short season does not rapidly become yet another wasted year.

it is a worry...

Classic Melbourne game: brilliant 1.5 quarters, horrendous 2.5 quarters. Good and bad aspects have been covered in the past 14 pages. a point though is the sheer contrast in our performance, as in we weren't mediocre all day and snuck home, we were devastating in the first quarter and looking at belting them, then meek and fumbly and looking like spooners...

What I find interesting is where we go from here, in 2018 we grew patches of good form in our games into full games of good form late in the year and it carried us into the preliminary. However, in 2019 our patches of bad form dominated and could never be turned...

Our good form or game plan is good enough, and the key to growing these patches is minimal injuries, preparation and continued development.

Gonna be an interesting season, and I've faith we can build this year, and that when we are on, we are truely hard to beat.

I just watched the first half again, and would like to add to my post above.

The pleasing part of yesterday, is we for a time achieved our elite form of 2018. I do not recall us doing this at all last year. It shows we can do it, and it is pleasing much of it was exhibited by new recruits. This is a much better position than the one we had in 2019.

The challenge is getting our mid range players to step up which should in theory be easier than finding new talent. At its best,  there is nothing wrong with our game plan. Essendon is probably a mid list side so should be a bigger challenge than the Blues so if we can overcome them it will set us on our way.

All to play for...

I have a different point of view:

I like, indeed love, beating Carlton by a point...

How's that for deep seated culture?

Do you love beating Carlton by 1 point after giving up a 7 goal lead?

I'm disgusted, not delighted. We have massive problems in club culture.

That nervous look that Goodwin was showing on the bench late in the game is uninspiring. Theirs absolutely no confidence, he looks like he’s just coaching to save his job.

If you didn’t know better, you could be excused for thinking that the two teams had exchanged coaches at halftime. ?

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
