Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

the only players i'd list as absolutely keepers would be:

  • may
  • petracca
  • jackson
  • lever
  • gawn
  • oliver
  • langdon
  • rivers
  • pickett

everyone else is expendable or can be replaced with another b-grade equivalent, and the three youngsters are only on this list cos they show some promise going forward

that being said, if freo were to offer fyfe and hogan for jackson, for instance, you'd be a fool to say no

it comes back to the leigh montagna theory - pay yr best players big coin to hang around, cos the majority of the next tier and down are completely interchangeable around the league

Agree with those but as well I’d keep Salem because he’s a decent kick, Weideman because key forwards are hard to come by and I think he has shown enough improvement this year to show he’s worth persisting with. And Viney because he has leadership qualities.

I agree fully with this list.

On top of Hibberd and Viney, these are the only lads in my opinion who are AFL lever footballers at present.

FB:   Lever.       May.    Rivers

HB:  Hibberd.    ???      ????

C.    Langdon.   Viney.  ???

HF:   ???        ???      ????

FF:    Picket.    Jackson.   ???

R:   Gawn.   Oliver.   Trac.

I’m a Weid fan but he still needs to keep improving to continually get a game.

There’s a hell of a lot of holes to be plugged imo.

I’ve lost the emotional attachment to most players as I’ve gotten older so I’m all for trading a star if the right deal came along.

We need to get real busy this year at trade week and look for some quality free agents.

If we bring in a Preuss or Tomlinson like I’ll be filthy.

Go hard for more quality please

There’s a lot on this list who are simply not up to it. I’d be all for wholesale changes to find a few that may surprise us - we have nothing to lose because we are getting very little from 90% of the list.

Of the above, I’d move Melksham, Hannan and VDB down a rung. They are good 1 in every 4-5 weeks. That’s simply not enough.

Even if I don’t necessarily agree with Goody’s methods, the bare minimum to be an AFL player should be to turn up and give 100% every week. He’s got an impossible task with such inconsistent effort.

We need to get a core group of players who have confidence and belief in their ability. Our guys turn to water as soon as any heat comes.

Maybe we need to invest in psychologists and teachers

I would argue that none of Jackson, Pickett or Rivers are “AFL standard” at this moment. That is not to say they will not become so next year. None would get a game with any of the top 4 clubs at the moment. And Hibberd definitely not, even though he is having a better year than past. So that leaves us pretty thin. Which is why I have been saying for the past month or so that a lot of posters over rate our list. As to trading for quality, we don’t have a lot of currency. We don’t have a first round pick this year. And quality free agents want to go to a club where they can see a premiership in the next couple of years. And that definitely isn’t us.

Brayshaw I rate almost as highly as Petracca. If it is for J.Cameron Id sell either.

How much longer do we persist with this setup / playing group before we make wholesale changes? IMO changing your best 22 by 5-10 would constitute a mini rebuild, 10+ would be a rebuild.

So at what point do we pull the trigger on a mini rebuild? Do we persist with the current mob for another year  and target 2-3 key players for example Finlayson or equivalent for Tmac, Williams for Harmes / Brayshaw or Viney, Papley for a Spargo / Fritsch/ AnB during the trade period?

Do we think that a coach change will translate to immediate success? Because a new coach would bring a new game style / plan , which with this mob might Struggle to implement in one pre season.

My guess is as good as anyone else’s but knowing what we know, I think we will probably do very little given the uncertainty in list sizes etc.

Hannan’s contract is up end of this season IIRC, keep or delist?

One year base deal with game incentives. Otherwise delist. Realistically in a shortened year with shortened games and limited view of a draft which was already highly compromised due to high NGA’s I dont think you can cut harder that 7-8 players that are unknowns. There will be players that get contracts that are not first 18 but that is fine as long as the length and the salary is commensurate with the role.

Without giving too much thought into who else will be delisted, I would say delist him. Just doesn’t do enough often enough for me.

He does some good things when we’re up and about but goes missing far too often. I’m 50/50 at the moment, depending on who else is likely to get cut. Here’s the current list with OOC date, with thanks to @Lucifer's Hero

Based on the view of not delisting harder than 7 (does not mean we dont trade above this) we need to clear those we dont believe can play a role in 2021 and beyond. We also need to consider the amount of contract and length and size they would partake.

I would be delisting in order Jones (retire), Hore, Hunt, J Wagner, Smith, OMac, Hannan,

I would be promoting Lockhart to the list and delisting Brown and C Wagner and possibly Dunkley

Whilst in contract I will not be surprised to see KK retire due to his concussion issues.

Agree with pretty much all of those, perhaps with the exception of Hore, if OMac and Smith are gone then I’d like to retain him.

I'm thinking that other clubs might pick up Hunt, Omac or Hannan.

For whatever reason their careers at the dees seem limited and they could fulfill a need at other clubs so I would like to see their careers continue.

I think i would delist TMac before Brown. At least Brown can move.

They may but I doubt its a worthwhile trade it will be as delisting.

On Hore I would retain on a one year deal just because he hasn’t had a run at it this year.

Yeah, good point.

MFC has been pretty decent at delisting players early so they can be taken as 'Delisted Free Agents' (which cost the receiving club nothing but a list spot).

Thinking about it a bit further, shrinking player lists may deter clubs from taking DFA's.

Would like to see Smith tried as a forward otherwise I think a big clean out is necessary. There is a lot of deadwood on our list.Wish we were like Melbourne Storm, they've been around 20 odd years and have won premierships, played finals and always been in contention. Unfortunately as a club we have accepted "not good enough" for too long and too many of our players play for the paycheck and so they can say that they are AFL players - sad indictment on this administration and all previous ones since 1964.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
