Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

You originally posted that a failure against carlton and Goodwin would be gone.

As I replied he will at least see out his contract.

The current board know that you simply cannot keep changing coaches every few years, all it does is set the team back a number of years.

Good clubs now work the coach and get better personal around him as both Richmond an Collingwood have done.

I can see Goodwin being a long term coach of the MFC.

well if he survives til the end of his contract at the end of 2022 then he'll have been in charge 'officially' for six years, but running the show for seven?

that's the magic number for coaches it would seem - i seem to recall a stat that few after they've been in charge for seven years, with dimma hardwick capturing his first in his seventh season in charge

Other great news was Vanders out on the Park.

Many  doomsayers Have mis read his injury and just assumed it was on top of the 2018 one and written him off and summarily retired him.

Yes it could be another false dawn but it's been good to watch him in many of the matches on TV recall and other Demons matches while  in lockdown. We won most that I have watched also.

Jonesy  will give our half Howard spot a boost at about 2 goals a game of course with Kossie so it's the mids and talls of the forward line that need to simulate with the ball coming down for us to score at a sufficient rate From our chances to win.

Harley and  revitalised kicking star in Trac should assist no doubt also.

With Tommy Melk  and Fritta   plus Weid And Petty  I reckon their is enough ability to gel together,

Let's see  any way It's against the top 4 or5 that we may be less proficient!

Mate, all you’d have to do is talk to Vanders himself and he would say almost as much. You’d say you had seen him around Elwood where he lives & his response was was along the lines of a sombre “oh yeah, you saw me limping around like a cripple?”

He’s a hard marker, but did nothing to inspire confidence in a comeback.

Tell me a losing coach that plays out his contract? None. If we can't beat Carlton we will be bottom 4 so he won't last the year. Richo will take over warming the seat for Yze. It doesn't matter anyway we will beat Carlton and have a good year.

The only thing we can do is Max feeding our Mids and the rest will take care of itself .   Keeping that part short.

Smith is definitely not the person to go one on one with Cripps.  I am not a fan of his and find it amusing how he keeps being mentioned as a possible start up . When in his 11 games has he contributed to the side?  I can  go on.

Please Joel prove me wrong and l would be the first to and happy to apologies to you.  He is no where near in our best 22 at the minute and there would be many others who agree.

I sense the club holds him in high regard.

I agree with you, I wasn't convinced with him as a prospective forward because he doesn't have any runs on the board,   but defending,  I can find some faith for him as a run with, so all he has to do is be focused on his player.

Don't think it would do Clarry any harm to be accountable and could see him rise to the occasion.

He won't run hard enough defensively,  'dw'.    He's lazy,  when they have the ball.

If he's a chance to win it back,  he'll have a go.    But run to help a mate who's battling defensively.  I can't remember him doing that.   Forward of centreline,  he's dangerous to win the ball back.

I'm currently watching the Queens Birthday game from 2018 and Joel Smith was the inclusion for Jake Lever.

Played a really impressive game in defence that day. Definitely has all the attributes to become a really good defender, but as already noted his body let's him down.

I watched the 2017 QB game today and I had forgotten how well OMac played. In particular his marking was a real feature of his game.   It is so absent in his game today where his first option is always to spoil and he doesn't seem to have the same attack on the ball.

I wonder if this has been coached out of him in the desire to play safe football (and the coach to retain employment). This could also have a detrimental effect on confidence and concentration, if it was one of his strengths and a natural thing for him to do. I find myself ruminating over this and hope it is not something that the coaches adopt widely.

Much prefer Smith as a forward.  Thought he was looking really good as a deep forward in that fated practice match in 2019 ...and then 2019.

His foot passes in defense have never looked very convincing or confident to me.  Seems to be too slow to move the ball on and then either picks the wrong option or it isn't a great kick and he turns it over.

Hope he gets a decient run at it wherever he ends up playing, builds some confidence and does finally develop into the player he has been promised to be all this time.

Thanks Lever08.

I understand that Bennell played first half in the reserves and second in the seniors...

From what you saw today, do you think he'll play round two, or still a little off?

I'm in two minds about the best way these match sims should work. Should it be the best 22 versus the rest or should the best 6 forwards play on the best six backs leaving the other end of the ground to be made up with the "next best" 6 forwards versus the "next best" 6 defenders? Perhaps the switching of players was more about trying both options.

PS: This is the best thread on Demonland since the end of March. Through no fault of any of our dedicated posters, there has been a dearth of valuable content from then up until now. Another sign that the (footy) world is returning to some sort of normalcy.

In the recent interview Chaplin explained the thinking behind having Smith as a (deep) back.

I took out of it that until they're sure that his body is right, we won't be seeing him up forward.

I don't 'Rodney'...he had that purple patch in the practice match but when tried previously in the real games he was a lost sheep and kept spoiling teammates, running into their space and was an all-round pest.

I'm not as convinced as others that he's anything more than an athlete who can compete.

As a defender, he's a poor kick and decision maker...in some regards similar to Frost.

I hope I'm wrong as we could do with his athletic traits.

This year is make or break for him.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
