Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

yeah I guess it just come down to how each person sees it. I don't have anything against OMac and I don't want him to fail either. I just feel we could be a little more dynamic for lack of a better word.

i think people can sometimes over rate how dangerous some tall forwards actually are in the modern game, with pressure on the ball carrier going through the roof and with the defensive systems used in the modern game.

not many teams have 3 good tall forwards. last year only about 10 of them managed to average 2 goals or more a game. and on the other end of the scale some of those are more of a second ruckman than a forward and don't really pose that much of a threat in my eyes. should we be paying those guys respect, or should we be trying to exploit them. its a fine line.

i will admit that using Hibberd probably wasn't the best example, but I was trying to show a different way of thinking and how a mismatch of a smaller defender can actually work in your favour, especially in a zone defence, but i'm sure you got that picture.

anyway we'll see how it all unfolds during the season as I reckon the coaches have made their minds up in regards to playing OMac and they'll stick with it for the now. hopefully we win plenty of games, us MFC fans need it!

Interesting you use the word "Dynamic" Is a fit Joel Smith the answer??

Good side on paper. Hope Jetta and Hibberd can find form in the backine. Not their last chance but need to get some confidence back May and Lever must earn their keep. Get Fritta and Weed leading. Mids work hard and kick to in front of the forwards. Max and Viney to lead the way.

Just our luck for Eddie Betts to go "Ballistic"

Hannan is a definite in for me. Would Vanders and/or Bennell be good to go? Have watched the 2018 finals v Geelong and Hawthorn in the last week and Hannan and Vanders are so important to the structure.

in theory i'd say yes. he's 6'3 and is fast and athletic which means he could probably play on a bigger types, plus smaller types as well which would definitely come in handy every week. but in reality he still has to prove he can actually play the game well enough and stay fit.

There are 2 certainties in life.

1. OMAC plays round 2.

2. ANB plays round 2.

O.Mac was good last time while ANB was poor far from a certainty.

The extra interchange will help out Bennell, not how far away Vanders is but it would help him too.

In that case there is one certainty in life.. we cannot win a flag without one or the other missing out!

Assuming no injuries to the following players, I'd go with this line up.

B:  Jetta  May  Lockhart

HB:  Salem  OMac  Lever

?Langdon Oliver Tomlinson

HF:  Melksham  TMac  Petracca

Fwd:  Pickett  Weideman  Fritsch

Mid:  Gawn Brayshaw Viney

Int: Harmes Jones Petty Hannan

LT, I like the team and the explanation  notes. There is talk of the interchange being expended by 1 or 2. If it was expanded by two I would seriously consider giving Bennell a spot if fit. It would be a good way of giving him a run with limited game time.

ANB won't play he's been dropped before and he will be dropped again. There are 26 players in front of him IMO and that's depending on how Bennell and Vanders are tracking. OMac is Goody's pet but even knowing that he deserves his spot with the job he did on Darling.

FOLL: GAWN, OLIVER, VINEY

IC: HARMES, BRAYSHAW, LOCKHART, PETTY

EMERG: BEDFORD, HANNAN, NEAL-BULLEN, SMITH

With Stevens ruling Bennell out that's good enough for me. Petty comes in as the 3rd tall as he could do some damage with T.Mac who has a good record against the Blues. Lockhart breathing down Hibberd's neck if he doesn't perform soon he could be replaced.

CARLTON

B: DOCHERTY, JONES, PLOWMAN

HB: SIMPSON, MARCHBANK, WEITERING

C : MURPHY, CRIPPS, NEWNES

HF: MARTIN, MCKAY, DOW

F: BETTS, MCGOVERN, GIBBONS

FOLL: PITTONET, WALSH, E.CURNOW

IC: NEWMAN, PETREVSKI-SETON, KENNEDY, CASBOULT

I hate saying this but I have to agree with you. It will be very interesting when AVB and Bennell become available.

As a footnote; Mrs W is very keen to get Mitch H back in the side. That would make 3 forwards looking for a spot. Admittedly AVB and Bennell can play through the guts. The more I think about this I'm starting to wonder if O Mac gets left out for anything but match up  reasons. Goodie may have what he and Roos always wanted, lots of midfield beasts. If pretty much everyone is fit we will still need a defense but the game should be played predominately in our 2 thirds

Likely CFC team according to Talking Carlton. Not that tall in the fwd line. De Koenig played 2 games in 2018, that's it. May and Lever have it covered. We were cut up by West Coasts smalls in rd 1 so I doubt we go too big.

Reckon if bench numbers are increased he plays. Still two and a half weeks till the game, he might play anyway.

OK clearly the coach is keen on having small forwards, but I just hope that he realises that in hindsight, he took it a step too far with five small forwards against West Coast and that he can play Jackson as a mobile tall, who has the speed to pressure like Spargo or Bedford anyway and one who can also provide a down the line outlet we so sadly missed in Rd 1. Not to mention he can give Gawny a chop out if needed and means that if we lose a tall through injury, it is not game over.

Clearly with shorter games, the pace will be intensified this season and as a result playing three tall backs as we did against WC and most sides is not a realistic option. Many of you have commented that Lever is better as the peel off intercept man, but I'm afraid as he's got older (and stronger) he is now better suited to play on a big. Hence if you are setting up a defence it is May and Lever as talls backed by a quick intercept tall which is Smith at this stage, but already there are promising signs that Rivers will be ready for that role as well soon. O.Mac should only be in the side when one of May or Lever is out injured.

So with the above logic in mind, here's my 22 with the back-ups waiting in the wings in brackets. I have ruled out Bennell and VDB, but clearly they will come into the equation soon. I just hope they wait maybe until Rd 3 or 4 and don't rush them.

Defenders (7): May, Lever, Smith, Hibberd, Salem, Jetta, Harmes - Emerg: Lockhart (very, very stiff), Rivers and O.Mac

Mids (8): Gawn, Viney, Oliver, Brayshaw, Petracca, Tomlinson, Langdon, Jones - Emerg: Dunkley, Sparrow and Preuss

Fwds (7): Fritsch, T.Mac, Melky, Jackson, Pickett, ANB, Weid - Emerg: Bedford, Hannan, Spargo, Petty, Brown

If Jackson were to play, who would he come in for? A tall forward, a midfielder? A medium forward?

Not bad for a player of Jackson's size to come in and is able to play in a number of positions as mentioned.

I am sure he is in contention. It won't be a shock if he is picked.

Did they? They scored 78 points and we held one of the premier FF to 0 goals, 0 behinds and 2 kicks and 2 handballs. We mainly got scored on rebounds and turnovers (unfortunately reminiscent of 2019).

The forward line (and the lack of cohesion with the midfield) was the big worry for me, as that was a major issue last year and we made the same mistakes.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
