Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

There will only be 3 changes IN: WEID, JONES AND SALEM OUT: SPARGO, BROWN AND ANB. Jetta and Hibberd very lucky.

if there was a game next week then I would of gone with;

out- Spargo, Brown, OMac, ANB,

in- Jones, Weideman, Salem, Jackson

B- Jetta May Hibberd

HB- Harmes Lever Salem

C- Langdon Brayshaw Tomlinson

HF- Petracca TMac Melksham

F- Fritsch Weideman Pickett

R- Gawn Oliver Viney

I- Jones, Jackson, Lockhart, Bedford

EM- Sparrow, Rivers, Hore, ANB

i agree with DeeSpencer, Hibberd needs to stay deep and even play taller if he has too, he has the strength to body spoil a bigger opponent. we cant have him pushing up the ground and kicking inside F50, he sucks at it. if he cant do the job for us anymore then he's of limited value and Hore, Rivers or Smith should probably replace him.

Lever and May have to be the 2 main tall defenders. we pay them both good money, key defender money, so make them bloody earn it. I've seen the 3 tall defence before and I've never been a fan of it. it makes us too slow and we get hurt by the smaller players instead. we have Tomlinson as an option up our sleeve who can go back and help out if needed. we should be utilizing that sort of flexibility instead.

Brown is depth only, and he's not a key forward either. bring back Weideman and play him out of the goal square and let him run and jump at the ball. make it simple for him and just tell him to fly for everything that he can. Let Tmac roam up the ground more from CHF, he cant seem to jump since he did his foot anyway.

Jackson needs to play as a utility. he can back up the ruck if needed and can give us a different look on ball and forward at times, or even throw him out on the wing. the team lacks options atm.

Salem and Jones should also help with the ball use problem a tad as well.

put Oliver and Brayshaw under notice to lift their game and start running hard. i'm not against us pushing either of them out of the centre square, or even dropping them if it teaches them a lesson.

hopefully if this season ever gets going again, we can then have guys like Petty, Rivers, Sparrow, Baker and Hannan pushing others for spots.

and Goodwin needs a forward line specialist coach. i'm afraid the whirlpool aint getting the job done.

An absolutely great post and I agree with all comments

For as long as I can recall I have used an index relating to how many players short we are to being a good side. Typically it has been around six, much more in the lost years years and hovering around four in our finals years. I think we are now back to four to six based on our Eagles game.

So, Spargo delist

Hibberd,  thanks for your contribution.

ANB, gotta get past journeymen.

Jetta, find a full time role at the Club

Brown, a likely error.

Tomlinson, a handyish pick up  but not a wingman

Keep one of the Macs, by having Oscar we fool ourselves into thinking we have the luxury of playing Tom as a permanent forward.

Brayshaw, does not suit the modern game style-look to trade.

SOME HOPE

Look to Jackson, Sparrow, Rivers and others who the track watchers see.

Must find away to get 2-3 more ready made players.

Also it's impossible to describe how much we needed Jack Martin. And we had the pick. But instead of selling him on our culture we let him go to Carlton. He kicked 4.1 and was creative going into F50 against the premiers.

Jack Martin wanted too much money. There is no doubt that we were interested in him. We would've been able to get him and be inside the salary cap.

Brayshaw needs a kick in the behind and I wouldn't be 100% shattered if he's dropped for round 2. They could drop Brayshaw, bring back Salem in defence and release Harmes back to the midfield where he plays his best footy.

Brayshaw just seems to be going at the moment, and has been since round 1 2019, not adding any point of difference to his game (for someone that has no pace) and even missing shots he'd normally get. eg - he kicked 2 behinds in a minute in the third quarter.

Need a serious rocket in him when the league resumes.

We need to find a true old fashioned centre man, who has class, and is tough.

Maybe we leave Harmes at half back for a time,  and try playing Salem in the pivot.?

We need to turn out a Simon Black or Bartel type, or a Lappin.  We don't have any of that class,  as yet apparent.

Journeyman
a worker or sports player who is reliable but not outstanding,.
"a solid journeyman professional"

I've always understood the meaning of that word, as applied to footy, as meaning a player who has been around for many years and played at a few different clubs.

I guess Led Zeppelin were right when they said that sometimes, words have two meanings.!

With all of the time off and the players going away and doing their own individual programs, it'll be interesting to see if there are many changes from our round 1 side. Selection will be based purely on training so this will give an opportunity for many players to have a crack at it. We have a few interesting types such as Hannan, Smith and Petty who have shown that when fully fit they are capable. We also have Harley Bennell coming back from that long term injury who could be a classy inclusion if he stays fit. Question marks still surround the selection of Sam Weideman to step up and take a key forward role and at the other end of the ground, Omac always provides a topic for discussion. Are Jones and Hibberd still automatic selections?

The Round 2 team I would go with:

Jetta May Hore

Salem Lever Hibberd

Langdon Oliver Tomlinson

Melksham Tmac Petracca

Pickett Weideman Fritsch

Gawn Brayshaw Viney

Harmes Bennell Jones Lockhart

That would be an example of a lack of possessions, a compounding lack of defensive pressures and a complete slow-down of our defensive run and distribution, wouldn't it? It may suit Goodwin, but it does not suit me - he's had his chances so why waste a jumper on the field? I must commend you, Chook, on your loyalty - but there are others more keen to succeed, IMO.

If you go by R1 performances O Mac definitely warrants selection. The problem was up the other end of the field. The only way O Mac misses selection depends on the match ups. Looking at Carlton’s injuries on another thread I can’t tell you which other tall forwards they have available apart from Casboult.

i'm not a huge fan but his round 1 form was reasonable and i think it all depends on match ups. He is not bad against the big, not so mobile key forwards. Time will tell.

Mark Stevens confirmed that Bennell won't play round 2 but may come-back in the early rounds.

Spargo, Brown and Bedford can't be considered for selection. The first 2 were woeful while the latter had no impact as a rookie.

Jetta was slaughtered by West Coast's small forwards but will be given an opportunity to make amends.

Salem and Jones are obvious ins while Smith or Petty could be considered as a third key forward, with Weideman taking the #2 role replacing Brown.

i reckon a marking target like Weideman or Petty will come in at the expense of Brown.

one of Hore or Smith could come in for OMac if the Blues don't go too tall forward.

the experienced Jones and Salem come in for youngsters Spargo and Bedford.

If Jackson were to play, who would he come in for? A tall forward, a midfielder? A medium forward?

I don’t agree that Bedford can’t be considered for selection. I hope he is named. He and Kozzy running around our forward line is a sight I would like to see regularly this season.

I didn't think he was too bad. Only the 8 disposals but wasn't overawed by the occasion. Would be more confident second up and at 'home'.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
