Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Sorry 'Sat' but Goody doesn't know more than some on this site.

Spargo has to go.

Hibberd is done and it's time to blood Rivers

How Brown got a game in front of Weid I don't know...

...and we need to run Jackson for what ever games we have this year.

Probably in place of Tommy Mac who has totally lost it.

No good him hanging around when Brown gets a gig.

The big out has to be the game plan, it stinks.

The only thing that will save Goody is the finances.

Spargo

Hibberd

ANB

all out

Tom McDonald back to the goal square and Fritsch to a pocket.

We must play 6 in the forward line. Cannot allow Bailey to be taking two defenders.

Luke Jackson needs to play. Jones back when fit. Salem back when fit. Gawn to be back to his best, as he was clearly underdone.

If Fwarkin Spargo is in the round 2 team, I’ll lose my shyt

Rjay I agree but can you expand on your game plan comment? I am at a loss I think we have a lot of potential in the squad but the way they work together just does not seem to work. The inability to execute basic handball and kicking skills in a game is appalling but, as a fairly frequent training observer, these deficiencies aren’t obvious. At training, game simulations we always move the ball quickly and precisely to a leading forward target. But come game day we are bombing the ball, ignoring leads and shorter options or just coughing up kicks straight to the opposition. We seem to have a lot of ideas at training that crumble under pressure on gameday. And selection is a big issue, Bedford, Kossie, Spargo, ANB all in the same forward line?

3-6 months to get a whole lot of development in to our players and to sort out this mess

FB: Jetta  May   Hibberd
HB: Brayshaw  Lever Tomlinson
C; Baker  Salem  Langdon
HF: Petracca   Petty  Jones
FF: Melksham Fritsch  Pickett
Foll: Gawn  Harmes Viney
Int: Jackson Lockhart  Bedford/Chandler Oliver

Out: Brown, T McDonald, Oscar, Spargo, ANB
In:  Jackson, Petty, Baker, Jones, Salem

We need some actual forwards in the forward line. No more Spargo and ANB because they can run. 1 high half forward and make it someone who will get 20 touches and could actually hurt the opposition in Jones. Melksham and Petracca can't interchange on ball, we need them forward so we have multiple dangerous options and can then get Fritsch up the ground as well instead of stationed at full forward defending 2. Time for Petty, he can't be any worse than Brown and McDonald.

The midfield needs skill and guys who can run both ways. It's been crying out for years (since Jones and Vince left) for someone who can hit some targets and hurt the opposition. Harmes is messy but he can tuck and run the ball through the lines. Salem has the skills we need to get some decent inside 50's. Baker might not have the fitness for full games rotations can cover him and he has the ability to hurt the opposition with penetrating kicks.

We have to start being less reliant on Gawn. Teams know not to kick it up to him these days. Time for him to have less minutes on ball and play forward more in the Cox role of halving contests. Give the crumbers someone to work off. Jackson will be up and down but on his good days the midfield will go to another level having another mobile player and he won't touch it much up forward but he'll at least offer some defensive effort and size that troubles defenders.

The backline is a mess. Oscar played well but apart from a couple of nice mark/kicks in uncontested play he provides absolutely no drive and never intercepts. Whenever the ball is near him you just hope he halves the contest or gets the ball to someone in no worse a position.  Tomlinson is 195cm of meh. He can do that at half back where hitting targets is easier. Brayshaw can't be a successful midfielder in a side with Oliver and Viney, he'd at least show off his smart reading of the play and get a chance to kick it far better than he does at half back. Might add some urgency to his game too. I still think Hibberd can be of value but it has to be in a more limited role deeper towards goal - make him defend a good forward. He can't be coming up the ground trying to lace inside 50's. Jetta left his man too many times to rush up as well, he has to get discipline in to his game because good teams are always going to open you up on big grounds and you have to let things play out as one on one and have the mids cover off.

Really like this side Werridee with the exception of Hore as I don’t rate him at all.  I would also play Weideman at CHB for the whole year and play Tom Mac deep forward.  Love the fact you’ve realised that there is NO future in Jetta & Hibberd.

If they're practicing it 'Earl' then I don't know what to say.

A big part of it has to be confidence then...either that or they have no belief in the coach.

Also, I know we're all being hard...but it was so disappointing to see more of the same, particularly in the current climate where we could all do with a lift.

The players must have felt it. Imagine being so far from home and being told the competition is off, you've got the last game then you can go home. After such a big, big preseason...all for nothing and stuck over the other side of the country.

...but apart from that. Looking at what was in front of us today and the last year and a bit...

They need to sort out the ball use in the middle, if they worked better with blocks and positioning rather than ring around the handball they could get the ball forward much quicker. They f... around with it, it drives me nuts.

You can't have a bunch of defensive forwards who can't do much else...ANB, Spargo, Bedford. One will do and that's more likely to be Jones.

Tommy Mac isn't a number one forward that's one thing, Fritsch is a floater and shouldn't have to carry the load he carried because of a poor selection in Brown who gives us nothing. He didn't want to keep his feet and provide a contest, I get why EFC let him go.

Midfield again reverted to being one way runners...apart from Langdon who tried his guts out. Pity about his disposal, hopefully he can sort this. Part of it's his decision making and lot of it's his teammates letting him down.

Probably rambling a bit now, much on the mind besides this.

Take care 'Earl'...

If we had a game this weekend I'd be looking at dropping Spargo, ANB, Hibberd and Brown and looking at bringing in Jones and Salem if they were fit. No idea who else would come in.

If Goodwin cannot get these players to lower their eyes and deliver the ball at leading forwards without resorting to up and under bombs, then we're going to finish bottom 4 again (if there is a season 2020).

You can have Brayshaw ahead of Hore both are in the team because we have nobody else.

Weideman looks like a natural forward even though he hasn't cemented his spot. I would persist with him. T.Mac is a natural backman they are trying to make him into something he is not just like with Harmes down back he is a midfielder.

Jetta and Hibberd have done nothing for a long while now they are getting a game on reputation.

I've changed the team because they are out for longer than I thought. I'll put the VFL team in too because they should hopefully be running by then.

if there was a game next week then I would of gone with;

out- Spargo, Brown, OMac, ANB,

in- Jones, Weideman, Salem, Jackson

B- Jetta May Hibberd

HB- Harmes Lever Salem

C- Langdon Brayshaw Tomlinson

HF- Petracca TMac Melksham

F- Fritsch Weideman Pickett

R- Gawn Oliver Viney

I- Jones, Jackson, Lockhart, Bedford

EM- Sparrow, Rivers, Hore, ANB

i agree with DeeSpencer, Hibberd needs to stay deep and even play taller if he has too, he has the strength to body spoil a bigger opponent. we cant have him pushing up the ground and kicking inside F50, he sucks at it. if he cant do the job for us anymore then he's of limited value and Hore, Rivers or Smith should probably replace him.

Lever and May have to be the 2 main tall defenders. we pay them both good money, key defender money, so make them bloody earn it. I've seen the 3 tall defence before and I've never been a fan of it. it makes us too slow and we get hurt by the smaller players instead. we have Tomlinson as an option up our sleeve who can go back and help out if needed. we should be utilizing that sort of flexibility instead.

Brown is depth only, and he's not a key forward either. bring back Weideman and play him out of the goal square and let him run and jump at the ball. make it simple for him and just tell him to fly for everything that he can. Let Tmac roam up the ground more from CHF, he cant seem to jump since he did his foot anyway.

Jackson needs to play as a utility. he can back up the ruck if needed and can give us a different look on ball and forward at times, or even throw him out on the wing. the team lacks options atm.

Salem and Jones should also help with the ball use problem a tad as well.

put Oliver and Brayshaw under notice to lift their game and start running hard. i'm not against us pushing either of them out of the centre square, or even dropping them if it teaches them a lesson.

hopefully if this season ever gets going again, we can then have guys like Petty, Rivers, Sparrow, Baker and Hannan pushing others for spots.

and Goodwin needs a forward line specialist coach. i'm afraid the whirlpool aint getting the job done.

Everything needs to be about the kick inside 50. The only players who have the footskills to kick it in there are:

N Jones, Salem, Fritsch, Melk and CP5

They are now the only players allowed to kick the ball inside 50. All other players work the 50m perimeter until they get it in the hands of someone who can hit a target. The chosen kicks then should kick it to spot up leads from our forwards or mids or, if they have to, bomb it to Luke Jackson who brings it down to Kozzie, Bedford or Lockhart and resting mids like Oliver and Bray.

Tomlinson has to go. Langdon is a great ball winner but has to find players laterally and not try to kick to targets inside 50.

Also it's impossible to describe how much we needed Jack Martin. And we had the pick. But instead of selling him on our culture we let him go to Carlton. He kicked 4.1 and was creative going into F50 against the premiers.

I'm going to be a bit contrary and say that I thought there were players who on their performances yesterday were far worse than ANB and OMac. However, whether OMac would stay in the side depends entirely on who we would be playing. If we need a third tall defender, he would stay in. If we don't, he'd go out for someone more suited to the team we're against. That might be Hore if we need some who's medium tall, or it might be a smaller defender.

ANB would stay in the side because he did far more than Spargo and Bedford. It's always hard on TV to see what is happening off the ball, but it was clear to me yesterday that ANB was doing a lot more work than Spargo. Nevertheless, Bedford did enough to warrant another game.

I assumed that Brown played because Weideman wasn't fit. But if, in this hypothetical one week break to Round 2, Weideman is still not right, I would play Jackson instead of Brown for two reasons. We need a better back-up ruckman than Tom McDonald (although it wouldn't have made any difference against Natinui yesterday) and because he's the future and needs to gain experience.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
