Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

There was another Sydney game at the G in 1994 I reckon, when Dermie kicked the sealer on the siren.

Looking at AFL tables it could've been the week after the Footscray game mentioned above? Darcy didn't play but Ilija Grhic kicked 6 goals that day and we lost by 3 points.

There was another game I remember being at as a kid at Windy Hill, we led early then the Bombers cane back - bombers led by a goal when the siren went but Steven Clark (ex-Bomber) had a kick from about 50 out to try and draw. The crowd had already flooded on to the ground and Clarks kick was touched right on the goal line for no score.

I'm sure I'll remember more - this thread is giving me PTSD.

I was at that game Dr. G, the crowd flooded onto the ground and surrounded Clark, he had no hope. Umpires should have given him a clear run but the crowd would have become unmanageable (or more so than they were). Gee Windy Hill was such a nice place?!

Daniher's farewell game in 2007... Up by 17 points with 5 minutes remaining only for Essendon to kick 3 unanswered and Lucas to be lurking at the back of the pack to goal with 5 seconds left. A fairly Melbourne way to send off one of our better coaches of the modern era

That one broke my heart, I was shattered. I also vaguely remember that we had a clear free kick not awarded in the lead up play. I think I might have actually cried a bit that night, Daniher brought us so many great memories and he deserved a win to send him off.

Almost managed to do it here.

Which games have we managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?

Freo game when Farmer kicked the winner?

Round 1 2018 game against Geelong when Maxy missed the goal doesn't really qualify as we were behind when he kicked.

The last quarter effort against the Cats in the return game in 2018 probably just qualifies.

Wasn't there a Freo game recently where Cam McCarthy kicked the winning goal with just a few seconds remaining? Or am I confusing two different games?

Slightly off topic, but this article in The Age last weekend about the 1970 Grand Final and its impact not only on the game but on some of the players involved is a cracking read. It's a good reminder that while snatching defeat from the jaws of victory is painful for supporters, it can be even more devastating for the players. Admittedly, this game was a Grand Final, so of course we should expect the impact would be greater.

I was at that Windy  Hill  game.( at the outer, opposite ,end).

I think Clark’s mark  was about on the 50 m line, so he had to clear 55m at least. He tried a torp, and got hold of it ,but it fell a metre or so short.

Can Demonlanders remind me of games where we’ve won with a kick AFTER the siren. ?   I can think of a few wins JUST before the siren ( eg Gold Coast last  year, Schwartz knock to Leoncelli in Adelaide, TMac v West Coast on the MCG), but no wins after the siren come to mind(unlike several losses AFTER  the siren.)

Forgive me, I need to mention Neale Daniher's final game. Ripper of a game against Essendon but the taste of ash lingered a long time after that one.

Not a close one, but our 111 point capitulation to the Cats for Paul Roos's last game as coach was a pretty disappointing send-off for one of the game's titans.

I have been watching old games on YouTube while on the exercise bike.

So few wins, I'm watching a few losses now.

I  just saw that  2007 Ess game at Docklands,Danners last as coach.

Yes....we were 17 up with 4  min 25 sec to go.

Then the UMPIRES!!!. made three diabolical decisions.   Lucas's first was a result of a very definite throw.

The next came after Bruce was tackled by the legs, in what the commentators described as a "professional free" ("cynical foul" in soccer).....NOT PAID.!!

The other goal came as a result of a dubious holding the ball("?dragged it in") in our forward line, when the umps had otherwise "swallowed the whistle".

Melbourne had fought back brilliantly after being 30 points down early.

I remember walking away from that match feeling absolutely cheated. Otherwise, I had eradicated it from my memory.

Yes, woe is us.

But if you look again at the last Qtr,  see if you can tell when we lift our foot off the accelerator pedal.  IIRC,  that was apparent to me during the game.  We had a habit of doing it a lot around that period of this list.

Don't  "watch"  the game...  bu studiously look for our intensity levels throughout the game,  and mostly the last Qtr.

We were habitually taking foot off the pedal for years,  trying to save our leads...   instead of powering offensive pressure, to maintain the scoreboard pressure.

Its too late to refire after surrendering healthy leads,  due to easing off.

You've been no help. I had successfully eradicated it from my memory, too, until your "helpful" reminder above.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
