Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Can members expect to get a refund?

Can’t believe people think they would get a refund (there is probably no cash even if they were forthcoming) when for GF tickets the clubs and AFL are more than willing to take money with no guarantees.

From what I've read on this particular thread we're really making a distinction between members who might ask for a refund because their personal circumstances have suddenly become desperate as opposed to those that are getting no value for their spend. It's not unreasonable to think that the former are very much aware of the knock on effect this may have on the club and that they wouldn't be making that call unless their own situation wasn't equally as bad. It's also a dilemma that we should all be able to empathise with.

On that basis then surely all of the contention should centre on the members that fall into the latter camp and to discuss whether their views really align with what many of us feel is a financial and emotional investment in something much greater than the sum of it's parts.

I’m the last guy to go into bat for Fat Ed, but he was right. Tony was throwing ‘when are you did you stop beating your wife?’. There was never going to be a right answer.
And yes Ed is Ed and attacks anyone that says Collingwood’s poo doesn’t smell, but that interview was bear baiting in a time when everyone is under enormous stress.
It could have been handled better by both sides but Jones was the protagonist

quite agree rab, and for the latter camp it would better to argue for the benefits with a carrot rather than a big personal stick .

There isn't a right or wrong, Ed is  passionate about the club  he loves as l  am. A paid up member  this club is a  part of my life and is a part of my Family. I won't chase a refund even if l don't get to go to a game this year. I want my club to be viable if l can help in a small way.

That doesn't mean that others shouldn't ask for a refund. That is their option.  Paid up member for 39 years and I can right off this year as well it seems. However l will be back the following year as a paid up Member to the  day l die but that is me and not everyone has the same view. Ed is passionate for his club and I admire that. It is something that some pf our supporters lack and that is being passionate about our club. Unfortunately.

This.  I am a trident member, and give to the demon draw thingo when the club rings me.  Don’t want either if them back.  I want a strong and viable MFC on the other side of this.  I am paying for a membership, not for a seat (although my seat is quite nice thank you...)

The question was a totally unnecessary set up.  If Eddie had answered with a clear "yes", what do you think would have been the outcome which, by the way, would have had a ripple on effect to all other clubs in the competition.  If he had answered"no", the press would have turned it into a story about a club that doesn't care about its supporters and other clubs would then be under pressure to not be the same.

By suggesting that the club is there to help financially stressed members as much as they can, he is saying precisely the right thing.

LOL Just watched the clip and it sounded to me that he crossed over to Eddie at the end of what might have been a very long hard day for him. Given the time again he might have articulated his answer a little differently.

That was a completely bizarre overreaction to soft-ball question... which raises the bigger question, where has Eddie invested all of Collingwood's money..?

I'm no fan of either Jones or Eddie, but Eddie was quite correct in what he said.

What really got my attention was Eddie looking and sounding like he's had 6 coffees too many.

In these dark days, members that ask for a refund of already paid dues are equivalent to fair weather supporters and rats leaving a sinking ship. As I said before the money won’t got far and relief will be fleeting and minuscule. From buying a few rolls of toilet paper to a small fraction of ones monthly  house mortgage then it will all be gone. The clubs futures are at stake and extinction looms on the horizon. Once gone they may never come back.

Perhaps one of the stupidest things I've read on this site.

I paid for 2 memberships. Mine alone is about $700.

For the first time in my adult life I will have no work after Easter, my missus' job the same. No income for my family for about 4 months. My employer has said to expect it to be up to 6 months, and they do not qualify for jobkeeper, according to the % drop in turnover rule.

While there are plenty of others doing it harder than us, that membership money would keep us going for a few weeks.

I will not be asking for a return, however I absolutely understand any member who does due to sudden hardship.

Cheap stereotyping from club 'supporters' is the last thing anyone who is doing it tough needs atm

This was what is known as a "media beat-up".  A Ch 9 employee baiting another Ch9 employee in a news segment to promote Footy Classified to be shown later on that night.

Ed knew exactly what he was doing.

Clearly not if you are a Collingwood member:

That interview had two purposes. 1) Eddie wanted to let people know there would no automatic refunds of everyone's membership fees and 2) tune in to Footy Classified! They would've set it up before hand, classic face/heel promo work.

Everyone  loses something in this pandemic. There is no escape for the economic consequences. In the big picture cost of membership is no big deal. A refund won’t go very far. I’ll still pay mine, games or no games. I see it as an investment for the future return of the game.

I won't be seeking a refund either - at this stage. But if someone has lost their jobs or stood down without pay and pay for memberships for husband, wife and kids I can understand why $1000-$2000 might be seen as more important spent on groceries and bills instead of season tickets for games that won't happen.

Eddie is 100% correct. If all members want a refund because they are not getting access to games, then find a new sport to follow, because the AFL won't be anything like it was when you're done

Sure - and maybe the players can take a bigger whack as well to share some of the burden.

I'm not talking those on minimum wage - those who are earning $300k plus a year should be foregoing everything above that in the interests of ensuring the ongoing financial viability of the competition.

All he had to say is that it was something that needed to be addressed as we learn more about whether a reasonably full season will be possible.

It will need to be addressed however. Donations if they are to be made should be decided by the donor not the recipient.

Club members are one thing but how about companies who paid for entertainment packages, super boxes etc not to mention MCC and AFL members. The list goes on.

Airlines are playing games and pushing travel credits now instead of cash refunds. Kayo is expecting full payment although there is no live sport. Tough times ahead.

Kayo was the first thing that got cancelled

I agree. Also, if you paid your money at the time, you had the money for a membership. By not attending games, you are now potentially also saving money. No expensive food, beers and the cost of travel. I understand people are now in need of money, but for those that are requesting a refund, it’s kind of like buying an item and then realising you want the money for something else and asking for it back. It’s not the club’s fault that they can’t offer you a game. Stick with them. The money was gone long before this hit. If you are on a monthly payment, I can understand if you asked for a 3 month suspension of the deduction, that is reasonable.

People might also find themselves in the dole queue now when 6 months ago they wouldn't have ever foreseen that. To not be understanding that circumstances have changed considerably for everyone, not just the AFL and clubs, is extremely ignorant.

I haven't been impacted (yet) and hopefully I won't be - but I'm not going to guilt trip others who may be experiencing extremely tough times at the moment.

This is a good point. Eddie has a stellar reputation in this area, but if you'd spent 20 years in an Amazonian jungle and came back to civilization 5 years ago, you'd wonder what it's based on. Adam Goodes "King Kong", Caro Wilson "drowning", his most recent wooden stint at hosting the last incarnation of the Footy Show, now this Tony Jones thing where Jones of all people appeared more composed and on point. He just doesn't seem to have the magic in front of a camera or mic any more.

It’s Eddie just being Eddie, should have seen his temper as a Cadet Journo back in the late 80’s!

Jones was asking a fair Question, many people are flat broke right now. Food on the family table

Footy won’t happen this year

Never thought I'd say this in public, but what I will probably miss most about the footy is not having the chance to regularly catch up with demonland's very own royalty: @Bitter but optimistic. His odd dress sense, whole body fungal infestation and severe halitosis give him a certain charming appeal. Not to mention there's always plenty of spare seats around us.

I will open a cheap bottle of shiraz tonight to toast our good health and friendship.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
