Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

five-year-recovery-as-smaller-victorian-afl-clubs-battle-for-survival

"Smaller Victorian AFL clubs Melbourne, St Kilda and North Melbourne face a fight for financial survival ...

"If revenue goes down even 20 per cent, which is probably unders (conservative) if the season is cancelled, even with an above-average growth rate it takes five years to get back ...," Mr Youl said.

"The AFL has been working to put in place a line of credit that would shore up their liquidity, with Marvel Stadium being raised as a potential asset they could use to securitise loans".

"Mr Youl said the AFL would take a minimum of five years to recover financial ground with many... predicting it would taken even longer and the game's economic model would look different forever".

Whatever happens this will cripple us, especially as we will have to pay back the Marvel Stadium 'securitised loans' provided by the 'line of credit'.

While the 'economic model being different forever' means that funding sources will change/shrink, it is hard to see 12 10 AFL teams in Victoria at the end of this.  Would not be surprised if mergers and relocation talks start in a year or two when the dust settles and maybe we end with 10 8 teams in Victoria.

But in such dire financial times, surely the AFL needs to give up the luxury toy, pipe dream of GCS.

Edit: to correct figures

This is going to make the gap between the have’s (WCE, Freo, big Vic clubs) and the have nots like us even bigger and potentially never to be made up. We won’t be able to spend on footy dept like other clubs and it will make things very difficult.

I wouldn't think football is essential, but let's see.

Time to implement the binman plan:

The "rebuild" will also be in the environment of a new TV rights deal which may not deliver as much money as it has in the past. Channel 7 is almost broke as are the other FTA companies and Foxtel are tired of bleeding money.

Beat Fox on this...will take any wins I can at the moment.

...by the way. Where is 'Ethan' the news breaker?

I hope he is ok.

I think you’ve jumped to conclusions on “abuse the membership dept“ out of that but I’d hate to cast aspersions on people who may not be in a financial situation to have a luxury spend like footy membership right now or might need that money back (if possible) to pay rent or bills etc.

Footy membership is hardly a “luxury spend” considering that you probably pay it in expectation of either attending matches (and spending  more money on fares and/or F&B)  or watching either at a pub/club or home on a subscription. This year, (reduced) membership subscriptions are the only revenue stream for most clubs who lose their entire home game gate takings  (ANZAC Eve  & Queens Birthday in Melbourne’s case).   This could tip some clubs to the brink who are already contending with the scenario of half their list getting paid, whilst not getting any game time with the VFL abandoned for 2020.

For a lot of people it is a luxury spend, now and moving forward until this “this returns to normal” even more so.

I wonder if there might still be time to rush through the initial four rounds before these potential new measures kick in? That would give us the foundations of a season at least so that we can shut up shop for four to eight weeks to see how things play out before picking things up again.

I know we all have varying opinions on the subject but personally I'd like to be in a place where there's at least an opportunity for the season to continue later in an environment more recognisable to us all.

Unlike some other codes, Australian Rules football is played for just six months of the calendar year with anticipation filling the long vacuum in between each season. I'm happy to have a little fix now (fingers crossed) to be followed by another mini build up prior to ramping things up again in earnest again later.

As I've said it's just an opinion so don't shoot me down.

I assume you mean it will the end of having 10 teams in Victoria. I initially read it as ending up with 10 teams in Victoria, which would be a geat result.

I meant that we could easily have 10 8 teams instead of 12 10 in Victoria.

I also think it is a great result as long as Demons are one of the 10 8!!

The government is considering the possible ban on interstate travel for sporting teams.

What a delightful thought. For this season a VFL competition of the 10 Victorian teams. 18 rounds playing each other twice one home and one away. How fair is that?  Bring it on!

A Final 4 with finals as they were in the good old days. First V Second  Double chance, Third V Fourth loser out. (Semi Finals) Loser of !V2 plays winner of 3V4 (Preliminary Final) Winner of Preliminary Final plays winner of ! v2 semi Final. GRAND FINAL. 3 Finals rounds giving a total of 21 rounds for the season. NB This explanation of finals system is for the very new and younger Demonlanders. Sorry to bore  all the older posters.

Interstate teams could play each other 5 times in their own state just to give the locals a bit of footy.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
