Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Jack Viney a Liability?

Viney's kicking is a liability.

Did you ever see his fathers,   more often than not it would go to the opposition,   at least it was 40 odd metres into our territory.

But I can remember yelling a number of times "kick it to one of ours "

Problem is, in 2019:

MFC ranked 5th for inside 50s, yet....

Ranked 17th for points scored.

Ranked 17th for opponent rebound 50s.

Ranked 4th for turnovers.

Jeff Garlett lead our marks inside 50.

Rebounding footy has never been more prevalent than it is now, so it's not just about territory anymore, it's about efficiency.

The Roar posted a recent article about the Predictions for Melbourne for 2020. It went on to say that we have a surplus of inside mids and too many of the same type of player, specifically targeting Jack. "Jack Viney must have a question mark on his future in the modern game. He's as one-dimensional a player as there is in the AFL, and there are others on the list that perform his main skill of extraction better. He's been demoted from he captaincy. He's also treacle-slow and can't kick. Concerns." Do you think Viney's lack of break away speed since his foot injuries and poor disposal efficiency are major concerns? He is only suited to an inside midfield role and hasn't performed at a high level for a number of years now (I do understand he's had injuries). Thoughts?

I don't know why people take any notice of the crap in the media. It also some people wouldn't know what a fair dinkum footballer looks like. the only bad year he has had was last year and that was due to injuries.

without the pressure of captaincy, i think Jack can work on being a bull and might also be able to get a better run with injuries if he does not feel compelled to play each week (as he might have when he was one of the co-captains).

i think the captaincy decision will be a blessing in disguise for Jack, at least i hope so anyway.

big fan of him and what he has done so i think he can easily get back to bull like form of 2017 and 2018.

imagine a fit and firing vandemonberg and Vines reaping havoc on opposing teams and sending players to the hospital, thats enough to get me out of bed in the morning.

Go Dees ! :)

His perceived lack of skills are not terminal liabilities. His lack of creativity with the ball  and inability to generate viable offensive movement when he has it are. However it was encouraging to see him share the ball around more  in the practice game against Adelaide.

We're yet to see the best of Jack. Finally injury free, this may well be the year.

With that said, improving his skills overhead and on his right side would add a few strings to his bow...

First full pre season, possibly in the last 5 years at the Demons, so that will be a huge help.

Disposal needs to improve, but when it comes to leadership and capability on field he stands up on the big occasions, finals in 2018, the WC win mentioned earlier in the thread and with broken foot still took Port apart in one quarter in 2017, plus the pressure from his tackling is immense!

I can’t believe how much crap he cops on Demonland, carried significant injuries through last 4-5 years! Judge him in 2020 when he gets to complete a season fully fit!

Go Jack, bleeds red & blue, and polls incredibly well in Melbourne B&F’s even when injured and missing games.

Give him a break Demonlanders!

It gets up my frock when the players we love to watch go through a bad patch and get slagged off here. Tmac Gus and Viney in particular. I wish more posters would hold their bottle and see a couple of real games before looking for problems. Every other team would love these players to be available.

We all saw the impact Viney had in the 2018 finals after missing most of the season. I have full confidence he'll get back to his best this year. He just needs to fix up his disposal and set shots on goal.

Exactly what he's built for. I think we'll see him play with more freedom as VC and I can't wait to see him tear it up in another finals series.

Ridiculous thread. Shut it down. A fit Jack Viney is in the best 22 in ANY side in the league.  He is a tough mid who wins the footy and gets the footy.  He bleeds red and blue. His disposal is ok but certainly not horrid.  His toughness and leadership leaves many others in the dust.

When we played West Coast last year Hurn and McGovern combined for double figures in marks purely from Viney kicks.

But sure, he 'bleeds red and blue' so let's not talk about it.

Adding an edit because there seems to be an echo in here - It wouldn't have been double figures as Viney only had 9 kicks for the game. Hurn and McGovern took 19 intercept marks in that game however.

Any idea if that was the Perth game or the Alice game, just out of interest?

They're horrific numbers.

The Perth one I'm pretty sure.

Edit - Just looked up to make sure, and Hurn and McGovern had a total of 25 marks in that game (including 19 intercepts). Geez. BUT I might have remembered incorrectly about the total of marks from Viney kicks directly.

Given he only had 9 kicks, it is possible you might have

I know you corrected yourself but you were pretty quick to be anti Viney. Shows a real bias or you just needed to invent something to support your opinion.

No I love Viney. Hate his kicking inside 50, but love him otherwise.

Interesting you talk about bias and inventing things...

Which is why I added that I remembered incorrectly. Didn't think it was that hard to understand.

Can you edit your original post to say how you just completely made that up please.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
