Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Not really...we're in effect coming from 4th.

...and with a much better list.

No way mate. Do not cushion it.
We are coming from 17th and the Coach is on the line

That is the mindset we must have. Win from adversity. Close is not good enough, however heroic efforts may be.

This 8-win threshold that people are proposing for Simon Goodwin is extremely generous.

It's our board that was extremely generous in giving him a 3 year extension despite no evidence that we would have a back to back finals campaign.

Therefore, Goodwin is as safe as houses if he has a mediocre 8 win season, IMO due to his multiple year contract.

Another 4 or 5 win season might change the landscape.

You've got me all wrong.

It's the supporters who think just making the 8 is good enough or putting in a good effort should be the pass.

They're way off the mark.

I'm judging the team and Goodwin on where they should be at this stage of the game.

...and that is top 4 and no less.

If we don't get there then serious questions should be asked as we've now had long enough since Roos and PJ came on board to turn the ship around.

Forget the win from adversity stuff, at this stage we should be up there as contenders with the Tiges, GWS and the like.

I will be disappointed if we make the 8 win a couple of finals and drop out like we did in 2018.

We've got to be better or it's a fail from me.

Good, i was worried you were dismissing 2019.
It did exist and is part of our history.
We have to aim to BE the Best, and nothing less, but I sometimes think that both the Club and some supporters think that is an unattainable dream.
it should be our yearly aim.

I just hope the manic untargetted i50’s stop. If we improve our game plan and skills alone, we’re likely to become more consistent. I can’t put a number on it yet, but I’d love to see finals again

That's the gameplan.

The trick of course is to keep it in the forward 50 and restrict the rebound.

It also has the flaw that our 50 metre arc is crowded making scoring that much harder.

Time will tell.

Success - win premiership

Pass - finals

Fail - anything else

Like others I think Goodwin is safe as houses as a result of the ridiculous And unnecessary extension given to him prior to 2019 season

He has at least until part way through 2021 as a result; if we win a premiership this season he has more time up his sleeve!

Personally I see us as a bottom five side; our list just ain’t that good

Improve our inside 50 to goals ratio (to at least the League average) and results and finals will look after themselves. In the year from hell we were still 5th for inside 50 entries. We score goals from those entries and we reverse the rebound goal ratio as well.

There are certainly a lot more optimistic people than me around here. While I think if we have some luck and a good run with injuries we could finish as high as 5th or 6th. I just think we have two many question marks on to many players and will finish outside the finals.

But in saying that the club clearly rate  where are list is at, so I will be judging the season on the clubs expectations. So winning a final is a pass for me. I also think both Goodwin and Mahoney will be gone if we only win 8 games for the season.

Finals is pass mark for me. Finishing say 9th won't kill be a disaster but we have to show signs we will be back in there the following year.

Bottom 5 as in 13-18?

Surely you jest.

If not why is not making the finals a fail?

Cos any time you don’t make finals is a fail

We can only go on recent history, and that has us, what, a narrow 1 point win game off wooden spoon placing?

After five years of linear growth our slide last year exposed how many gaps we still have in our line-up and how atrocious our skill level remains

If you look at our best 22, when everyone is fit (which is an issue on it's own), I don't think we have that many gaps in our side.  Our back six could be as good as any on the park, our midfield has improved with the addition of more outside run (a gap we have filled) and our forward line has the capacity to be dangerous, although we're relying on improvement from the likes of Weideman and someone like Pickett popping up as our first choice small forward.

I'm interested to see how our skill level goes once the real stuff start as you can't put too much on training, but I don't think we really have that many gaps in our list.

If halfway through the season we are looking back on an utter disaster, Goodwin is gone. Contracts aren’t what they used to be (though it will be expensive).

I don't think 2019 means anything. If Burgess is doing his job properly the list should be looking to replicate 2018.

I lost count - actually I could go back and count but I can't be stuffed so I'll just say I lost count - of the number of games last year where we were either in front or right in the contest at the start of the final term and were overrun. Fix that ability to run out games and we should be looking to grow beyond 2018 results.

A pass for me is finals. Success would be winning at least one final and being competitive in a second. Winning a premiership would be delirium.

When were we last in a situation where at 3/4 time we are 30 points down, but come storming home in the last to win by 10+ points.
Goodwin needs to add flare to his game, following the process is not always the way to go.

Look I know you want the best for the club, but the benchmarks have to be realistic.

When was the last time that happened full-stop?

FTR, over the last 3 years Richmond has one last quarter where they outscored the opposition by 40 points and so did Melbourne and both were in thrashings not come from behind wins.

I don't get the concept of a pass mark for Footy. So it not successful but it's not failure?  you dont play or watch sport to just 'pass' or to not fail. you play to succeed.

Getting this generation of players back on track and winning is required. 14 wins or more would be a good year and get us back on track for a tilt over the next 3-4 years

Nah mate, we need to set the bar really high!

When was the last time we were down by 100+ points but came storming back to win in the last five minutes?

Goodwin needs to add some miracles to his game plan.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
