Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

2020 Leadership Group

With the Captaincy likely to be announced in the coming days/week who do you think will form the 2020 Leadership Group?

2019 Leadership group
Nathan Jones (co-captain)
Jack Viney (co-captain)
Max Gawn
Neville Jetta

With Nathan Jones vacating the captaincy does he still retain a spot in the Leadership Group?

Who else deserves a call up? Tom McDonald? Jake Lever? Steven May?

Semi-related in terms of numbers. Recent years have seen the Dees cut down the numbers of people in the Leadership Group. A number of years ago I recall having a large group.

Do you prefer a smaller group?

Brisbane have named a 9 man leadership group this year meaning that half the players on the field are officially "leaders".

Viney & Gawn as co-captains

Then Jetta, Lever, TMac and possibly Melksham.

I think TMac into the leadership group is a no brainer. Well spoken and key player in the forward line.

Hard to see Jetta not being in the group.

We keep hearing and, if you head down to training see, how good a leader Lever is. Playing Devil's Advocate he does have a susceptibility to injury. He's had 2 ACLs. We need leaders on the field. Perhaps that is me being a little harsh. On paper I like Lever as a leader.

Never really thought of Melksham in that way.

Maybe it’s because of the ever growing admiration for this bloke, but I would like to see Harmes in the LG.

Preference would be -

Viney (C)

Gawn (VC)

Jetta, T Mac, Harmes/Lever

I'd have it the other way around

Gawn (C)

Viney (VC)

Tmac/Harmes (DVC)

I'm not so passionate about T-mac being in there.

I think Gawn/Viney are co-captains, despite what I'd prefer.

Gawn/Viney (C)

Lever, May, Jetta as the remainder of leadership group.

Waiting in the wings would be Harmes

A dearth of on-field leadership last year would incline me to think they'll increase the group this year.

I don't think Viney will be demoted either.

Gawn / Viney C-C

Jetta, TMac, Lever & Harmes

I think 'Nut' is a genuine chance and Jones will be a leader officially or unofficially.

May could be leadership material but he's got to get some runs on the board first.

My thoughts on TMac are based purely on his ability to talk in front of the media. As someone else mentioned in the Co-Captains Model thread you need a mix of PR person and leader on the field which is why Max and Jack make a good pairing if you have to go down the Co route.

As for TMac's on field leadership role I cannot speak to. For some reason I do think it's important to have leaders across all lines. TMac for mine seems like the best option up forward.

My guess is very much impacted by injury history. I feel like only 1 out of May and Lever will be put in the group, and given his age and ability to continue in the role for a long time I think Lever may get it. Similar with TMac and Melksham, I think we 100% need an official leader at the forward end, TMac seems the obvious choice but I wonder if another forward may be named as well to cover for that injury risk.

Or maybe I'm reading too much into that.

My mates theory from the team photo is that the captain always sits on the right of the coach. Gawn has pole position with Viney either co captain or vice captain. Nev in the group with TMac & Lever and it would be no surprise to see Jones in their too.

Good observation. I hadn't thought about the team photo being taken before the leaders have been announced.

Players get demoted all the time from the leadership group, so I don't think it's overly shocking. My opinion is that Viney shouldn't be captain as he needs to focus on his form first and foremost. Also, the co-captain model is no longer in vogue, which is also evident with the most recent premiership winners.

Gawn as (C)

Viney as (VC)

if we're going to have a leadership group, I'm not sure the best model would have three defenders (four if Harmes plays in defence and is chosen to join the group) and no-one forward of centre. That being said, I'm a strong believer in (1) having a single captain, vice-captain and deputy vice captain and that's it and (2) choosing captains for their off-field capabilties as much or even more than their on-field leadership.

I'm not convinced we should make Gawn captain on the basis that his knees may not be able to handle the weight of captaincy.  Is this talk of Gawn as Captain and his knee injury a coincidence, maybe not? Regardless we cannot afford to take the risk that the two are connected.

With Jones stepping down, I can't see the club also taking Viney out of the captaincy role.  I don't think it would be a good look for the club, and I'd be happy with Gawn and Viney as co-captains.  They might ask Viney to step back in the coming years, but it makes sense to have them both for 2020.

Take your pick out of the usual suspects to make up the rest of the leadership group.

Given the considerable criticism about our lack of on-field leadership in 2019, I'm attracted to the concept of having a nominated leader in each part of the ground.  I'm comfortable with Gawn and Viney sharing the captaincy, and I think Lever would be an outstanding marshal in our back half, and imo, it would be almost impossible to omit Nev.  The forward half is more tricky.  T.Mac is the obvious choice, but IIRC he has had a couple of stints in the leadership group but hasn't lasted long in that role.  I have no idea if there is an underlying reason for this, but if not, I would go for him.  tbh, none of the other regular forwards inspires me greatly as a potential leader.

ps. wwsw's post above is the first I've heard of Viney 'campaigning' for votes.  If it's true, I don't like it.  Unity is imperative!

If taking anything from the official team photo shoot it looks likely Viney and Gawn as Co Captains being either side of Goody. I would then go for Lever (great communicator at Maroochy), Jetta and Tom Mac.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
