Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Male players may give up cash to fund AFLW pay rises

Lol.

AFL Accountant:  Hmm, our total revenue is not growing as much as our wild expectations and we might not be able to fund everything to the full extent that is anticipated by our stakeholders.

AFL Execs:  I'm pretty sure that is a problem to do with funding the women's league.

AFL Accountant:  Well, actually, the entire women's league is less expensive than...

AFL Execs:  Now now, don't get excitable.

AFL Accountant: ...Karmichael Hunt...

AFL Execs:  Shush now, bigger picture, you know?

AFL Accountant:  ...Shanghai...

AFL Execs:  No, no, we have this covered.

AFL MEDIA:  "Excessive costs of women's game to be covered by cuts to male player's salaries."

Personally, I'm just surprised they AFL HQ didn't also blame the lack of funding for grassroots football on the AFLW.

You have to wonder if the game is finally reaching it's zenith commercially. With little prospect of the competition expanding into new markets domestically, two current markets (GWS & GC) being heavily subsidised and seemingly little appeal overseas to viewers and advertisers (relative to other major codes) it's hard to see where they can go next. The NZ and China experiments tend to attract two guys and a dog which isn't totally surprising when they send some of our poorest performing clubs to showcase the game. Is sending GC to Darwin to play another cellar dweller every year really a good advertisement for our code? AFLW is surely just a teeny part of the overall financial picture at the moment.

How utterly embarrassing.

Imagine being asked to give up your deserved salary increase to fund a subpar, below-average womens league.

and imagine being a woman in 2020 and having men pay you like that.

The women do deserve equal pay....................when the level of quality is comparable to the men's. They have a long way to go.

The talent has been spread way too thin (like butter scraped over too much bread) and the game grown too fast to allow for it to develop naturally.

Good ol Gil and SHocking's legacy will be of destroying our game. Cannot wait to see the back of them.

What a joke

An 8 game season...

The Women’s League should have been VFL Standard for at least 10 years to let it grow. But the AFL want a ready made elite competition

What a nonsensical comment.

You realize there's been women's leagues for a long time right? (Daisy has 10 flags after all)

What exactly would make AFLW be VFL standard? You'd be happier if it was called VFLW?

Also, you guys should all try reading the article instead of just the headline.

A deliberately misleading headline designed to drive clicks, create faux outrage and trigger men babies.

As you suggest people making comment who obviously haven't read the article (spolier alert the AFLPA have raise the vague idea of a joint CBA, the AFL nothing to do with it, the next tv rights likely to be less so less revenue to share with players).

We are collectively getting dumber.

The AFLW is way off being elite right now, whichever way you look at it.
it ain’t ready

It literally is the elite level of women's footy.

Doesn't matter if you think "it ain't ready" (what does that even mean anyway?), it's here, so deal with it.

Can't wait for the inevitable cries for "equal pay" from the girls. You know it is just around the corner.

Not sure how long the crowds will keep turning up when sides are scoring 1 goal for an entire game. The attitude and application from the girls is fantastic, but the skills have a long long way to go.

Will be very interesting to see what the proposed increase for the girls will be. I'm betting it will be out of kilter with the money that AFLW brings into the game, but there are the intangibles such as new people brought into the game that are very hard to put a number on.

I am a fan of the Dees womens side, but would not bat an eyelid is AFLW fell flat on its face either. It is probably here to stay, so I guess everyone needs to accepts that.

Meh.

Charge admission, the AFL will be losing a bucket on AFLW, it's not cheap to host a game with venue hire, staff, umpires and everything else you need to pay.  Simple solution we have to pay to watch men at both AFL and VFL level, we should have to pay to watch the elite females of the sport and they should get a percentage of the gate receipts.

The AFL is scared as they don't want attendance numbers to drop, if you have a premium product people will pay to watch.  The issue with AFLW is it's not a premium product, the talent pool is way to small to cater for the number of sides in the competition.  It should be 8 sides max and only the elite players get drafted.

Expansion for the sake of expansion doesn't make sense, it killed the mens game for 10 years and the product is still no where near as good.

the "male" players are already effectively subsidising the aflw. all the money (most of) comes from the afl leaving less for the afl players to scrap for.

aflw is a long long way off paying for itself. probably more than 10 years at best.

also lots of questions re future i.e. will there be eventually 18 teams, will they play longer seasons, will they eventually switch to a winter season like afl,  etc etc

But Marsh said it was unhelpful to pit both groups of players against other, saying any thought of AFL players subsidising female footballers was nothing more than speculation.

“To talk about the men subsidising the women has not even been part of the conversation,” he said.

The men shouldn’t drop. Any female increase should come from the over-inflated saleries of the AFL commissioners.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
