Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

With the interest this guy draws, it would be great from the club to offer more insight into the journey, more regular updates, little clips etc. Involve the fans. Picture how NFL clubs do it with the interaction and transparency. Those little things can suck people into the club and raise membership numbers. Not just HB, they need to be better at it with everyone. How many people would click on a vid of inside Jackson's first couple months at the club, or a short doc on Jones going through his last pre season.

I could not agree more.

I can't speak for other clubs (because I don't have any interest) but our fan engagement is woeful. And i think it is real issue in terms of engaging younger supporters and building a strong supporter base.

The content you suggest is exactly the collateral they should develop. Shareable videos (eg on snapchat, dischord and insta) that are intersting (eg diet, traingin, interests) and build connection. Kids love content. Tv dead and such content is practically free. Great for sponsors too.

A good example was the trade day videos the club posted. Good stuff and so so easy (credit wmwhete it is due).

Build an awareness of Bedford, swallow, neita etc etc. My 17 year old son knows more about RJ Hampton than any young demon player. If it were not for demonland so would I.

In this day an age it is a complete own goal not to be doing way more in this space.

I'd be surprised if he didn't have a number of setbacks. That's the nature of his injury.

As long as he gets there in the end...

What has puzzled me is whether there is any medical evidence available to the Club to suggest that he can get there in  the end .Freo of course tried everything including surgery in Germany to fix Harley's calf problems.Probably all that remained was  trip to Lourdes . All to no avail. In the end of all this the Dockers had decided by mid 2019 that despite their very best efforts sadly Harley wasn't going to make it and they not unreasonably let him go.Has anything changed which would give us something other than a mere hope that Harley would be right for 2020?

Honestly I fully expected him to have setbacks during his time with us so this is no surprise. I still say we give him a rookie spot, what is it really giving up? Most rookie listed players end up doing little anyway, it's a gamble and when we took him on I never thought we'd see him before mid-late season at the earliest.

If the club is throwing all the modern evidenced based treatment at this, Bennell is shot.  Finished.  Capput.

Why?

Coz Freo tried it for 2 years.

I can’t wait for the presser that says the club is now employing a psych to help his calf issues.  Come to think of it, most physios think they are psychologists anyway.  The top down approach.

He’s had completely different treatment since leaving Freo. They cut the area out of his calf that was rubbing on his nerve.

It might work it might not but a minor setback should not be make or brake it should be expected.

My guess is that the club is more concerned about his gluteals than his gastrocs.  The top down approach mark 2.

In the case of HB I couldn’t agree the less. The less spotlight on him, the more chance for him to him to just focus on walking laps and kick to kick on a slow build up the better. He’s had enough spotlight at this point of his career to just leave him alone until he makes it or not.

Geez I hope this bloke makes it back.

There’d be nothing greater than to see him sprinting off the wing following broken play, in a tightly contested Grand Final, enter the forward fifty, look for pass options, and then slot the winner from a tight angle in the final seconds of the game. Next stop, Hollywood.

Short of that, I would love to see him as a regular in the red and the blue by round one next year.

It’d have to be one of AFL’s great comeback stories.

Smoke and mirrors this news story imo.  To ward off any evel minded spirits getting near us.

A calf injury on already dodgy calves is a very worrying sign

Calf injuries can be bastards at the best of times.

He's had the injury, he's gone through an extensive medical process, he is passing through an extensive rehabilitation and in that, is performing well towards the complete recovery in a progressive manner, he'd be right and valuable for the Dees. Even if we just brought him onto the ground for short stints of goal magic, at first.

Too right. We would have no interest in him if he was to be so injured without recovery after all of this time in the passage of recovery; further, if he was not displaying considerable (time-tested) recuperation. However, the MFC does have an interest in him and is working with him for the future ... that says more to me than negative outcomes.

Speaking of fan engagement binman why don’t the dees look outside the square and be an innovator for once rather than be a follow of other clubs.

I think that fan engagement would dramatically increase if after every home game they have players available to fans for say max 30mins to talk, get autographs and take photos.

Whether we win or lose the home game it’s a chance to mingle and either celebrate or commiserate with the players.

The NBL does this and it’s awesome. I’m a member of the Brisbane Bullets and even  after we lose u can talk with the players and discuss how frustrating the game was or where it went wrong or blame the refs (which is my favourite). On the flip side when we win it’s great to chat and celebrate together.

it would take some organising but given its 30 mins out of their week it’s hardly a massive time impost.

it’s just a thought and I reckon it would be a massive winner for the club but doubt it will ever happen.

This was never going to a straight line to playing. You could keep him training and have a punt at him mid year if he gets going but then anyone else would get a shot at him first. It’s a base payment spend with our last spot on list for a player who pre injuries was on track to be a top 10 player in the league. If it is minor and would still see potential for him playing back half of the year then as long as his application and attitude has been top notch  I would take the punt on him over an untried kid with a low likelihood of success and definitely unlikely to get any shot in 2020.

Is there anything stopping another club with a free list spot (if there are any) offering Bennell a contract now? I'm not suggesting that there is one out there ready to pounce. I'm just curious about how the sysem works.

Players use to come into the redlegs area after games but it stopped quite a few years ago because of the hero's who used to abuse them at times.

True, but I don't think it's a good idea in the particular case of Bennell.  Too much risk that our regular doomsayers may turn out to be right and he never plays again.  Better to do this with players who do not have such an injury cloud over them.  In any case you have to be careful to chose players who will react well to the extra publicity.

The problem is, Bennell isn't officially an MFC player at this stage, so to use him for media coverage and fan engagement would be seen as exploitative. You can't really benefit from someone who is not on your payroll.

As for Jackson (and any other first year players) it could be that the club is trying to minimize the pressure and exposure on them. They're 18 year old kids after all, and if you read through the recent article by Jackson you get an insight into how intense the experience is right from the start. MFC of all places have learned the hard way about not diffusing the expectations on young players.

In saying that, 100% agree they need to do more with the rest. It's the characters that get the kids in. They all love Maxy, he has some personality, some defining traits, but aside from him it's all a bit vanilla as far as what we see. Even doing something like giving Trac a GoPro for a week (maybe at Maroochydore?) would be a start. He's a big personality as well, so he's another one the kids could get around.

It's a tough balance, and the weird bit is the actual quality of our content and visual identity has drastically improved over the last 5 years, but more innovation is needed for sure.

One question that doesn’t seem to have been resolved is whether the setback is the one that was noted on Demonland on Monday as a “tight spot” and from which he had already returned to some light work including kicking with either foot on Wednesday or whether it’s something new altogether?

If the media are relying on Demonland for their news, then they’re behind the times.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side.
