Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

We put Petty up forward because we literally had no-one else.  Mitch Brown was a delisted veteran who we've picked up as a rookie.  And Jackson hasn't played a game yet.  Presuming all is fair and equal, you've got these 3 ahead of Joel Smith.  Think you've proven my point.

As for shifting him back, I just don't know what role he fills.  Is he our 2nd/3rd tall?  Having him competing with Lever and Oscar?  Is he that mid-sized defender, competing with Hibberd and Hore?  He's not a small like Nev, and he's not a Salem-type.  And given our tall forward stocks, if someone went down in the backline, Petty is a capable replacement.

The initial point was that some think that having a fit Smith will make a significant difference to the team.  I just can't see where he fits in, and at whose expense, and quite frankly, I just don't think he's good enough in the first place, with many players ahead of him in competing positions (as you've kindly pointed out above).

Agree with your point that we can’t be relying on him, although of course we shouldn’t be relying on anyone to make a significant impact outside our top players.

As for what position he should play - I think all players should train for their best position and develop their strengths. There’s 45+ spots on the list to field a team, get each player to do what they do well first. What does Smith do best - move incredibly well with good size, where’s that best utilized - the backline.

As for team balance: Frost is out down back, Fritsch is in forward and Petty is forward. -1 back, +2 forward.

I was a Petty down back fan but he lacks speed and doesn’t seem a natural contesting for position, where as his marking and finding front position are strong traits. On the theory of developing players at what they do best it makes sense to try that marking/presenting ability as a forward, even with a packed depth chart.

JSmith imv,  is not a tall; and not a small, obviously.

I my mind, I think JSmith will be our new, to become competent, 'swingman'_

An ex basketballer, so should have good hands and mind in close,  probably could play in all sectors For/Bck/Mids.

I see him as a medium who plays tall, and good below his hands.?

My tall forwards bracket are TMc, Weide, Petty, MBrown, LJackson, May, Gawn, Preuss.

Just to clarify, are you proposing taking May out of the defence permanently or just moving him forward should a need arise?

Frosts’ role is there for the taking is it not? If we want Lever to play the intercept then its Omac or Smith for the second tall defender. Smith offers more defensive flexibility I suggest.

Can i ask everyone's honest opinion on the melbournefc.com media coverage on the camp..

Cheers.

Thought it was crap compared to previous years. I have enjoyed the one on one interviews but the stories and the humour in previous training camps was far better. Hated the limited vision and photos and think some of the contributors on here would have done a far better job as volunteers. If this is an example of what our media people produce, when it's their only job while they're up there, then I think they are being payed under false pretenses. By all means post snippets on twitter but how can our own media department not understand the member and potential member demographic?

You make some good points. I was one who thought his best position was forward and I was sure he would be played forward. That does not appear to be the case. Agree that it is hard to see where he fits in down back.

I can also understand why you dont rate him that highly.

All that said I really reckon he has something. And i expect him to play most games.

Agree wholeheartedly.  Our media department in covering this was quite [censored] poor compared to other years.

What a ridiculous comment.

Please list the number of staff who were up there, their roles, their position descriptions, KPIs and salary.

(You may want to note that all the content produced by MFC from the camp was credited under one name).

Honestly, having a sook about training camp videos not being funny enough is one thing, but claiming people you don't know, let alone what their jobs are, are being "payed under false pretenses" is next level stuff.

Touche, that's like me asking people for a source isn't it? How about; if there was a cast of thousands paid squillions then there output wasn't as good as it was in the past. Conversely, if it was the work experience kid, the output wasn't as good as it was in the past. Dazzle asked for honest opinions regarding our media performance, that's what I gave.

(You may want to note that all the content produced by MFC from the camp was credited under one name). Aha, so it was under resourced and perhaps that was why it was not as good. (My work experience analogy might not have been so outrageous.) Gee think about how busy the kid must have been running around taking his 4 photos every second day and the 90sec poorly filmed bit of action. Then it was get it up on twitter and then ..................

I did enjoy the interviews as I said.

Well that's pretty funny, I just gave an honest opinion to a question that was asked by Dazzle, a question that you didn't respond to but instead decided to attack my opinion. You must have been enraged. Enough to not be accurate. I said "the stories and the humour in previous training camps was far better" I never said anything about funny videos. As to "next level stuff" let's be honest, you and I have had a number of differing opinions of late. That has surprised me as that hasn't always been the case, or at least our differences have been cordial. I suspect that you decided to pot me due to history and I think you're bigger than that.

If we're talking Smith here 'bin', I think we're in trouble if he plays most games.

Like Frost I think the athleticism he offers is often undone by poor decision making.

This year I'm pretending to be oblivious to all pre-season  hype and maintaining a calm and rational demeanour .

Hope you're well young man.

Yes, you might be right that with the second paragraph. But I think he has significant scope for improvement where's frost doesn't. As I noted I just reckon he has something. Also as an elite basketball his decision making should be pretty good.

If we have fit, good list to choose 22 from each week and Smith is in that 22 it will be an indication he is up to it not a sign we are in trouble.

Time will tell.

I thought it was lame. When they trotted out the footage of a handful of players walking down some steps, I thought - is that all you can come up with? The rest was for the most part bland.

Burgo’s ‘ Daily Camp Diary’ a few years back was great quality and one that most remember for good reason. I thought this year we were getting more content as opposed to last year, the quality didn’t quite stack up to Burgo but i guess it comes down to what the individual craves.

All I remember from last year’s camp was Hibbo doing some sort of tribal dance in the middle  of the group and Salo’s Barber Shop.

The thing that is frustrating is that there is no need for all of the video content to be of a professional production standard.

And whilst tbe the standard player interview had its place they are usually pretty boring and dont give much insight about the player himself (boys are up and about, tge new giuys ate settling in but can't cook, a hood chance to bond yada yada yada)

Post somw smart phone clips giving an insight into who tbe players are and some inner sanctum behind tbe scenes stuff . Quality doesnt matter. Kids wstch hundrrds iof ow quality clips on their various platforms. Rhey could care less about quality.

Easy, cheap and fans, particularly ypung people love it. Nba clubs do it all the time. No excuse for us not to be doing so also.

I reckon you'r right be.

Dland reporters have provided some high quality commentary and photos without any huge infrastructure or structural support.

The Qland troupe maintained the standard and well done to them.

The club provided content is necessarily formulating c as they are probably offered to conventional media. We still do not have enough clout to get the content on that media, unless it is Max's leg.

Its good that the club a team least posts its content to us but we are unlikely to get more cover until we have success.

Who knows Dland posters may have job opportunities (ie hardbacks son Liam) as we begin to forge our next premiership. By the time we have completed our three peat Saty, Baghdad, and George will be the Joffa of Demons.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
