Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

2020 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch

Jack Carroll is a kid that I saw in the 2019 Futures game and he impressed with his time and ball use efficiency. Reminded me of Scott Pendlebury.  Kicked a beautiful goal in the last quarter that showed his composure and skills.
I thought he was exactly the type of youngster we need.  Maybe even think Simon Black in style.

In the WA combine testing, Carroll had very good results for the vertical leap testing. Unfortunately there is no decision making or kicking efficiency tests as these are Jack’s strengths. I didn’t expect him to win the sprint.

And don’t forget he was a teammate of Jacko and Riv in the 2019 East Freo Colts.

Over to you JT to get it done.

Isn't he rated pretty highly (likely inside the top 20) - i.e. will go well before what is our current pick?

That would mean the only way to get him would be to trade the likes of Viney or Brayshaw - surely we wouldn't do that for a kid

He looks the goods but will be gone well before our first pick. Our first pick currently sits at 23. This will slide back further with academy bids etc. Unless we trade serious talent or our future first rounder to get into this years first round, we won't be getting the Carroll or Macrae types unfortunately.

We traded this years first rounder to get Pickett in last year. IMO it's a good strategy as you get an extra year of development into a talented young kid. You just need to get the pick right and then get the development right. I reckon our drafting under Taylor has been pretty good, but our player development issue has barely improved for decades now.

The other kid from WA I like that might be around at our current first pick is O'Driscoll from Perth, he played seniors this year and I watched him in the Semi's a few weeks back, looks like a good kick nice size.

What position / role does he play?

Gonna be a bit of a lottery where players go beyond the top handful, every chance a decent one slides

O’Driscoll probably gets picked earlier than Carroll. I think he is top 10-12.  He is a tough kid and good pace. Obviously not unlike Clarry Oliver imo given his “ginger” hairdo. Clubs with like him as he is ready to go in 2021 from round 1.  Expect the Dockers or Cats to grab him in the 10-14 range.

Would be nice!

Jet on both sides of the body. He actually moves a bit like Oliver IMV. Doesn't have that same burst from stoppages, but very smooth mover. Would love him in our midfield.

The big question is what do you do in circumstances where due to the number of academy and father/son selections, your own first pick effectively sits in the early 30s?

Do you give up on the draft this year and target specific players to fill your requirements or punt heavily in a field where there are a lot of unknown quantities?

I’m amazed he has left out Nathan O’Driscoll. I had him top 12-14.

I think he is one of those players that could easy slide to our pick, I think there is a number a similar mids in the draft.  He has a big advantage that he has played senior WAFL football this season, I rate him higher than Jack Carroll.  The other player that will be around same mark is Nik Cox, never seen him play but like 199cm key forward/back.

Yes I agree that our pick “23” probably will slide given the number of Academy, father son and NGA allocated players.  If we keep “23” it probably turns into 26-27.  Assume preferred pick 15-23 guys like Jack Carroll, Eddie Ford and Archie Perkins are all gone and unlikely to slide. Players at that mark 26-27 would include

Zac Dumesny - taller half back with good skills and played SANFL Senior footy in 2020. Andrew Mackie style of player.

Jack Ginnivan - skilled smart half forward who has ability to play wing and push forward.  Bendigo lad. Conor Rozee type.

Bailey Chamberlain - speedy winger who debuted to West Adelaide seniors late in the year. Good pace and skills up to AFL standard.   Think a young David Zaharakis type.

Isaiah Winder - skill indigenous mid/forward who played senior footy at Peel in 2020. Great results at WA draft combine in sprint and endurance.  Jack Martin type.

Dees should look to make a bid for Brandon Walker from Freo NGA.  Suits our need for quick skilled youngsters.  Freo probably matches.

I've been reflecting of the proposed phase out of NGA picks in the first and second rounds and although I agree I feel rather aggrieved. One of the best aspects of our sport is the view to equality (as best as is possible in a commercial market) but the NGA was a total crap-shoot. In such an even competition with slight margins of advantage, some teams will massively benefit from a couple years of the programme while others - like us - completely miss out. I still support father-sons as I appreciate the romanticism unique to Australian football, but the NGA stuff is just freebies. I feel that our club should lobby for an alternative phase-out, where the draft-point concessions already given to the clubs which have benefitted apply to other clubs until the cookies are exhausted.

Add in 2 to 4 free agent compo picks and our Pick 23 will more likely be 29 or 30 ?

Agree Skuit.  But the AFLhas never been an even playing field with all manner of draft concessions given to clubs from interstate zones to priority picks to preferred state league picks to pre- draft listings.  Most applied recently to Suns and other interstate teams.

I know, and I agree, but outside of commercial interests we do still run the fairest elite competition in the world and I believe everyone involved accepts that it's an important and fundamental principle of the AFL. I'm not automatically anti-AFL HQ, so I believe that if we presented the case on evening up NGA concessions into the future then the league would listen. But the case needs to be forwarded. Those clubs arguing against such an ideal would be exposed pretty quickly, and as such I think for the most part wouldn't protest.

I disagree (and they're getting another NGA this year, right?). But I tend to see the good in people. Eddie was pretty magnanimous this year in some ways, and while baiting over the journey has been pretty good to our club. I doubt he would ever remotely support our extinction unlike Kennett - and I believe he would respect an equitable outcome as to NGA. As long as it's not a direct disadvantage or market challenge to the Pies.

Would Nik Cox be a possibility at Pick 23 for us? 199cm Key Forward. Could be a good option for us.

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
