Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Greg Stafford Goalkicking Messiah? - Possibly

Recommended Posts

The following means nothing coaching-wise but worth looking at Staffords goalkicking stats from playing days from 2001 to find an angle.  I think we're on a winner with this appointment based on this. At least he should understand what successful kicking should look like - or not.

                             GL    BH

2001                    19    6

2002                     26   10

2003                     20    5

2004                      6     3

2005                     16     9

2006                     15     5

Total                     102    38     or 73%  success rate

Brian Taylor                   64%  (one of the very best I've seen for method)

Peter Hudson               71%  (the best I have seen)

Christian Petracca       56% (over 3 seasons, but becomes 52% over last 2 seasons, but small sample size)

David Neitz                    63%

Tom McDonald              69%  ( last 3 years since moving to FF) - 77% in Year 1 of FF in 2017

Gary Ablett                     60%

Tony Lockett                  70%

Yep, looks nice.

But can he coach this particular discipline? Clearly the club are backing him and his style. He's been around the club long enough, they know how he operates, and how he educates the players.

Sigh, sometimes it feels on this forum that the only case that is put forward that legitimises someones role to coach other players, is if they were an out and out champion in a particular position.

Yep, I already said my bit on this in the Members Forum thread in response to a few having a cry over this appointment. I was surprised (not really) at how many jumped immediately to pff, what would a ruckman know about goal kicking? without looking any deeper at all. On paper I can't see how he could be any more credentialed:

  1. As a player, had a conversion rate that compares on par with or favorably with the very very best, with a good sample size
  2. Is already a coach at the club and has been for a long time, so there will be no surprises at all in terms of coaching capability

Messiah is probably a stretch, but it looks a good appointment to me.

Feel like you could just about drop this into the 'what to do with pick three' thread as exhibit C that the club intends to get Luke Jackson.

"So, Luke in the morning we'll have you doing tap-outs with Greg Stafford, then we'll send you for training with the forwards where we'd especially like you to work on your goalkicking, with Greg Stafford."

Hope they get along!

People seem to overlook the fact that we were the highest scoring team in the AFL in 2018. Improve delivery and consolidate our backline and there is no reason why we shouldn’t be there in September! ?

...though it must be said that big man Gawn's goal kicking numbers are not horrible.  I think frustrating is the right word to use with Max, because he is more than capable of roosting goal through the middle from 50m out and doing inside out checkside banana punts around the body on the boundary with total control, yet completely shanking them from 20m out dead in front.

It's all in that rather different head of his.

After watching the videos, I thought it would’ve been great for club to have done the data crunching like Nasher and actually put a slide together for Staffords credentials rather than the presenters giggling about how he’s going to fix out conversion rate.
Missed a golden opportunity they did.

Mahoney said also it was a competitive appointment and he beat 3 other applicants by some margin.  Not just a thought bubble   sco-mo like.

Good get CBD.

That's exactly what Goodwin said to the question from the floor about our dysfunctional forward line in 2019 and why can't we score more..

54%  since 2016 when he burst onto the scene.  40 goals 34 behinds.

Huge upside if this can be fixed could take him up to better than a goal a game (and the Brownlow - already being the best ruckman)

..and I think amongst the top teams for inside 50s in 2019.  Conversion and positioning seem to be the correctable issues.

It is a bit like putting: the better pro players have something like 25-28 putts a round whilst us mere mortals often go closer tp 35-40, but that is not the whole story.   The pros have fewer putts both because they are better putters but also because they set up many more of their putts to be  closer to the hole.

IF our forward / attacking coaches (and players) can set up more of our shots from front and centre rather than blazing away from the 50m arc, results should surely improve.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
