But hey, go criticise a high level afl player who has based his game on one on one marking contests because of a photo

Yes I'm judging from one photo, hence why I've called it my technical whinge. But you extend your arms to the ball as it comes in, they only need to be at full stretch when the ball arrives. May has hard flat hands and drops a few too many marks he should take.

His use of the body and spoiling is off the charts. Given his strength in the contest his marking is not.

There was a little bit of joviality between drills, but my impression is that they are down to business.

The volume and numbers of calls, voice and instructions seems to have increased. Body language looks like they missed the place and are ready to go. Even on a hot day like this morning they remained positive and disciplined.

Yes, they appear united.

Gus look bulked up a bit, I would say he has come back a little under done. He hangs out a lot with Oliver and seems to have great relationships with numerous others. So I'd say he is invested emotionally.

His last (almost) full season (17 games in 2018) he was ranked 8th in the comp for marks.

I know he's played forward and in other roles but he has a career average of 1.6 intercept marks which is barely above Oscar McDonald's 1.4. There was no shortage of the ball in the Suns backline for him to chip around kicks and marks.

From what I saw last year I stand by my comment that he has hard hands. Maybe a full preseason and health will see him hold more this year.

But one of the biggest failings of the Melbourne football club pretty much in my entire lifetime is that we are happy with good players being good and we don't develop every aspect of their game.

If these guys are out there training in November I want ever single part of their games dissected and improved on and I think for May that means marking technique.

DeeS, give him some advice from the sidelines when and if he mucks up an easy mark.

He doesn't have to take your advice but as most professional are about continual improvements it could give him some options.

Or he could just ignore and no harm done.

They all get harder feedback at times from within the club.

Pretty sure it won't upset or unsettle him so long as it is done in a positive, respectful manner.

I'l leave the cobbling to the cobblers and carry on with the squabbling. Although I've often thought about a big long email to Matty Egan with all my developmental ideas.

The other one for today - Toby Bedford surely can't wait to have Lewis coming on as a kicking consultant. He needs belief and repetition with technique.

You didn't say anything about intercept marking, you said "May has hard flat hands and drops a few too many marks he should take."

His career average for marks is 5.2 per game which puts him in "above average" as per AFL player ratings.

Intercept marking in the context of an under siege team is not entirely useful. There's too many circumstances that weaken that stat if you're looking deeply into it, rather than just cherry picking that one. Not only has he played forward, but there's also the rest of the Suns defence to consider (covering weaker defenders), his particular role with them (not an intercept style player) and midfield pressure (Suns in 2018 rated 4th worst for clearance differential, worst for intercept differential, 2nd worst for inside 50s, 2nd worst for contested possessions and worst for centre clearances).

Your critique was on his marking technique, but I suggest the stats (when you look deeply) do not back it up at all.

I agree about Toby. 

At one stage he dropped and easy drill mark infront of Goody. The coach didn't look very impressed.

Right technique, repeat and continually repeat, adjust to the situation and keep improving.

Intercept marks are the marks that matter for key defenders, I would've thought that was obvious.

Otherwise you are just pointing out that he can play kick to kick without dropping the ball. Wonderful. If the Suns are so bad at giving away inside 50's then why isn't he taking more intercept marks? The balls coming in a million times a game.

Watch him play this year and see if he spills a few that it looks like he should hold.

Again, you were critiquing his general marking technique, you said he drops too many marks and has flat hands. Intercept marks is not the go to stat for general marking technique.

The facts don't back up your assertion about his technique. I provided you with plenty of stats and context around the stat you decided to cherry pick, maybe you should re-read my full post seeing you're asking questions I answered in it already.

I've had a keen interest in him most of his career actually, so I've watched him a fair bit before he was in red and blue.
