Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

cornes not falling for it again, sounds like us last year and he still had us finishing 1st, it’s funny all the media saying we can’t use it as an excuse yet bombers are already getting a free pass for there injuries, so if they fail it will be yea they had lots of injuries in pre season blah blah
https://www.sen.com.au/news/2019/12/12/theres-an-injury-crisis-there-kane-cornes-picks-the-club-set-to-fall-the/

Conspiracy theory!! We made no excuses for our season because of injuries & then it comes out after...Bombers who have been hammered for so many issues...decide to get on front foot early...who knows ...they have a larger membership than us & maybe won’t be impacted so much ?

I think Wrecker is saying that Jones isn't in our best 22.....which is obvious if everyone is fit.

It wasn't one of my better posts. I was trying to say the injury list / rehab group isn't as concerning as last year. Not just that the numbers are less but the importance of the players to our list missing sessions isn't the same either.

Agree with the posters saying Tomlinson and AVB are in our best 22.

Weid needs to prove himself this year. I bumped into him grandfinal night and he said his hips which have troubled him are "cherry ripe". He also looks broader and bigger in the training photos. I'm not sold but the stage is set for him to prove me wrong this season.

Good post either way Wrecker.....

For me however, there is still a question mark over Tomlinson. Sure based upon game time with GWS, size, skill level , physicality  etc, he ticks the boxes......but as we've seen time & time again, different club - different game plan (if we have one this year), his role within the team, respect from coaches & players etc.....time will tell.

He had elite players around him at GWS like Whitfield, Green, Coniglio, Taranto, Kelly, Z Williams, Kennedy & Hill, just to name a few & all of these players are quick which buys time & options.

He may have to work a bit harder at Melbourne with our lack of speed.

I know speed isn't everything but again, time will tell.

I'd have AVB & Weid any day.

On Tomlinson I think predictability of ball movement is the key to his importance.

His role is to run up and down the wing that  we are not kicking too. He’ll block opposition switches and fill holes in our backline.

I loved Frost but he was unpredictable with ball in hand which would have been a nightmare for Tomlinson and why the dees let him go.

Injury notes from the media:-

• Jake Lever (ankle), Braydon Preuss (shoulder) and Sam Weideman (hips) have had post-season surgery

• Adam Tomlinson (calf) and Charlie Spargo (ankle) had minor setbacks last week as they begin their program

Injury notes track watchers:-

• Aaron VandenBerg, Austin Bradtke and Harrison Petty - rehabbers increasing their work load

• Oskar Baker and Mitch Hannan with Tomlinson rehabbers walking laps

• Joel Smith appears to be on his own programme doing light duties

• Neville Jetta, Kade Chandler, Lever and Weideman also on light duties

• Clayton Oliver trained on Friday with his left shoulder heavily strapped and left training early again

• Kade Kolodjashnij collided with Matty Hore at training and went off early favouring his right arm

• despite those reports from earlier in the week Steven May trained on Friday in no apparent discomfort

From the above as far as I can tell:

Lever - full training

Preuss - full training

Weideman - full training

Tomlinson - rehab, light jogging

Spargo - moon boot

AVB - full training modified for load

Bradtke - full training except for last Friday where he did little.  Load management??

Petty - out of rehab but load management.  Only played one of two match sims on Friday

Baker - rehab, light jogging

Hannan - rehab, 75% running

JSmith - full training

Jetta - full training

Chandler - full training but missed Wednesday.  Full training Friday

Oliver - full training

KK - 75% running

Jones - 75% running

TMac - Full training until Friday.  Watched training

Bennell - rehab, light jogging

Really unfortunate for the young fella. Nice to know they've committed to keep him on for another year. And I guess if it was going to happen now is better than in February again, gives him a better chance at 2021.

Silver lining for the team is the chance to add an injury replacement before March.

as a matter of interest, have any of the regular track watchers kept note of who is / isn't at or completing sessions?

would be interesting to calculate the % of players who are deemed to have completed all the 'public' sessions

as we know last year, too many players failed to get through a solid bank of preseason which grossly limited their 2019 prep

I think we’re doing well compared to other clubs.

For example Essendon have had numerous off season surgeries, West Coast’s two key defenders (McGovern and Barrass) have had significant surgeries and Geelong currently have 4 of their key players in rehab (Selwood, Stewart, Kolodjashnij and Duncan).

Most of our rehab have been peripheral players aside from Tomlinson.

However, no club seems to have been doing as badly as we did last year which is annoying.

True, but at least we have improved out of sight in this area.  I'll take that over anything else.

Having said that, the only way was up after the pre-season we had last year.

Which Selwood?

I'd hardly consider May and Melksham as peripheral for some that have spent, or are presently spending stints in our rehab group, though hopefully they are back our of it soon enough.

Bummer, but anything we get out of Bennell will only be a bonus. I can only assume that a small setback or 2 were to be expected, so it will be interesting to see how the club responds. I’m assuming he can’t just keep training with us indefinitely without a spot on the list?

Club will unfortunately have to make a tough call here I think... The fairy tale we all hoped would come to fruition is just that - a fairy tale.

Must be devastating for him to get his hopes up over that surgery.

From a business perspective you are probably right Steve - might be an early call, but that may well be the smart thing to do.

The feel-good approach would be to sign him up and allow him one year to come good (on the basis that there are always going to be hiccups in his recovery) and see if this pays off. if it does, we are a mile in front. If not, we are the value of a rookie contract out of pocket.

I'm hoping for the feel good approach - but I was never great at business.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
