Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Road to the draft with Jason Taylor

Luke Jackson in frame for pick 3. See him as a forward option. Don't see him as a full-time ruckman at AFL level. If we drafted him, would be playing with the forward group.

Interesting!

Interesting!

I think he was meaning he would be a forward early in his career.

When asked, he also said that Green was in the mix, and pointed out that we have bid on other academy players before, with the intention of actually taking them. He also mentioned Henry in passing. He hinted that there could be many potential trades of our picks.

Pick 3: down to about 3 players
Confirmed Luke Jackson is one of those, liked his improvement post national champs - has gone to see him play in person and play forward, and that he's always played in top junior games.
Hayden Young in the mix, likes his improvement from last year to this year

Wasn't asked much about Green but will bid on academy players as he sees fit
Tim Lamb (list manager) in ongoing talks about pick swaps
Will entertain swaps but aim is to be careful about trading down with the hope of player getting through, doesn't like the risk - if 0.5% risk you're not doing it (something along those lines)

Dealing for pick 8 based around a group of players that might be available as well as 30% of the top 30 next year being academy based
Hosts bring up Lachie Ash, Caleb Serong. JT doesn't really confirm too much about those 2, instead brings up Brodie Kemp and Deven Robertson
Gets asked about Weightman and talks positively about small forwards in the pool

Aims to take 3-4 draft picks, has a list down to about 75
Likes the top 35 of the draft and then the next group is more pros and cons
Pro Bennell
Still confident in the list, assessing it based on 2018 not just 2019
Talks up the resilience and work ethic of the 2018 draft class - Sparrow, Jordon, Nietschke, Bedford, Dunkley etc
Keen for Spargo to bounce back and bought up Harry Petty - unsure in which role - as a talent for the future

Summary of the interview (paraphrasing):

  • Pick swap with North – looked at next year’s draft which is compromised: 30% of top 30 tied to someone else.  Look at the DVI but deal needs to advantage both clubs.
  • We had a bit of interest in pick 3 during the trade period as it effectively becomes the first live pick.
  • Pick 97 is expected to come in significantly.
  • Lots of chats with other list managers re how draft/pick swap scenarios might play out.
  • Had two days with list management and day one they went thru top 20 to 30 players.  On second day they looked at the next  25.
  • We are looking to use 3 to 4 picks in the draft  (LH note: we only have 3 right now so maybe a split is on the cards).
  • Re picks3:
    • Have 3 players in line for pick 3.  Luke Jackson is in that mix.  We’ve done a lot of work on him.  Don’t see him only as a ruckman and could start his career as a forward.
    • Hayden Young in the mix.  Had a bit to improve and has done that.  Excellent decision maker and execution.
    • At pick 3, you choose best available.  Don’t outsmart yourself!
    • Pick 3 won’t necessarily influence what happens at 8.
    • Tom Green in the mix for pick 3 (LH note: sounds like we rate him highly and would bid for him)
  • Pick 8 -lots of good players around that pick:  Taylor mentioned Kemp, Robertson.  Interviewer mentioned Ash, Serong.  (LH note: my impression was Weightman not in the mix at that stage).
  • Harley Bennell:  Shown resilience.  Long process to go.  (LH note:  Taylor didn’t sound excited but then he is quite laid back)
  • On 2018:  Some things didn’t go our way.  Some mistakes were made.  Players are smarting from last year.  Proof will be in the pudding.
  • SSP and mid-year draft dilutes the mature age draft pool.
  • Petty is going to be a very good long term AFL player.
  • Taylor excited about what Spargo and Fritsch can do.
  • Players are in the club a fair bit and on their toes, as they should be.Feels eligibility for NGA and other academies could be scrutinised more.

Thanks very much for the great summary LH.

I don't think it's correct that we only have 3 picks.  I think we have as many as we need to fill list vacancies up to 40 if we want to but they're at the end of the draft ie currently after 97.

Quite right F5 - an oversight on my part.  Not many picks are used after #100.  Perhaps if #97 comes in to around #75 and the next one comes in again we may get the 4th pick in there.  Perhaps it depends on who is available late in the draft.  If no reasonable prospects we keep a spot open for the SSP (Harley Bennell) or a DFA (Harley Bennell) ;).

If he can become a KPF and hes as talented as people are saying, take him at pick 3.  You cant put a price on a superstar key forward.  We havent had one since Neitz.

Always take the talent.   We didnt when we took the robotic Weideman, and missed out on Charlie Curnow.

Interesting how he mentioned Robertson and Kemp around that pick 8 mark.

I honestly think without the bid of Green at the 3 its out of Jackson and Young.

I wonder if he is saying Jackson to force Freo to deal on 8 with a promise not to take Jackson.

If we like 35 players in the draft then 1 or 2 of those might get all the way through to pick 75 if we are very lucky but it makes some sense to me that we'd be looking for a pick in the 40's or around 50 to grab a slider.

So in summary....

> Jackson - a likely prospect and seriously considering him but not with pick 3.  More interested in Young & Green (obviously expecting GWS to snaffle him though).

>  Pick 8 - we might be more willing to target a specific player 'type' but will all depend on what happens on the night and who is still available at that point (this might also include a late pick swap).

> Bennell - Have taken the first step in a number of steps required before deciding.

Perhaps I misheard, but I reckon he said Jackson is right in the mix at pick 3. I think Twomey must have heard a few rumours, because he was very quick to ask the Jackson question.

It would be Young and Jackson if we could.

We could go there and celebrate with a pint or two.

Young at 3 and Jackson at 8 If he is still there, otherwise could be Kemp,Serong , Ash, or Weightman at 8

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
