Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Jack is growing into the role of leader.  Great initiative by him for helping with the young guys fitness and relationship building.

Sounds like Burgess has the team working hard in the off-season.  Great base from which to start the pre-season.

Turing into a real leader, can't believe people want him to step down, he may not be a polished speaker in the media but he bleeds for the club and that the first thing you need as your captain, think a combination of Viney and Maxy compliment each other perfectly. With T Mac as Vice.

For mine, directing players and showing what we should be doing are the first things we need in a captain. Bleeding for the club doesn't improve our delivery inside 50, turnovers or spread.

Great that he's doing a Beamer in the offseason, but I'll be more happy when he starts to communicate well on the field and stops being the worst user inside 50 in the comp.

We can't hear what he says on the field... he tracked at 71% disposal efficiency this season just above AFL average, when the team's playing poorly all the clangers stand out more, with a full preseason he will go to another level

Champion Data had a very detailed and contextualized stat about effective kicks inside 50, Viney was rated as the worst in the league.

Disposal efficiency is a very poor stat that has very little context around it and technically you can have a turnover count as an "effective disposal" in certain circumstances.

Sure, we can't hear what he says, but being at games you can see that he doesn't talk to other players very much, and I've rarely seen him giving direction on the field.

Just my opinion, but "bleeding for the club" is close to last on the list as far as our leadership needs go.

I think you will find any off the 18 clubs would have a fit JV in their 22, at 18 he walk into a club on its knees and flew the flag along with Jones.

Nat Jones decided to concentrate on footy for his last couple seasons, but you can't take the captaincy away from Viney now. The MFC already did this to Grimes and Trenners. Getting back to the article you will see he has leadership qualities and is only getting better. We don't have a Selwood or Pendelbury, but we can look after our young up and coming leader and produce our own version

I'm team Jack. I love his attitude, i love his desire, i love his aggressive nature. I think it takes a while to be a good captain, and i think he can be that, he has plenty of footy left in him and i think he will thrive now that there is no Nathan Jones, it's his capatincy now, Max might join, but its his.

Go back and watch his finals in 2018, coming off hardly any gametime or prep, he was huge.

Oh yeah, look not having a crack at Viney, he's one of my favourite players on and off, more just talking about areas we need help with as far as leadership goes and weaknesses (IMO) that I'd love to see him improve upon.

FWIW I think Viney will still be a co-captain next year, along with Gawn, and I hope we improve the support for him with more 'directional' type leaders and Jack himself starts to work on that area.

Jack is an amazing 'lead from the front/follow me' type.  Some stand out games were vs Crows in 2017 when Jesse had been diagnosed with cancer and couldn't play.  He revved the team into a frenzy and played like mad men!  Then the 2018 finals series speak for themselves.

He is now showing maturity and 'good shepherd' leadership characteristics in this northern training trip.  And I vividly recall he sitting with the inconsolable Weideman in the change rooms after Sam missed the set shot that would have won a game this year.   I wouldn't be surprised if there were other relationship building things he does which we will never see.

We know his leadership weaknesses but it is up to the club to give him a) the media training to represent the club without putting people to sleep and/or have a co-captain eg Max who excels at that; and b) the education to develop his footy IQ and ensure the 'generals' we have (May, Lever etc) get actively involved with Viney during games.

Good teams need backline generals who can see the game unfolding and have the time and space to direct play. It’s vital to have at least 1 and ideally more players who can provide structure and we have May and Lever.

Midfielders and forwards have to get their stoppages and starting points right but after that they have to dictate play and the game moves so quickly outside of stoppages I’m not sure how much field marshaling is achievable.

Viney has to be smarter with the ball but we need most of our mids and forwards to do the same and to be well coached.

The off field leadership sets the tone of the club and Richmond and GWS were both great examples - as were WCE and Coll - that a positive well led club goes a long way to onfield success.

Sparrow, Spargo and Petty - a random 3 guys who put their names up? Or 3 players on the fringe of the 22 who could all be important players if they make a leap?

Sounds like a completely different start to the pre-season than last year, when at this time at least half of the first 22 were recovering from various surgeries.  If the training plans are already underway and the guys are doing this plus ‘extra bike sessions’ etc, we should start pre-season in such a better spot than last year.  Jack taking some youngsters North to train in more humid/hot conditions to increase the load is a very clear demonstration of leadership.  I imagine the pressure is on for him to keep the captaincy, with Max snapping at his heels for either a share or the full mantle.  Good to see him stepping up and leading.

Good on Viney for showing some really strong leadership here. I have certainly been very critical of him this year.

Is it me or did the article really say that Viney put it out to the whole playing group and only Sparrow, Spargo and Petty were the only ones who put the hand up? If true thats absolutely [censored] poor. Especially when you have Muppets like Josh Wagner in the USA sinking beers every 2nd day.

Well Done to those young players putting their hands up.

I think you misread it.

Quotes from article:

"WHILE the Melbourne players are currently scattered all around the world on their end of season breaks, Jack Viney has taken three youngsters to Cairns, but not on a holiday"

"... the whole team is sticking to the program set by new performance manager Darren Burgess..."

Players are doing their training program wherever they are.  Pretty good effort all round, I reckon.  They will be primed for the start of the pre-season.

My reading was that he asked those who hadn't made prior arrangements ... not IMO pi55 poor travelling overseas in their down time, and it does sounds like most at least are on a fitness programme whilst away.

Was the West Coast game in Perth (R 14 I think) and he was injured as well.

He was as good as Joel Selwood in this game and his last quarter extra significant in getting us across the line, oh with Tommy's 5 goals and that last famous kick.

Thst is a benchmark as us the 2 Finals in 2018 and if he can get fitness and form like that our season will be a good one no doubt.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
