Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I'm not buying it, surely where not actually considering taking a prospective ruckman/forward....

Does not make sense at all.

I saw Jackson live and I don’t see him being pick 3. That’s a speculative punt.

He is an athlete.  Basketball aerobic movement.  No doubt.
But he is very raw still. Skills are lacking.  Tumbles the footy.  Needs at least 3 years development as athleticism alone at AFL level is not enough.  I know you can’t dismiss someone from interstate, but our record of holding stars from interstate is not great.

so who would I pick? Hayden Young has the skills, footy smarts and aerial skills to warrant pick 3. His delivery is absolutely needed. He would be our best kick from his first game. I would grab him in a heartbeat at 3.

Great... then we get two top ten draft picks in a few years time... happy with that.

Not if Freo are on the bottom or close to it. With Bell negotiating that could be an outcome where you get nothing, like Martin this year.

This is from Mark Seaby who is his ruck coach.

“I had the privilege of working with (Western Bulldog) Tim English as well.

“Tim at the same stage was probably a bit more of an all-rounded footballer because he’d been playing for longer, but Luke’s probably got greater physical attributes than Tim at this stage.

“He’s probably got the greatest potential that I’ve seen come through, in terms of where he’s at now and what he can achieve in the future.

“He’s got similar traits to those ruckmen that act almost like an extra midfielder at stoppages.

Peter Sumich who last year said that that Sydney Stack was the most talented WA kid in the draft also had huge wraps on him when I listen to him on the radio few weeks ago.

I will trust the judgements of these guys that have worked and seen first hand how they operate rather couple of rando's on the internet.

Because they haven't seen him properly play. He's a right footer, but he also uses his left foot to get himself out of trouble around stoppage. He is a whole different breed of a ruckman.

His upside is scary.

From what i saw in the Nats he didn't play forward nor did i see him kick a goal or take a grab there other than around the arc drifting forward maybe on a rare occasion.

If he doesn't offer a genuine forward goal kicking option or isn't likey to then why would we want a third ruckman on the list with pick 3 or 8 (which LH has highlighted, technically includes our first rounder from 2020)?  Makes no sense for mine.

So we are happy to push Big M out of the ruck and start blooding this fella in the next few years?  Where does Maxy go if that is the case?  Certainly not a genuine tall goal kicking forward option either and hit out talents would be wasted if he spent most of his time forward.

A reminder for about the 100th time in this thread that Jackson was 2nd in the Larke medal count, so whilst he has a long way to go to play excellent AFL footy he's not all potential when it comes to games against the best players his age.

We've also drafted a lot of players who had excellent starts to their careers and then have faltered, regressed or failed to reach their potential. Angus Brayshaw was pick 3 and had a great debut year and whilst he was very good in 2018 I think the jury is well and truly out on whether he'll be a talent or just a guy for the rest of his career.

Meanwhile someone like Fritsch was left out of TAC teams and came through local and VFL footy and I hope will be a big success.

I don’t know about anyone else but I would of thought Petracca fits that summary better than anybody.

Did you see what West Coast gave up for Kelly? I think it was 2 first rounds and 2 second rounders... Clubs will pay overs for quality players.

Oh great, another unbiased opinion.

I'll stick with the randos.

From someone who's worked with the likes of Tim English who is becoming one of up and coming talented rucks in the game.

So yes I will gladly take his opinion of these rando's who have watched a 2 minute highlights.

Not if they are on the bottom of the ladder and can do a Carlton and Bell would.

Also you are 2 years down the track with the kid and if you draft another you start again.

If Grundy was in this draft, do you think he'd be worth pick 3 or 4?

At the moment it's all speculation Red, we may pick Young or even Kemp, who knows. We are trying to maximise our draft position and if that includes putting the wind up Freo, then why not. We may force them to swap what they don't want to, to get all three of their choices, on the other hand we may really want Jackson, I think we do but what would I know.

All we know at the moment is who some journalists think we should pick and in what order.

Jackson kicked 8 goals from 7 games across the year for East Perth colts. He also won heaps of the footy in those last 5 games. I'd love to know the breakdown of time spent in the ruck/up forward for the kid in those games.

https://www.wafl.com.au/player/luke-jackson

That's a good link thanks. So he played 5 Colts games after the U18 Championships so judging him solely on the Championships is flawed.

Taylor said in his interview that he really focused on particular players - probably Jackson.  He got a lot of hit outs in those games so understandably played a lot of ruck.

I'm happy to take him if Taylor rates him.  Pretty big excitement factor.

I think the question is do we think Hayden Young is supremely better than other prospects, considering that Jackson will be gone by 8. If we take Jackson at 3, perhaps we feel one of the players we’ll also want will be there at 8 anyway. Assume the following

1. Rowell - GC

2. Anderson - GC

3. Jackson - Melb

4. Green - matched bid GWS

5. Young - Adel

6. Flanders - Sydney

7. Robertson - Freo

8. Serong/Ash/Kemp

it’s also possible that Young slips to number 8 if Adelaide and Sydney like other prospects, whereas there’s zero chance Jackson gets past pick 7.

Stephens has been linked to Adelaide so they may very well pick him in which case Young could still be there at pick 8.

Will all of Adelaide, Sydney and Freo pass on Young though? Would think that’s unlikely.

Freo could probably land Robertson with pick 10. They would be praying no bids come for Henry until after pick 10 and if that were the case, they would be well placed to pick Young at 7 if both Sydney and Adelaide haven’t already picked him.

There’s a lot of possibilities.

I guess my point is that if Taylor and Co view Young, Serong, Ash, Flanders etc all at a similar standard then it makes sense to take Jackson at 3 and then take whoever falls to 8.

Then there’s the possibility that Gws swap 6 for 10+22 from Freo when there’s a bid on Green, so that will also change things dramatically.

It’s going to be a very interesting 1st round

I’ve read comments along the lines of....

Hayden Young : “He’s a meat a potatoes kind of player“

Because we already have a team full of elite users of the ball by foot.

Dylan Stephens : “His highlights look good but I can’t see him him getting that kind of time and space in the AFL”

We have numerous players who continually miss easy set shots on goal or look to pass off rather than take the shots themselves.

What if we applied that same logic to Jackson’s highlights....

Yeah all made by couch amateurs. You gotta trust the experts you pay to do the job. Taylor said there was a 2 day conference to work through the candidates and Goodwin was involved so there are plenty of checks and balances. If Taylor and co think it's Jackson then the club needs to back their judgement.

Yes we do, ultimately we don’t have a choice, just opinions.

For anyone who might know,

Jackson’s ability to take a pack mark, and his set shots on goal (accuracy and range). The answer to those two questions would go a long way to the decision being a yes or a no. A lot of people throwing around “upside” and “potential”, we’re still waiting for Petracca to live up to his.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
