Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

If hes good enough to get drafted and play KPF at AFl level immediately,   he is a forward not a ruckman.

If hes a KPF and as good as everyone is saying, hes should be clear favorite for pick 3.    Always take a KPF over a half back flanker.

Yeah I just watch his highlights,

No chance that kids playing AFL round 1, and hes definitely not a forward

Not sure where to start with all this tbh.

No reason to take him at pick 3 if he's likely available at our next pick. Bizarre comment. The draft is for talent, it's selected in that order.

Appreciate your in-depth analysis of watching his highlights, but better footy minds than yours (and mine) made the suggestion he could play round 1.

“Maybe they see the value of a really great ruckman and he probably starts his career as a forward,” Twomey said.

“I spoke to a recruiter last week who said he goes in as a forward and would be a better player than Sam Weideman straight away.”

The surprising player in the mix for the Demons at pick three

Interesting.  It’s depressing about Sam though. Really hard to stomach that we chose him ahead of both curnow and Keogh now. both of whom look like future stars to me...well Curnow sort of is one now already. Preuss was a mistake and only good if max goes down so we do need another more mobile tall.

I still have hope for Weids. Think he has some good attributes and works hard. Needs a mixture of luck (mostly with injury), confidence and better delivery and he'll start to turn the corner IMO. Was always seen as a longer term prospect.

Preuss is just backup. We needed that, and we lost a player who was not worth a lot to us to get him, so a sensible decision IMO.

At 198cm, I don’t think Jackson will ever be a dominant ruckman. He’s a good accumulator around the ground, but he’ll eventually come up against other rucks who are 10cm and 10kg heavier and get pushed around. He also doesn’t have an insane leap like NicNat, who is 202cm, so bigger to start with.

His best hope to become a force is as a tall forward or defender, and IMO he doesn’t show the skill level. He’s not a great kick and hasn’t showed he can split packs with big contested marks.

Not worth pick 3 IMO.

Tend to agree although at the time I thought he would be a good backup for Max but I am not even sure about that anymore.

He is so clumsy in the air and on the ground.

Was named AA this year, so not sure I agree he will never be a dominant ruckman. BTW he's 199cm and at 18 could quite possibly still grow a little, if that's a big concern.

I agree about not using pick 3, but pick 8 shapes as a big chance IMO. Just strikes me as a bit of a bolter who is on a quick track of improvement, bit like Oliver in his draft year.

He’s clearly the best ruckman in a very weak draft class for talls, but I don’t think he’ll make the transition to AFL level very smoothly. Even at 199cm, he’ll be the shortest 1st choice ruckman in the league, and he doesn’t have a freakish leap to compete against bigger and more athletic ruckman. He hasn’t shown he has the skills to be a gun KPF or KPD, so I’m not sure where he’s going to excel.

Definitely wouldn’t use pick 3 or 8 on him. If we split a pick and got teens picks, then maybe.

Fair enough mate, can definitely see what you're saying there. I wasn't sure at first for the same reasons and have probably just been swayed given our current lack of tall depth.

is a passionate West Coast supporter and his favourite player is Nic Nat who realistically has about 3 years left him. Once he retires I can see West Coast throwing big money at Jackson to lure him back home.

Yes MFSS is kicking in right now but I really do see a big go home factor with this kid.

Personal bug bear of mine but height is a bit of a useless stat because how long a guys neck and head is can make the difference between 198cm and 202cm. I'd like to know Jackson's height to the top of his shoulders plus his arm wingspan. And his vertical leap which I can't find in the top results from the combine but apparently is quite good all be it not freakish.

At his height he might not be able to out jump the 204cm+ rucks but he might have the wingspan and leap to easily compete against the guys of similar stature.

My biggest concerns with drafting a ruck early are:
1. Injuries. I think Nic Nat and Kreuzer would've justified their draft position quite easily if they didn't miss so many games. Nic Nat has played 166 games, Rich 207. Kreuzer's played 188 to Cotchin's 234. Factor in the number of games where they aren't fully fit or go to the bench early and it might be closer to 30% less effective footy.

2. Replacement value. A 2nd or 3rd round pick can often find a competent ready made replacement, as can stashing development or state league options on the rookie list until required. Nankervis isn't fit to lace Nic Nat's boots but he can do the same job. That's not true of other positions.

And if he's any good by then we'll get a kings ransom in return.  We've seen this before (see Watts/Naitanui).

With early picks you should always be in the business of getting the best talent, regardless of position. Then back yourselves in to create a culture that makes them want to stay.

they would be that way that get 2 top 10 picks as they will match on Greene. stuff them I say - no deal on 3 regardless. bid on Greene and put them out of the rest of draft. take young at 3 and Jackson at 8 and walk away happy

If Jackson has the potential to be a gun key forward then I am open to the idea of drafting him, if he however is a potential gun ruckman that can play forward a bit no way. Not one starting All Australian ruckman has won the premiership in at least the last 19 years. I personally think ruckman are overrated, Richmond have nailed it above average ruckman who cost them very little in the salary cap. Load up on key forwards, gun midfielders and a lesser extent backs.

Dead set where in big trouble if a first year key position player would have more impact than Weideman next year. I am calling BS by that other clubs recruiting officer.

I dont understand the bidding thing,  How would GWS have two 1op 10 picks... dont they need to use pick 6 to get up to pick 3 if we bid on Green?

Surely they dont get to have Green and pick 6 too.

That is correct. The only way they get Green and a top 10 pick is if no one bids on Green until after their first pick.

It's admittedly going off Jackson's highlight package alone, but I put together a quick sketch for you DeeSpencer:

If say the draft goes like this, 1 GC, Rowell ,2 GC Anderson, 3 Melbourne Young, 4 Adelaide Flanders,5 Sydney Serong, and none of those clubs have called out Tom Greens name then GWS can go for instance sake, 6 Jackson, then Freo at 7 [or any club from here on] select  Green, GWS can match that bid  with the rest of their picks and also go into deficit on next years points to secure that player. That would be the end of their drafting for the night, but why would they care they have 2 top 10 players in this draft. Adelaide supporters are confident they will bid on Green, so GWS will want pick 3 to get another player before Green is bid on.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
