I love his attitude, but i just think he's an unfortunately limited footballer at this stage. very happy to be proven wrong but not seen enough to suggest he's gunna make it at this stage.

I'm in the same camp, he showed a bit in his first year but for me seems to be limited in his bag of tricks. For a small player he's not quick or has a great ability to jump high, disposal is ok but nothing special. I wouldn't be able to tell you his best position.

He will be alright that's the problem with the world today no one has patience.

it was good for a first year player and he kept garlett out of the side who was not injured. Gifted no he played his role, your opinions about players don't mean much, you know nothing what do you expect a Superstars in first year

I think his 2018 season is overrated on Demonland. His best game by far was his debut and he has been positively mediocre since with a couple of ok games thrown in every once in a while.

No real evidence of second year blues for mine, 2019 is about par. Just a fair way off AFL standard at this stage.

Spot on RD. He is not even in the top 5 when playing at Casey.

In regard to Spargo’s Casey form..... I agree, he doesn’t stand out.

I reckon it’s harder for small players to stand out In the  VFL  ,since there are more undersize players at that level.

The AFL has many tall players,like Cripps  and Fyfe at 6 ft 4 playing midfield.

When the ball hits the ground , players like a Caleb Daniel and Spargo have an advantage against the tall guys.Spargo showed this as a 19 yr old in the 2018 finals.

I’m hopeful he’ll return to that form in 2020.

Love his attitude but what are his weapons? Not tall, not fast, nor great closing speed so not a great defensive tackler. Can’t kick more than 40m so what have we got? Admittedly the above commentary would describe Diesel Williams of course, too small, too slow but he had that undefinable quality of being where the ball is or is going to. That skill you cannot teach or acquire, you have it or not. No sign that Spargo has that skill that I have seen.

I assume he is a nice guy and works hard on the training track, hence we extended his initial contract. I can't imagine he will get another contract without ticking off most of the items listed by CB in the previous post.

In fairness he did show glimpses of something in 2018.

He can’t be that far off the mark if he’s kicking 2 goals and setting up others in a high stakes semi final.

an encouraging 2018 was let down by a diabolical 2019

he had a fair whack of injury this year and he clearly stagnated in a poor side

interesting that they tried him further up the ground in the latter stages - he doesn't seem like a natural ballwinner like caleb daniel, so i'm pretty uncertain as to what 'role' he can - groom him as small defender?

I strongly disagree with this. The reason he kept getting games was because the disposals he was getting were high value. 

In 2018, he averaged 12.2 disposals and 5.2 score involvements. That's 414th for average disposals but 134th for score involvements, which indicates reach of his disposals was much more likely to contribute to us scoring than your average player. 

My impression of Spargo was that he was regularly "creating value": a clever knock to advantage, changing lanes to get us clear, finding a man in space instead of taking the first option.

I wanted to see him get 20 touches instead of 12, to be truly damaging. But I thought there was enough clever stuff there to give him time.

Yeah that's fine. I'm not convinced he'll make it, but I would think it's unfair to say he wasn't showing something in his first year, and the disposal to score involvement ratio shows he did manage to find himself involved in scoring chains at a higher rate than a lot of players. That might be coincidental, given our high scoring, but it does seem to support my observations. 

I won't be unhappy if he makes it, that's for sure.

Garry Ablett in his first season averaged 8 disposals in 12 games and 10 goals. Spargo first season, 18 games, average of 12 disposals and 14 goals. Ablett did not have second year blues though and managed to improve in his second season. Played some great games but also a few poor ones. Spargo is worth persevering with. Not as talented but just as smart.

Are you comparing the potentiality of Spargo becoming an Ablett with your analogy??

If so I think this an outrageous assesment!

Finally IMV Spargo is NOT worth perservering with and if he gets games next year, the club as a whole, is going Backwards.

Exactly. Not a midfielder.  Not a small forward.  Doesn’t have the tools, strength, skills, pace to make it imo. Smarts ok. But need to get the footy first.

Cant take a contested mark, cant get a crumb, cant make a tackle hurt, cant kick much more than 40m.

Spends more time shaking the hair out of his eyes than he does with ball in hand. Endeavor yes, talent no.

Cant see him making it.

As always though, i hope he makes a total fool out of me and becomes a star for the club.

Just because i dont rate him, doesnt mean i dont hope for the best for the kid. If i lose, the team wins and i will take that any day of the week.

I think you are being hard on a guy who is a part of a Team. To develop he needs to have the rest of the team around him playing well.. Charlie has played some very good games particularly towards the end of 2018 season when we were in finals contention . Frankly all players were down last year not the least was Charlie. He is not a Garlett who to me was a self interested $$ player and I liken him to Jeff Farmer, he has shown his best and his best is good.

Give him a go in 2020 when we have outside mids, when we have, hopefully fewer injuries, when we have a team wanting to do their best and I am confident he will be around the 22 mark,
