Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Gun target - Key Forward recruit?

Jones is far too slow to play the forward pressure role. Teams would set up rebounds off him every time. I think Jones' go since he's got another year, is playing the kicker role and setting up off half back. He's not a great kick, but at least he might be able to help Lever and May direct from the back a bit.

Viney as the small forward, I can definitely get behind.

What I saw this season is a whole forward line that doesn't apply pressure.  Do any of them know how to lay a tackle?  For the most part our forward line was dysfunctional.  Let's not mince words here AF.

Jones is in the forward line to get the ball a dozen times and kick a couple of goals.  Which would be a big step up to what we see now.

As for forward pressure,  he'd be no worse than the ineffective lazy lot that are there now.

In fact,  Jones is an ideal type.  Don't compare him to Eddie Betts and the like.  There are a number of different types of small forwards that can be effective.  He'd only be a fill-in for a year anyway

Anyway,  if his midfield days are gone and we're looking for better options in the backline then there's only one area left where he could play. Unless you don't play him at all - and that won't be happening because he's still better than 2/3's of the list (which is filled with C & D graders)

I completely agree that we didn't apply pressure in our forwardline. I think AVB and Hannan not being there were big reasons for this, as well as the obvious one, fitness.

AVB is constantly injured and we can't be relying on him.being available.  Hannan is overated.  I don't dislike either player but one doesn't play and the other doesn't play very well.

Got any other options?  Show me some talent

As for fitness,  try bone-lazy.  The team hardly gave a yelp all season and should be called out for it.

Actually,  Lewis did call out the playing group with his speech at the B & F.  Don't let them off the hook AF.  We've let them off the hook in the past by sacking coaches.

Look at all the assistants that have departed.  What does that tell you?  It tells me the message isn't getting through and the players are calling the shots again.

Occam's Razor.

Do you actually understand Occam's Razor?  I ask because your second last paragraph contains assumptions, and Occam's Razor states that (assuming a lack of evidence in favour of one explanation over the others) the explanation which requires the fewest assumptions is usually correct.

Also, it is neither an argument in and of itself, a form of evidence nor a proof.  It is simply a reasoning tool for use when you lack real evidence (which is admittedly the case with 99% of forum posts).

The Occam's Razor remark wasn't necessarily attached to what I'd said beforehand.

It was said to AF in terms of looking for the most obvious reason why we performed poorly this season.  And in my opinion,  you don't have to look very far.

One could conclude that the reason we performed poorly this year is because we couldn't be stuffed trying.  Or one could look for a more complex answer.  But in my opinion it's the former argument.

We did not turn up.

So AF may believe it's a lot more complex than that (I'm presupposing) and he has every right to have that reasoning.  At other times I might agree with him but not this time Ralph.

Bottom line is that the club failed and we've reverted back to kind.  If you don't agree so be it.

Look,  I get it.  People don't want to get too despondant about their team because they want to believe that success is just around the corner.  But that's not how I'm wired. I don't need that stuff and prefer realities.

So what is your evaluation of the season?  And I don't want any excuses.  Give me a brutal assessment (if you can)

By the way,  every team gets injuries and every team has off-season surgeries.  So if our list management team,  FD & Coaching can't cover for a few injuries,  then that's the fault of the club as well.  You're supposed to have depth in pro sports.

I agree that we need to look beyond Tmcd and Weideman.  Both “can” be our two key forwards but the list needs a depth key forward.

In the draft , Jake Riccardi, winner of the Round-Forhergill medal for best young player in the VFL- would be an excellent choice. 194cm agile CHF type. Only 20 but very promising.    I watched him v Casey and in the finals game against Box Hill. Will take a good summer in the gym.

Other options for JT are

- Charlie Dean (Sandringham under 18s). Impressive youngster who trained with Dees last summer. Could be drafted anywhere between 25-30 or 45-55.  More of a chf. Hopefully he is available around our pick 42ish.

- Emerson Jeka.  (Western under 18s). Big strong marking forward.  Played v Casey and has the basics of a key forward.  Could be available around the 50 mark. Strong like Hawkins type.

Macca, for what it's worth I think Toby Bedford (drafted last year and with a season at Casey under his belt) is a good chance to make an impact this year. Clearly not a key forward but will give that added dimension of genuine forward pressure.

Fair point and Bedford could be a genuine contributor.  We have to find a way and I suppose I'm looking at known commodities as well as speculation recruits.

Bottom line is that if McDonald & Weideman fired this season we'd be just looking for the add-ons to make our forward line one of the best.  And some back-up to the 2 talls.

But instead of that we've got Petracca,  Melksham & Fritsch as 3 medium sized forwards but we still lack real marking power.  And a forward or 2 who can play in a physical way.  The little fellas come into it almost as a matter of course if the big boys are fit and firing

Small forwards are valuable but they need to be working in a funtional forward line line.  So I'm advocating having one before the other.

Thus my call for Jones & Viney forward.  At least they"d fight hard for the ball and whilst Viney is a bit dodgy in front of goal he can get a lot better with a lot of practice.  Jones is fine in front of the big sticks.  And competition within the ranks is always healthy too.  They are both competitive beasts but both are good team men.

As I have said before, I sit a long way from the corridors of the MFC but I am hearing that we are discussing a trade for a forward that is middle of the road at best at this stage of his career. Not a lot that is solid about this at the moment.

Neither Jenkins or Casboult. I did hear a name but, at the moment I prefer to keep it close.

Has been linked to another Melbourne based club.

I don't want to enter into guesses at the moment. If this one gets to be more realistic I will put a name to the rumour. I can say clearly that it is not Joe.

So you can confirm they are a male. That narrows it down then ?

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
