Hey Dazzle, curious on your opinion of which of Young or Ash is more likely to develop into a successful winger or are they more likely to be half back flankers? i believe both have had stints in the middle this year?

I have done some work with Ash through the bushies. He is a quality kid and shows traits of being a very good player of the future. I am also bias and hope that he has a successful career.

I will put my neutral hat on and say that I would have Young ahead of Ash. While Ash provides speed and dash, his kicking at times can become unstuck because he is always running million miles an hour. I am not saying he is a poor kick, solid around ground when chipping it around, but i just feel that when the heat and pressure is on and intensity lifts once he will be in the AFL system, this could expose him even more. Played the back end of the year in the midfield and rack up your 20 to 25 possessions but i still felt the body of work as n on baller just wasn't there. Think of Shaun Atley.

Young in my opinion is one of the best users of the footy in the draft. Absolute sublime with his ability to bullet low 40m passes on both sides of his body. Yes he is genuinely a duel sided player with both feet. Plays his best footy across half back as the quarter back who will sit out the back of the stoppage and wait for the handball receive to then set up a counter attack with his foot skills, but also his intercept marking is exceptionally well. Had stints as a midfielder after the championships and showed that he has the ability to push up into the midfield as a genuine wingman who could deliver with poise inside 50. Honestly you just want the ball in this kids hands at every opportunity because he uses it so well.

So in all of that I would take Young ahead of Ash. Dont be surprised if Ash slides to the point thay he could drop out of top 10 calculations.

thanks very much for your detailed thoughts. it sounds like we couldn't go wrong with Young at pick 3. if we decide to keep that pick. 

as you've mentioned a few times Flanders is a really interesting one because he just seems to be rising up calculations all the time, seems a really appealing package as a player. 

if we were to draft young it'd be handy having him and Salem setting up plays off half back with their kicking.

I agree mate, I think Young just suits our needs more then anything. But also has the potential to play straight away and release Salem to a wing role on a full time basis.

The thing i like about Young's kicking is his penetration. Not only can he hit a target lace out, he can get it there quickly.

That kick against WA (whilst admittedly just one kick) was jaw-droppingly good.

I can’t help but see the Atley in him, but Atley also became a very useful player this year and some of Ash’s kicks look better than Atley’s. Overall technique a bit more sound? 

He looks the kind of flawed but high upside player you’d love at 10 but not at 3. Can he chase down and tackle, maybe start his career as a forward?

I’m still waiting for some more highlights videos to drop to see a player who really catches my eye for pick 3. Serong and Young both have a lot to like but don’t quite tick every box.

would you be inclined to split the pick or think we're better off banking on someone like Young at 3?

I know very little about these kids but the video I seen of Stephens impresses me. Your thoughts on how he compares  to Young would be welcome.

I am torn to be honest. Part of me thinks Young would complement our line up quite well, but if we are able to split with GWS then it gives us the opportunity at not only Dylan Stephens at pick 11 but also Jeremy Sharp at pick 18 who I rate very highly.

Stephens is your classic outside player with speed and dash. Shows the same similarities as Andrew Gaff but has that real breakaway speed like a Luke Shuey which helps around congested situations as his ability zip in and out of packs and hit a lead up forward on the chest with his left foot. Is quite composed and has a neat left foot. Don't be put off by his skinny frame though, kid goes in hard when it's his turn. 

Played 12 senior games for the Norwood Football Club. So has already had senior exposure which can only be good for his development next year.

Dazzle, I'm loving that you're all over this. I'm a little like you in that I'm undecided about the value of splitting pick three. You mentioned Bergman in another thread. I'm wondering whether we would look at him as the second banana if we did split the pick? I know you liked Sharp as well. Would you have Sharp ahead of him, granted they're different players.

I would have Sharp ahead of Bergman yes, but the Dees are huge wraps for him due to his potential ability as they think he has a big ceiling.

The other aspect is that we do know that reports have said we are really interested in Cody Weightman also. So maybe that's why we are trying to split to get the combo of Weightman and Bergman.

Look, I still like Kemp. I know the ACL impacted his season (obviously) but I think he's one that a number of clubs may end up saying 'why didn't we...'. If we were able to split the pick and somehow grab him and a Sharp or Bergman I'd be wrapped. I don't think so though.

The argument for keeping pick 3 is that we control our own destiny. Splitting it may mean we pick up a gem who went lower than expected but it also may mean that we end up missing out on who we're after.

The general fee I have in the draft is that Rowel and Anderson are by far absolute locks for 1 and 2 in terms of talent. They are simply the two standouts. From there you could reel off a couple of names for pick 3 like Young, Serong, Flanders, Kemp and Ash that would be around that mark.

Now If we are to split and have a pick at say pick 11 and 18 from the Giants, you could almost bank that Flanders, Ash, Kemp will still be around that pick 11 mark as I feel quite confident the top 10 isn't as locked as what it has been in the past few years.

I think around that pick 7 to 12, you will snag a very good player. I also have Dylan Stephens as someone I would like to eye off around that mark.

Wouldn't be confident that all (or any) of Flanders, Kemp, Ash will be around at 11. I think Flanders and Ash will go 4-8 and Kemp 8-12. 

GWS finishing higher than expected makes the pick split a bad option. Mahoney said on radio today that Pick 3 is on the table if we received an offer of two top 10 picks. If that's what we're demanding, 11 and 18 won't cut it. If we can get one or two top 10 picks it'd be worth it though. Would love to land say Flanders and a Stephens or Weightmann.

Regardless, I'm happy we're going to be drafting in the first round again this year. It's been too long and has contributed to our massive drop off.

Would be happy almost running naked down the street to trade 3 to GWS and 22 to Freo along with 57 and Frost to Hawks for 30 and 47
