Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

That’s a big call. You are saying that amateurs on DL, would not do a better job than fully paid, resourced, recruiting teams, who spend ALL their working life, for up to two years at a time, studying and assessing young footballers as to their possible future ability in the AFL.

Let me go out on a limb like you just did. I say that most posters on  DL, could not do brain surgery, as well as Australia’s leading Neurosurgeons.

Amateurs versus incompetents.

Pffft.

I know exactly what you mean.

The absolute lack of “Walk the Walk” with the obligatory excuses lined up.

How many players from The Filth Richmond and GW$ missed large slabs of the year, yet still managed to find a way...

That is the Leadership and Resolve I do not see at the MFC

Can you read 'SWYL'?

Or do you only see what you want and make up the rest.

There is no way in any post I have written this season that would indicate I think Jones & Viney were great in 2019.

In fact I've stated numerous times that both should not be Captains next year and you've liked those posts, so I'm guessing you've read & agree.

I don't think they are a major reason we crashed though, there was not just one thing.

A major one for me is that the list is not as good as many thought.

We're working to build it and make it better but this season shows we are not there yet...

Ok. The major difference is that you do not rate Leadership nearly as high as I do.

The List always needs tinkering, that is a given, but I have worked in the same Department when Leadership was prevalent and when it was atrocious and the differences were Light years apart.

Look at Brisvegas and there improvements, that is all about Leadership. We will know very quickly whether the club is serious m

Paul Roos and Graeme Yeats reflect on Nathan Jones’ brilliant, loyal journey to 250 games

Roos recalled a 25-year-old who immediately struck him as a “really good person”, who was relentlessly committed to a club that had gifted him just six total wins across 2012 and 2013.

“The first impression was probably just his character. I mean, really good fella,” Roos tells foxfooty.com.au.

“There’s such a correlation between good people and good footballers, so that was probably the thing – just a really good person, loved his family, loved his footy club, really was there for the right reasons.

“That’s probably the first thing that really struck me, there was no pretentiousness about him or arrogance – what you see is what you get.

“So that was sort of the main thing that really struck me, what a good person he was. I really enjoyed working with him.”

Roos appointed Jones co-captain alongside Jack Grimes ahead of his first season in 2014.

At the end of that season, the Dees skipper repaid the faith, signing a four-year contract extension through to the end of 2019.

If the red and blue faithful loved the hard-nosed midfielder before that decision, they were totally enamoured with Jones after.

David Schwarz says that Melbourne co-captain Nathan Jones’ performance against Gold Coast on Saturday was the perfect captain’s game, believing the midfielder was the difference between the two sides.

The 29-year-old collected 27 disposals, six marks and five tackles and booted three goals as the Demons overturned a five goal margin halfway through the third quarter to run out 35-point winners.

Schwarz says that Jones will undoubtedly receive the three Brownlow votes for the game at season’s end.

“That was a captain’s game,” the former Melbourne forward said on SEN’s The Run Home.

“He had to come into the middle. They needed something… they were in trouble and he just said ‘right boys, let’s go.’ You know what you get out of him, 100 per cent.”

“He’ll get the three votes on the weekend, he was the difference in getting Melbourne over the line.”

Nathan Jones will captain his 119th game for the Demons on Saturday, equalling Garry Lyon and Allan La Fontaine’s record.

This will see Jones rise to equal third place in club history for games captained, behind David Neitz (175 games) and Robert Flower (127 games).

Lyon believes Jones has conducted himself wonderfully as a leader of the Demons, particularly in difficult times.

“He could be arguably one of the most successful captains in the history of football,” the former Melbourne skipper told SEN.com.au.

“He’s found himself in a football club at a time when they were going through a really tough period, a tumultuous period.

“The temptation to go elsewhere would’ve been strong and he chose to stay. Him choosing to stay helped Melbourne pull themselves out of the mine.

“He was a really pivotal part of that, not only as a player but a leader because there was drama and uncertainty.

“Some of our greatest players wouldn't have experienced what Nathan’s experienced.

“He’s had a unique insight into footy, I mean he’s as well-rounded as any captain because he’s seen such drama and upheaval.

“But all the while, he maintained this incredibly high standard through it all, both from a playing point of view and also the way he conducted himself.”

Well you quoted this.

The doubters need do no more than listen to the commentary from the 33 second mark

Typical Jones signature play. Hanging out 20 metres from the forward contest waiting for the ball to come out for him to score a cheapie. Relies on others to apply the forward pressure. If the ball turns over  it’s swept away to the other end with Jones casually jogging behind. Been happening every game this season. Commentators do what commentators do.

A few things stuck out for me last night. Firstly, Fyfe is an extraordinary talent but is also just as impressive off the field. When he spoke about preparation and dedication to the 'craft' of leadership, it was hard not to reflect on where we're at as a club in respect to this. Secondly, he was number 20 in the draft. His journey was not a simple one but it reinforces that the elite of our game are not often the number one draft picks. Finally, what I wouldn't give for us to find an out and out midfield star like him....just one in my lifetime.

But wasn’t he not invited to some teammate/s wedding/s a few years ago? I’m sure he was talked about a s terrible leader only interested in himself on here and wedding examples were used.

Not sure how good a leader he is.  Freo are only moderately less dysfunctional than us. They don’t appear a very very switched on club.

Fyfe is all about Fyfe.

Dangerfield, whom finished second, was ranked 392nd for disposal efficiency this season and accumulated the second most amount of clangers 112. In the last four years he’s had 24 shots at goal from between 30-40 metres out and kicked two of them.

Umpires just look at who’s getting the disposals and nothing else.

Nail on head ET.  I have it on very good authority that more than one umpire checks the stat count on the AFL website before voting.  I know he was ineligible but Dylan Grimes 3 votes? Best defender in the competition IMHO. Stats are a false indicator of effectiveness.  The mark of a defender is not how many times they get the footy but how many times their opponent doesn't get it.

Totally agree with last two comments and add that the fix was in on MAX......Brayshaw was collateral damage along with some others> Probably not just our team either.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
