Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Going off highlights packages and what's been written ....

I picked Serong ahead of Young (in my mind), based on the fact he is touted as a forward. I think we need forwards, while I think out defense, if we don't have the entire back 6 out injured, looks pretty sound. Obviously that's just an opinion.

Just because Young played down back at junior level of course doesn't mean he can't play forward at AFL level.

Honestly though, reading and looking at highlights packages, Young, Serong, Ash, Stephens, Flanders, Green, Robertson ... they're all around the mark I would have thought, they're all around the same size, who knows how they will go next year.

I have no idea what kick you are talking about? When is this in the video?

No wonder. I went back to find it for you. It’s at 48sec. Only problem, on closer inspection it’s actually Weightman not Young. Still a very good kick though.
My 2 cents worth is the kicking skills of the top 4 in the finals was a clear significant point of difference. And we don’t have it. Young brings it Serong doesn’t.

Yeah thought it might have been that one (although personally I think the mark by Serong was much better than the kick in that instance, if 35 didn't fall over it wouldn't have got there).

Interesting on SEN this morning Caleb Serong was interviewed. When asked who out of all the coaches had impressed him the most at draft camp he said Simon Goodwin.

Don't think we read too much into it, but i thought that was interesting.

Serong is a good player. Definitely an option at 8 if Kemp and Stephens are gone (Strange JT did not mention him). Better option imo than Weightman as he can play forward and is a proven mid.

Serong Would develop as a small forward and then go into midfield after about 2 preseasons in gym and afl fitness.

One thing Serong doesn't need is gym work. He's already solidly built. If anything, he has been told that by several clubs that they will trim him down over the pre season so they can start to really expose his midfield talent as well as forward where he will start his career.

Serong racks up disposals, tackles hard, marks the footy well, is excellent by hand but unfortunately he regularly butchers the ball by foot.

I think he will slide a bit due to his poor kicking skills. I hope we don’t pick him at 8.

Well I think you're right in terms of who we will select but it says volumes about Goodwin.

I didn't bother opening the thread on Goodwin during the season as I suspected it was full of wrist slashing and irrational criticisms of him.  But I saw enough references in other threads to confirm my suspicions.  But one thing is pretty clear.  Goodwin is an outstanding communicator and representative of our Club.  Whilst I think his pressers are bland and usually say nothing (a frustration to supporters seeking information but probably a skill in itself) he has been front and centre at attracting players and staff to our club.  When interviewed players leaving or joining our Club invariably mention how impressed they are with Goodwin and footy department personnel such as Burgess and Richardson have said similar. He is largely responsible for attracting targetted people to our FD.

I know there will be those who question Goodwin after last year but it's pretty clear from what Burgess said (16 of the 22 who played in the PF had post season surgery) that 2019's performance is mainly the result of fitness and injury to players.  I think Goodwin is a fantastic coach and we are lucky to have him. Next season will tell us a lot but I'm supremely confident.

I am a Goodwin fan.

The fact that he has been able to play a huge role in bringing in blokes likes of Jordan Lewis, Jake Lever, Steven May, Ed Langdon, Adam Tomlinson and Harley Bennell speaks volume on the guy. Watch the interview with Alan Richardson and he even mention that he was blown away how impressive Goody is with his enthusiasm, dedication and that he was an incredible hard worker.

I have spoken to people in the past who have had dealings with him in the past and all said the same thing in terms of that you couldn't find a more impressive and dedicated individual who has a sense of real care and compassion for his players.

I reckon we'll know by about a month in to the season - even if we are 2-2 or maybe 1-3 - if Goodwin has a future and it will be because he'll finally relax in his media conferences and show a bit more of himself. Do that and I think a lot of views will change. Whether it's humour or anger it's time for passionate, dedicated and a more human Simon Goodwin.

Needs to sit down with the Reverend and have a chat about how he did it. Then if the rest of the club comes with him in a positive and professional way (unlike mid 2000's when it was Daniher covering over the cracks of a decaying club) we'll be on the up.

I know a player drafted by Melbourne who copped some stick from a couple of premiership coaches. The premiership coaches turned out to be right. The interviews and as the American's say 'game recognise game' can be a vital part of the draft process. I wouldn't want every player loving Goody, but I'd love to know who came away with mutual respect.

strange player.. not too much said about him really. considering he's been thought to go top ten all year, not many talk him up.

Would be hilarious if he turns out to be the best pick of the draft in a few years time. Would pretty much signify that everything anyone ever knew about drafting could be thrown out the window, lol

For the life of me, I cannot see how anyone can  link how Goodwin operates in press conferences - which we ALL know - have very little resemblance to how any coach operates day to day - and how players/staff react to him - and then FURTHER to how he has a future in the game...

They

are

mutually

exclusive

things.

We were on board. Will be a very good player.  He probably may be not able to crack Dees midfield right now so better outcome for him was Freo grabbing him.

Thoughts on Serong now?

Of Freo's draftees I would have taken either Young or Henry before Serong.  I think they did very well out of that draft but I also don't think Serong offers much of anything we are short of.

I also happen to have a gut feeling that the Demons have ended up with the best career-span player available at all three of their selections, so I'm not hurting and wish Freo all the best.

Ah, a Fremantle supporter with 20/20 hindsight. The foresight aspect at your club is somewhat up for debate.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
