Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Lyon: Save $$ on Tomlinson, Go All ln on Whitfield

We have to be realistic here. It's all well and good to say that we should save money for Whitfield, but who's to say he'll want to come to us? What would we do if we didn't sign Tomlinson for free this year in the hope of getting Whitfield next year, for Whitfield to re-sign with GWS (With the AFL's help of course). We miss out on the decent recruit as well as a great one...

I recon the FD would know what their chances of landing Whitfield next year are, and if they're not over 90%, don't run the risk. Sign what you know you can now.

100% agree. You can't be making decisions on the hope someone comes to you.

That's just poor management.

If it gets to next season and he's available and wants to come to us, then we look at ways to do it. That may involve trading out someone like Brayshaw to free up cap space, but you need to make decisions for the here and now.

He would demand a long term 7 figure salary to wheel him away from GWS. Lets assume we pushed ahead with all of the trades planned this year and we still fell short of the outside silk that is missing. And let's assume we would be pushing up against the cap next year. Where could we get money from to make that trade happen, because believe me, he is worth every single penny.

1. Retire Jonesy - there is 350- 400K

2. Put one of Brayshaw / Petracca / Viney on the trade table - there is another 500 - 700 K there.

3. Possibly look at moving on AVB or J. smith depending on contributions. Possibly another 300K.

Youd also need to make adjustments to cater for anyone else coming out of contract and on next year.

That is how you could probably get an immediate 1.1M possibly even more if we had the ability to front load to reduce the pressure on future player contract renewals.

What say you Demonland - would you make that offer?

I'm also not sure whether he'd be RFA or whether we need to put in some picks to sweeten the deal. But that wouldn't necessarily be an issue as we could offer the player of the 2nd point above.

More proof of why Lyon never had a successful career as a coach. He does not read the play or players very well. Both of these players would cost too much. We need to use pick 2.

What a ridiculous statement and shows your ignorance, its an an opinion and he is saying have a crack at .. why not? Cant see what coaching has to do with it.

Easy to throw those words out by Garry but I’d be staggered if he would chose Melb over Carlton, Hawthorn etc

Thats pretty much what he is saying though, to be in with a chance save our money and throw it at Whitfield, make him an offer that is better that the other clubs and at least it gives us a chance, we may not be able to do that if we secure Tomilnson..

Would you rather have Tomlinson in the side next year, or go hard at Whitfield for the year after. its a very fair question, not sure why you and others are are so salty about it.

Not salty, but essentially making a story of something that won’t happen.

Ok, apologies for calling you salty, How do you know it wont happen though, unlikely as it may be, the whole suggestion is to give it a shot.. he wasn't saying it will happen.. do you not want the opportunity to have a crack at a player like whitfield?

its essentially what happens on this forum, in the workplaces and the media everyday, its the opinion business.

What does pick 2 have anything to do with Tomlinson or Whitfield??? They would both be free agents.

And since you are so prophetic over coaching careers, would you mind imparting some of your divine wisdom on whether Goodwin will work out?

So you're saying we should ignore a player that is essentially guaranteed to come to us, so we may have a small chance of landing a better player?

That's poor list management. If we sign Tomlinson, and then Whitfield indicates he would like to come to us, we'll just have to trade out a decent player to free up space. Stalling for another year is not going to help us in the long run.

Interesting. I can see it both ways. The MFC have to become more bold with recruitment.

This is why years ago I said many times, we should have taken Luke Ball in the draft when he was there. Yes I know he only wanted the Club next door, but we have to grow the nads.

Tomlinson or Whitfield

Big difference Big Risk

The story was about getting Whitfield and if it meant we couldn't afford him due to signing Tomlinson would it change our approach.

And for what its worth,  to "trade out a decent player to free up space" would be irresponsible and lack foresight, would you rather lose Petracca to acquire Whitfield and so that we could also have Tomlinson? i think id rather for go Tomlinson, go large at Whitfield an keep our other established players.

But like i say its the opinion game.

We're all working on the hypothetical "If" though. Tomlinson is almost certain to join, while I believe there would be less than a 20% chance for Whitfield joining us unless we offer a deal he cannot refuse.

Also, I never said Patracca. Have a look at the players that are OOC next season. Hunt would be a good 300-400 thousand, then there would be reduced contract offers to Hibberd, etc, who are in the twilight of their careers.

This type of thinking shows how the AFL is lagging behind other codes. In the NBA for example team management is about talent acquisition and building assets which can be later traded for improving the roster (list). Why not pick up Tomlinson, at worst he can be traded next year for another asset and if we have a top tier free agent want to join us next year. The old buy low and sell high.

Sadly, that would only work if we had Free Trade/Free Agency, whereby a Club can choose where the player goes during contract, but once out of contract, the player gets to decide where he goes. That will never happen in the AFL though, the AFLPA holds too much power and will never give it up.

Yep, and other clubs always seem more willing than us to pay more $ and offer longer contracts to get the established A graders. Also, Tomlinson is all but guaranteed, obviously Whitfield isn’t. I understand they’re on different levels but Tomlinson still fills a need, I wouldn’t want to miss out on him for a 2% chance of getting Whitfield.

Yep its all good in theory

Problem is the player choosea where they want to go.

Wouldnt thought this strategy has paid off dor clubs like ours or saints, dogs, roos.

Players choose big clubs. AFL equality is bs.

There has got to be some limit though, because clubs can defer part payment of contracts so in theory you could get anybody for a year and then what. Havew a look at some suburban/country clubs who pay big $$ for players and then when they go thewy have got nothing because the development work they put in on potential players has brenn wasted. Sorry, there is no way that Tomlinson is worth Jones, BNrayshaw/Petracca, and ANB/Hunt . N

No wonder they call this part of the year , the silly season.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
