Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Bombers Succession Planning

If true: The main question is does Worsfold want to retire at the end of next year?  Maybe but I have a feeling he thinks he still has longer in the game.  Is it being announced to stop the demands for his sacking next year?  Or will it make it worse as they have a coach in waiting already on the payroll.

Now I'm waiting for curtain posters to come here and say we should do the same with Goodwin, despite the fact that this has disaster for Essendon written all over it...

What is a curtain poster? Certainly you are mistaken, haha

They can't afford to pay out a coach for a full year, after all the payout they've had over the last few years. So if they drag it into the next season then it doesn't cost them as much and won't look as bad. Also Worsfold's wife and kids have already moved back to WA, I'm sure they might have wanted him to step away on his own and thought this might give him a little push.

Certain and Curtain are some of the few words in the English language that confuse me. I always question myself when writing them and I wasn't sure if it was right when I posted it.

Perhaps curtail your use of these words then Ash?

Clubs are finding very creative ways to sack coaches these days

you can be sacked tomorrow or agree to this BS succession plan.

ummm i guess the second option

agree but you have to admit that it's smart in that it gives something to all the stakeholders. Whether it is the right long term move is almost beside the point in this world of brand driven values.

Will be interesting to see how the media reacts to the PR spin that EFC will put on the move.

Worsfold gets a years pay for doing very little

Essendrug lessen there costs by not sacking early. They can also pay Rutten a base (Learning) salary

All good in theory, let’s hope in reality it becomes a huge mess!!!

I think it worked well at Melbourne - as in, it was a harmonious hand over from Roos to Goodwin.

It succeeded at Melbourne as it was the coach (Roos) idea and is what he pushed for.

It completely failed at Collingwood as it was imposed on the coach (Malthouse).

I don't think this is Worsfold's idea though. Seems almost similar to the Malthouse situation.

“giving something to all the shareholders “ is often a terrible way to run a footy club. it all good in ideas but can also miss  the heart of the place.  i’m so glad it’s not us fr a change setting up to be this stupid.

i’ll eat my words if it comes out that  woosha drove this, but it’s not t vibe i’m getting.

I don't think it's smart at all.  have some balls and sack the bloke if you think he is not up to it.  or offer him a mentor role.

an embarrassing year coming up for Woosha.  if he was doing well, this would not be happening.

A bit like the North Scott situation.  we are parting mutually, nothing to do with being 2-7.  if they planned this mutable separation then why are north paying 600K next year in the soft cap.  clubs don't want to be seen to be sacking coaches these days as it implies failure so they are using PR and the media and fans eat it up

I really feel like from an on field coaching and tactics situation that Goodwin in charge of the side whilst Roos oversaw him and took responsibility worked very well in 2016 - to win 10 games with that list was brilliant coaching - and set us up well for 17/18.

A lot of the failures in fitness, injury management, list management and game style had roots in that same time frame but overall I'd still give it a tick.

The problem with transitioning from one coach to another is you're more likely to either keep things in place or bend towards the new coach without a proper clean out. Which should be fine, but if you aren't well set up across your footy department you risk the situation we are in now. But that's true for keeping a long term coach and if you bring in a completely new coach you can toss out all the good with the bad.

But for the actual succession - as long as Worsfold doesn't pull a Mick Malthouse - I'd actually think it will work for Essendon short term. Long term they might end up needing a harder look at their list, their full coaching set up, their medical staff etc.

We won't know whether Melbourne's succession is successful for a couple of years. And it's taken almost 10 years for Collingwood's to bear fruit. Plus, you have to speculate whether the Pies cost themselves a flag in 2011 in their (Eddie's) desperation to keep Buckley by sidelining Malthouse.

All so  cynical you lots, what's the difference between what the dees have done, and essendon are going to do and what Carlton have done with Bolton, makes no difference if you hire a inexperienced coach or train a coach like the dees have done with  Goodwin, in terms of whether that coach succeeds or fails There is no right way or wrong way in selecting  a head coach, the reality is there are 18 clubs and most coaches will get sacked within 3 to 5 years there is only one premiership every year for 18 clubs. This is a great move for the essendrug, Ben rutten has very little experience, worsefold will be a great mentor for a young coach.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
