If it wasn't a complete substitution this makes it even stranger.

The whole episode has so much “dumbness” attached to it it’s hard to grasp.  If there was any evidence of a banned substance surely he would have been suspended earlier than this. As an alternative scenario, was there any chance he was just trying to be funny and tampering with the sample as a joke?

It seems he didn't know the rules clearly and confused (panic or ignorance) ASADA and AFL testing and what they test for depending on when they take a sample.

There were no PED's found in his subsequent and uncontaminated sample.  So, even if he had an AFL 'strike' there was no need to mess with his sample as ASADA wouldn't act or maybe not even test for illicit drugs.

Makes one wonder how clearly players understand the testing regimes of the two bodies. 

If it was one of our young stars panicked or confused at a drug test and similar happened, I would be mortified for him and us.

Still, no excuse for being so dumb as to tamper with the sample.

The thing I come back to in all of these cases is where are the player managers?! Where is their duty of care to the players who pay them?

Maybe they do this but I’d have my players run through the rules relating to this every 6 months just so they are 100% clear. As I said maybe they do something similar already but they seem miss out on being brought up in these cases.

Although he was caught in the act, the official obtaining the sample doesn’t and isn’t authorised to do anything there or then. He takes the sample and reports on his observations where an investigation is then commenced. Hence the delay.

Interesting take on 774AM this afternoon. They were asking if it was WADA or ASADA taking the sample.  Apparently WADA are strict and turn up unannounced and literally follow behind the player until the sample is produced in full view of official. Shorts to ankle, top lifted up to chest height. 774AM said ASADA sub out to Dorritich pathology and they are a bit more relaxed about it. ASADA supposedly only test for PED whereas WADA test for illicit drugs as well. They questioned on the radio if Willy had 2 strikes already and knew he had something in his system, hence the panic, attempted substitution and getting caught red handed, despite the sample coming back neg for PEDs

The WADA Prohibited List is the international standard for identifying substances and methods prohibited in sport. The List is updated annually and a substance will be considered for the List if it meets any two of the following three criteria:

1. It has the potential to enhance or enhances sport performance.

2. It represents an actual or potential health risk to the athlete.

3. It violates the spirit of sport.

Why might marijuana and cannabinoids meet this criteria?

Chronic marijuana use has also been linked to mental illness including paranoia and psychosis.[2]

Violation of the spirit of sport: Negative values and ethics included in sport, and beyond sport, are considered in this criteria. Due to the illegal nature of marijuana in most countries, the use or abuse of marijuana does not exhibit the ethics and moral judgment that upholds the spirit of sport.[1]

Sugar is bad for you too. Maybe we should start testing for that. And women, wouldn’t want the players to get distracted and hurt themselves.

Sugar won't effect your sporting performance (good or bad) for any individual game. Weed will.

Heard today that he had tried to pee for 4 hours... but no luck and decided out of frustration to poor his energy drink into the sample cup!!!  Obviously he has a super bladder, but why didn't he start drinking water after a few hours to get things moving.

Basically he's screwed.

The sad thing is, this would be funny if it weren't so serious. All the rumours that have come out in the wake of it sound like a poorly made comedy movie about a sports star. But, he knew what he was doing, and will have to face the consequences. As far as I'm concerned a big ban is in order.

Why didn't he drink the drink instead of putting it in the cup? Matthew Lloyd said last night on FC when he was 16 he had to do a sample, the testers were there at 6 and he couldn't provide a sample until 10. I guess Rioli just got impatient and frustrated. Unfortunately now the rumour mill goes into overdrive.

Not being a game-day test they were only testing for PED’s and not prohibited drugs. I think it’s pretty clear what has happened.
