Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

A Sit Down with the Coach

Glad he made a clear statement around the players and the pre season. This team wasn't anywhere near the level of fitness from the very start and thats as a group. We know a large majority of our core players had interupted pre seasons but I don't doubt that after a late finals run meant many of our younger players didn't come back at the level of fitness required.

It's not a blanket excuse for everything but it does make implementing or changing game plan/style very difficult when the bulk of players aren't fit. It was an uphill battle from the very beginning.

Looking forward indeed to a big summer. Don't know if there will be another team more under the microscope then ours.

I've watched most of it. I am really impressed by Goodwin. He has looked at the reality check in the eye and is determined to learn from it.  I am willing to bet next season will see a turn around. He also acknowledged, for those who fumed our Pre Season was irrelevant, that 2019 was more or less predicated by it.

I found this interesting from Goody.

“From a personal development perspective, that’s certainly something I’m going to be looking at in my off-season; about how I can cope with that situation better as a coach,” he said.

“I’m really clear now on a pathway forward personally, for how I’m going to attack my coaching from here on in, but I’m always really clear on the pathway forward as a club.

So much went wrong this year it almost felt that the coaches, in particular Goodwin had no idea where to start with it. Mass confusion. Hopefully they've all taken a lot from this in terms of personal responses to such problems. I really hope the footy department and coaches identify from a tactical approach, how we can really compete week in week out against the top teams. Simply winning contested ball isnt going to cut it anymore.

On another note, they really need to make sure he has the senior assistants around him and ready to help out. Richardson was a good start, but still need the likes of Yze and possibly others to really make sure we have the game plan and matchday coaching in place to take this group back to that next level. At the moment our coaching mix doesnt exactly scream "premiership" unlike for exmaple the pies with Rob Harvey, Bucks, Brenton Sanderson, Anthony Rocca and Justin Longmuir

Think the list changes and leadership changes will be intriguing when the coach is saying: “Ultimately, at the end of that, we had a group that wasn’t prepared for what the game was going to demand.”

Geez its everybody else's fault isnt it Simon?

No wonder they have cleaned out the coaching ranks.

All will be sweet in 2020.

My God what a train wreck.

Agree totally here.....Has never taken responsibility for what has transpired this season.

I might have said this: "Utimately, at the end of that, we had a coach that wasn’t prepared for what the game was going to demand.”

He clearly needs help & guidance & with Misson, McCartney, Jennings, Rawlings & Viney now gone, not sure who is going to provide that. Not sure A Richardson is the answer either......

I stand to be corrected though in time.

This neither filled me with any great confidence or made me think he isn't the right man and i guess that's where I'm at with the club, its just so meh.. at the moment. I dont know if he can get us back on track, i dont know  if the players are going to take responsibility and atone for this year, i dont know if the FD will be stacked with enough talent, i dont know of we will get our list refreshed, i dont know if we will make the right choice when it comes to the draft.

That's my mantra for this club at the moment, "I dont know"

Proof will be in the pudding.

It was a tough year for everyone involved, and I have no doubt Goody is working his backside off to help us get better over the off season.

But we also know that it means nothing unless it happens.  The only thing that interests me right now are our fitness levels - if we have a healthy list that gets things underway positively when November rolls around, then we are already making inroads into improving across the board in 2020.

Gee that ruins your narrative doesn't it. It was clearly coaching in 2018 when they changed the game style after the debacle that was the Sydney game in rd 20. As acknowledged by me and others.

Its clearly coaching in 2019. He has botched it and is trying to blame everybody else. Muppets like you haven't got a clue.

Thanks for proving me right. play again soon.

I just choose to assume that he is deeply uncomfortable in front of the camera. Otherwise, I can’t figure out how somebody so inarticulate could lead a football team to success.

Read nothing into it. I've known people the other way round -- fantastic in interviews, around the meeting table, etc -- but who turn out to be horribly ineffective at the actual business of doing their job.

Simon's not tracking too well at the "actual business of doing his job" right now, but his performance in front of cameras doesn't enter into it for me. (How many people actually are good in front of cameras?) Ultimately, the only thing that counts is on-field success.

I’m becoming increasingly frustrated with watching interviews with Simon Goodwin, and coming away with absolutely zero insight.

He seems to think the Melbourne supporters are sated by cliché and hollow corporate-speak.

You've taken that way out of context.

Firstly, the quote about being unprepared was in reference to the pre-season. Anyone who watched our first five rounds of the H&A season could see a team that was not fit enough and found it difficult to spread away from the contest. I would've thought it was as clear as day that we came into the season underdone given the number of absentees during the majority of our pre-season.

Secondly, this was not the only reason he gave for the poor season. This was just what started it off.

He also acknowledged during the interview:

1) That the pressure of expectation (being a success-starved club coming off a preliminary final) affected everyone, players and coaches included.

2) He needs to get better at detaching himself from his football life to his private life and not let the stress/pressures of footy affect his private life.

3) He noted we need to develop a game style that can be more identifiable so that supporters know what they are going to get.

That's three points alone where he has acknowledged improvement required in coaching.

So yeah, your assertion that he is blaming everyone else but himself is way off the mark.

OK. Could someone who believes that the coach should say something that isn't cliches and corporate-speak please draft the sort of speech they believe is appropriate for us all to read.  I'll be pleasantly surprised if anyone can do it.

I understood what he said in the context that it was said, however I can't wait to see who is going to represent us at all levels going into the pre-season. Fitter, Stronger & Smarter would go a long way to getting us back where we belong, so sick of being brushed aside............Go Dee's

Ffs you're not bad, go into politics

You seen the warning signs last season and everyone got caught up in the finals wins last season against a couple of older sides.

"I posted a while back" - was that before or after the Sydney game in Rd 20

"#1 3rd quarter team for the year, which shows the coaches are able to make necessary changes to counteract the opposition blah blah blah coaches can identify what needs to be done and impart the right messages and moves"

but this season because we are losing the entire coaching panel is no good.

Might have been better to keep your powder dry last season and stick with seeing how this season went

or more appropriately

Consider last years assessment as reason for not sacking him this season but weigh up all the side issues which saw us so horrible for the season as a factor to back your man, make some changes and give him 2020 to redeem himself. If it doesn't happen then you are justified in moving him on.

That's how the strong clubs do things

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
