Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

That's not why they want pick 3, they want it so they don't lose their first round picks (which they would if they got an early bid). They want a player at pick 3 and Green, otherwise they wouldn't bother trading.

Having a look, I miss read the articles regarding GWS on the AFL website.

Yes:
Daniels - excellent small forward
Sproule - if he's very cheap he's a depth key forward option

Maybe:
Langdon - I like him as a pressure forward but injuries have been a concern
Cumming - nice back flank prospect
Hately - he's solid but unspectacular, unsure of his best position, probably half back
O'Halloran - haven't seen any of him this year, thought he was a good but not great draft prospect, like him more than Hately because he's a more natural outside runner I think
Perryman - he's ok and versatile but lacks pace, skills haven't been as good at AFL level as the pre draft buzz

No:
Finlayson - think we have similar and better players in Melksham and Fritsch
Caldwell and Hill - Giants won't trade these guys, big parts of their future
Bonar - he's already what we have a surplus of - big body mids/forward without pace/fitness/skill
Briggs/Idun - young talls the Giants won't want to give up
Shipley/Buckley - fringe players

Not sure about the Finlayson part. Tough match up and hurts most teams.

I'm hearing that we may sign Tomlinson as a RFA. GWS will receive an end of first round pick as compo. GWS will then trade Picks 11, 13 and Compo pick to us for Pick 3. Can't remember where I originally heard it, but it does sound plausible.

Sounds like a juicy deal from our perspective.

Would jump at Finlayson. He had a good year, kicked 37 goals from 19 matches. He’d help fill our tall forward list gap nicely.

Would LOVE Caldwell, but they won’t let him go. IMO he’ll eventually become a gun mid, Dylan SHiel but a good kick. Has very similar attributes to Shiel, real good burst of pace, good ball winning ability, good running power, but has a much better kick on him. I’d give up a top 10 pick alone for him, let alone take him as steak knives!

Hately is ok, but more of a flanker.

Bonar is average IMO. Hasn’t come on yet and doesn’t address a direct need for us.

Ther others I wouldn’t think suit us.

If they would throw all that in then pick 3 is theirs.

If they get their hands on pick 3 it means that they will be able to take green with a second round selection as their first selection will be in before the bidders.

They are essentially (indirectly) gaining an upgrade of their second round pick to another top 5 selection by doing the deal. So yes they will pay overs for pick 3.

Tomlinson is a free agent not an RFA but otherwise your post makes sense.

The compo pick formula isn't the simplest.

The compensation formula produces a points rating for players based on:

1. The new contract of the free agent;
2. The age of the free agent.

Draft picks are allocated to clubs based on the net total points for free agents lost and gained during the transfer period.

Draft picks will be allocated to one of five places:

•  1st round
•  end of 1st round
•  2nd round
•  end of 2nd round
•  3rd round

In applying the formula, an expert committee reviews the formula outcomes. The committee has the power to recommend alternative outcomes to GM – Football Operations where the formula produces a materially anomalous result.

i like the look of bonar primarily based on his underage assessment as a player with strength in the contest and genuine breakaway pace

hately and caldwell both look 'neat' footballers

as long as one (preferably two!) of them come our way with 13 and 15 in exchange for pick 3 i'm all for the deal being done

The rules on the compo pick are quite complicated but at best it would be pick 12 or thereabouts. My feeling is that Tomlison would not trigger the salary level requirment for such a pick so it could be 29/30

Yeah second round compo IMO likely a pick in the 30s.

The person that told me may have added a bit of an exaggeration for them receiving an end of first round pick. I heard end of first round, but you may be right. The way I see it, GWS would jump at it as they would also be relieving some Cap space.

He's not a strong key forward though, he's tall but plays like a running mid sized player. Cameron and Himmelberg get the key defenders and more often than not he's released to play on a flanker or given space by an intercept player.

I think Fritsch and Melksham offer more in that 3rd tall role and if you start asking Finlayson to be something that doesn't suit his game he'd get found out.

Can I ask why? I’ve just watched his highlights package and I’m not sure what you are seeing that I am not. Not having a go. Just would be interested in seeing the highlights reel that shows him being good or worthy of packaging up with the deal

It’s hard to see sometimes.

Well, not biologically anyway.  There's only 4 months age difference between the two.  Ed's brother is of the Collingwood variety -Tom.

Yeah, I thought all 3 were. Clearly a little research shows the GWS variety is from WA, so I’m wrong. Cheers

Very little chance GWS would receive end of first round compo for Tomlinson. Be doing well to get end of second round for him.

that's not how compensation works.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

    HIBERNATING by KC from Casey

When they locked up the rooms for summer at the end of last year’s football season, the rooms gathered cobwebs, the atmosphere became dense and the place developed a sleepy feel. They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. By the time they worked out it was game on, their opponents from Box Hill had accumulated five goals and, if the game wasn’t over, it might as well have been. For a se

A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
