IMO they would have to be pretty special to use a top 5 pick on a back flanker. I think to be a successful HBF in the top 5 you have to be exceptional. Is Young “Luke Hodge” good? I don’t know.

As the NAB AFL Hyperbole period draws to a close, I have to say - I can't ever recall a top draft prospect with such prodigious kicking talent as Young. Can anyone point me to some past names with available footage? Young reminds me of some of the world's greatest ever sportsmen in his effortless control of the ball, as if its trajectory is an extension of the limb simply placing it where intended. Get him on the list and we could have the greatest tap ruckman, handballer, and kick in the history of the AFL on a single team.

He is one out of the box in that regard SK.  A very good replacement for Hibb and the timing is spot on in terms of probably being ready to launch in 2021.

It's an amusing time of the year RN - but I sincerely believe Young has an extra-natural ability in one particular facet.

We all base our draft preferences and demands on rhetoric and limited footage - to varying extents. 

I get as excited and hyped as the next guy on the potential superstar upside of Henry or Pickett or whoever. 

But while Jackson for example is touted as a speculative three-year 50-goal-come-ruck-relief-project, I think:

Why can't Young, for whatever his current flaws and present draft position, also be considered a long-term project?  

Others may disagree, but I consider Young's kicking to be well above elite standard and transferable to AFL level. 

You take that sort of weapon, and then work out how best to deploy it in your system,  regardless of position. IMO.

So latest rumour reported in the Sun we won't bid on Green to take Jackson, because GWS won't match the bid and we will be stuck with Green and GWS will take Jackson with 4.  Something is a little smelly at the moment, if we hand GWS Green and Young we have to be to most stupid club every, which really is our drafting history

We dont hand Giants anything.  We make a choice, then they respond. Our decisions need to be based around us winning a flag.  GWS have put themselves in a great position (with massive kick along from AFL and academies), but we have to focus on us, not get distracted with this stuff.

It is all nasty froth and bubbles and the moment.  Lets see how it drops, but the recruiters (I assume) are thinking about MFC, making us the best that we can be.  At the moment they are only kids with talent, but we are led to believe that they are all somehow ‘superstars’ that will impact games from day 1 (Toumpas anyone, or is it still too soon?).

Its a fun time for the couch experts, but (player X) is not the messiah, he is just a naughty boy...

I don't watch much of the under age stuff, so have only seen highlights so not the most qualified to offer this up, but Toumpas was rated a phenomenal kick in his draft year, however as we all know with the extra speed and pressure the AFL brings as compared to under 18s, he was found out.

I think a few years ago there were stats going around that the best players from the 18s come through with a high % of their stats being contested - not sure how this applies to Young? Most of the best half back flankers have evolved from their draft year, playing mostly as midfielders who then find that position when at AFL level - Hodge was mentioned earlier but he was a mid, then from last years premiership team Vlaustin was hard in and under mid and that's where Houli started too, in our team Salem was a mid turned HBF while Hibberd got a chance as a mature pick up. 

Not at all saying Young's not a worthwhile pick but he needs to be more than a great kick to make it at AFL level, the speed pressure etc. is so much higher than what he's been playing against. Have people seen that in him, or just the great kick?

I hope we pick up this kid at 3 and not Jackson. If they pick up Jackson they are telling me Weid hasn't worked out we need another key forward. GIVE HIM A CHANCE! We need good kicks and Young is one of those. Must take IMO.

As a couch expert we don't have many players on our list that can kick, todays game is keeping the football, we can't kick so can't keep the football, therefor game plan falls over.  There is no such thing as a messiah in Football, you need a team playing a team game, we need players whether this is Young or not, who can first win the football and second have the disposal skills to keep it.

We compete against 17 teams (18 if you include our traditional rivals - ourselves). It would be utter madness to give up the player we want just to stick it to one of those teams. Green may well end up the better player than Jackson, but if our recruiters rate Jackson higher, we pick him every day of the week.

Although to be fair, given our proud tradition of stuffing up top draft picks we should probably decide who we want, then pick the alternative.

He projects closer to Elliott Yeoh with leadership like Luke Hodge. He's got attributes to become a gun midfielder or half back flanker.

He's got elite agility, decent speed, elite kicking, elite handballing, elite decision making, elite intercept marking, aggressive at the body. The knock on him is he can be too accountable and try to body up too much. He'll have to learn to play slightly less aggressive at the man at AFL level or he might get suspended or lose wrestling matches against bigger bigger forwards.

I had the privilege of a pre-draft meet with the club some years back and we looked at Rohan Bail's QAFL highlights ahead of drafting him. It was a long reel and he continually hit targets or kicked long to advantage like he was Nathan Buckley incarnate.  Fast forward to AFL pressure ...

and if we take Green and our chances at pick 8 or teen picks then everyone will scream we just added to our inside bull strength and not addressed weaknesses.

Agree 100%. Our ball delivery and foot skills were and are horrible.  Young would be perfect. He gets the footy.  He uses the footy.  Why pass on him? Jackson is speculative and not what we want or need.
