Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Welcome to Demonland - Alan Richardson

I have no real idea whether this is good bad or otherwise presently. I think he does have the runs on the board in certain aspects and whoever suggested we filter his time at the Aints with an understanding of what a basketcase they were shows merit.

To tell the truth it asks more questions than it provides answers. The "official" line tells us diddly other than he's joining Melbourne.

Doesnt take a Soothsayer to know there is still much to play out. My mail box is getting some interesting feed..unfortunately some contradictory ( but then maybe only in light of what I know...not what we dont yet )

The idea that he's here to provide an ear to Goody doesnt hold much for me as wasnt that exactly what  Macca was ... That worked swimmingly.

Personally I'll be happy if the FD looks nothing like it did this year ( with few exceptions ) . It was dysfunctional and splintered.

Happy enough to have Richo come on board. We wont know how successful this is for a while. Still curious what else is to happen.

Good something has...more needed

Good luck Alan, welcome to Hell

There's certainly more going on at the club than we supporters are privy to.

There are two ways to look at Richo's appointment.

One. The "hierarchy" sees Goody as simply needing help in what is a very complex job.

Two. The "hierarchy" has lost confidence in Goody.

If Goodwin could see Ratten coming to the MFC, he'd shake in his boots about his own role, his widespread credibility and record. So, Goody put his finger in the pie and has thus seen and enabled an early firming-up of another (Richardson) whose pedigree is sure to be considered lower than his own at the present moment. Something 'Putinesque' about that strategy, don't you think? Just a thought....

You are a lunatic

Our coaching panel has let this club down dramatically. Unable to get the message across to the players and elicit the right responses.

Think Richo will be a more than useful cog in the the coaching panel to turn this team about. Think that t he was a bit unlucky at the Saints with their trials and tribulations.

Also believe that there should be more changes to this coaching panel and would like to see most of them moved on with possibly the exception of Rawlings.

Goodwin's worth will be tested next year working with new coaching influences and ideas. Will be interesting to see the  response.

So welcome to the Dees Richo and good luck

Seriously - some of the posters here should just support another club.

Sure - it’s been a schizen season. There are reasons for this - some unfortunate, some probably due to our own incompetence.

But to bag out this signing is red hot. Like Burgess, Richardson absolutely had options with several other AFL clubs, and he chose us.

Plainly this is a good sign. There’s NO way he would’ve committed to us if he thought we were a basket case - I mean, why would he?!

Despite some of the criticism here of him as a failed senior coach, the reality is - he’s a super experienced AFL man and he knows the lay of the land.

That he chose us is on any construction a great sign for the future, and IMO an endorsement for the way we are run and our potential for success next year and beyond.

Ron if the club made a better decision regarding Goodwin then this wouldn't be necessary. I really don't trust this club to get anything right. What if Goodwin really is the problem and pisses Richo off like he did McCartny for trying to tell Goodwin the truth about certain players and a stinking  game plan that nobody wants to play.

Welcome  Richo mate just watch your back.

I'm more excited by Burgess coming on board but at least Richardson is experienced, although he is largely a replacement for McCartney.

Chaplin, Rooke, Mathews, Plapp, Egan...and Goodwin... have little experience or had little when they joined.

And with Rawlings spending most of the year at Casey - we didn't have much 'pedigree' guiding the players.

Given your quirky sense of humour, I'm guessing that is in that vein.

Just in case it is a serious idea, 'no' to co-coaches.  My experience is two people can't effectively 'job-share' unless it is highly structured.  Coaching isn't in that category.

I'll clarify my comment in the post you quoted.  Richo seems a genuine guy and given his background he would be great as development coach or as a senior assistant responsible for xxx.

My negative comments are when it is suggested he be Goodwin's mentor or some hybrid mentor/senior assistant role ala Macca's first job at the club.

Firstly, I doubt he has the right experience for the mentor role or to help Goodwin avoid 'rookie' pitfalls ala those made during our off-season and pre-season which Goodwin and Lewis have acknowledged.

Secondly, the hybrid mentor/senior assistant role is an almost impossible role to make work:  It means a senior assistant reports to the senior coach who gives advice, counsel to and holds him accountable.  Whereas a mentor provides those things to the senior coach and holds.  So with the hybrid, who really reports to who?  What happens when they disagree.  Who has the ultimate say?   With Macca his hybrid role gradually changed where he no longer formally held the mentor role and became part of the coaching panel.

Macca did a great job in the hybrid role for several years but in the end it broke down.  A poster here I highly respect @Mach5and seems to have some insight into what happens at the club, posted in the McCartney thread: "It is about philosophical differences.  Goodwin knows what he wants from McCartney; McCartney thinks there’s a difference between what he wants and what he needs."

At the end of the day reporting lines and authority need to be really clear to the incumbents and the people who deal with them.  Hybrid roles with blurred reporting lines don't fit that.

But would like to wait and see what role Richo is actually given.

Sometimes we make changes to our list or coaching staff that we like or hate and in this case IMO is a good get for us. Richo will help rejuvenate the list and will be a good support for Goody.

That is only one small part of the puzzle the other is to Draft wisely a couple of seasoned boys and a good number 2  pick might land us a ready made recruit. We  are on the right track.

When l heard that A Richardson was joining us It was a kick in the guts for the Kangas who tried hard to sign him and a win for us in the end. Hopefully we can kick them in the guts a second time in as many days.

Good guys don't always run last.  He has made my  day.

What about those that run second last? What are they? Moderately fine guys with an interrupted pre-season?

A mentor is not a person (coach) of a similar age and standing in a profession. He will not have a desire on the job of the person he is mentoring. He will not be looked on as a replacement for the person he is mentoring if the mentor does not perform his task. He will not sit beside the person he is mentoring while doing his job rather offer advice on performance when required.  He will not confuse the group as to who is the best/real coach or have potential to cause division within the playing group.

Who said any thing about going under. Sounds a bit dramatic. Maybe you like the drama of others stating opinions. Then again like a lot of veteran posters here maybe you just take offence to anyone new saying anything.

Nope - quite the opposite. This is essentially a discussion forum in relation to one of my life passions, the Melbourne Demons.

In this context, I enjoy and respect contrary opinions - I just find it annoying when certain posters quite uncritically just throw rocks at the club and certain individuals within the organisation.

Marry it up with some cogent analysis, and I’ll respect that - even if I ultimately disagree with the underlying opinion/perspective.

My thoughts on the Alan Richardson appointment is more about how he is perceived by a playing group 30-35 years younger than him. The aura of Roos, Clarkson etc is runs on the board/premierships from a coaching perspective, I am dubious he will be fully respected, irrespective of his knowledge, lived experience and nice blokeness.

I am struggling with the. "quite uncritically just throw rocks bit. What do you mean by quite uncritically throw rocks?  Assuming you mean criticize the club and employees of the club. Are you saying a Club, made up of members and supporters are not allowed to criticize a failed organisation and one that has been a failure for 55 years.

I seem to recall Alan Richardson always being a very well respected player at Collingwood, due to the way he went about things.  Leigh Mathews was full of praise for him in his autobiography, which I would have thought is a pretty good sign of the quality of the guy from a football perspective.  I'd also love to prise Voss out of Port as I agree with someone here who thought that he'd be great for our group of young mids in particular.

St Kilda were usually a very good tackling team under Richo and I hope he can help get our team back up there in this respect.  I noticed in the Swans game in particular, that we allow our opposition to break tackles far too easily on the whole at the moment.

I remember him newrly being killed by Vossy at the Gabba. One of my fav hits of all time, not that that is condoned in the current climate.

I havnt read this whole thread but am I the only one not excited by this appointment? Richo had a win percentage of around 33% when he was coach at St Kilda and highest finish as an assistant coach in 10 years is 5th.

He was out of the job so we didn’t even need him to leave another club to join us, he was looking for work. The way some people are going on here you would think we just re-signed Roos or secured Hardwick or Clarko.

I think many on here are happy that we are still seen as a somewhat attractive workplace despite the [censored] on-field performance this year. Richardson would have all the info he needed to make his decision, and if we are as bad off field as it might have looked, im sure he would have been smart enough to take a gig at a different club.

His experience cant possibly make us worse.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo
