Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

The telling part of the article was the emphasis on the importance to present at the preseason fit, ready (and hopefully injury free) and willing to put in the hard yards.  "This is the time to put the work in your break."

Did they rest on their laurels a tad too much and use injuries as an excuse (in their minds) to cruise into the year, believing it was going to happen again for them (making finals) and then to top it all off they were over praised by everyone to be the next big thing before the season had even started?

Injuries, surgeries, poor preseason, coupled with high expectations, soon turned into a reality check when the wins didn't come.

Perfect storm for a bad year. 17th position. ?

The point that Carey makes is clear. But to not upset the Demonland censors by quoting large chunks of the Age article, I have exchanged a number of words for suitable alternatives. You can find the key below:

Confidence  – cajones
Pre-season – preparation
Injury/off – owies/underdone
Football/footy – this brutal death sport
Season/year – grueling sprint to the finals
Slow or indecisive – like Angus Brayshaw in a manipulated media clip

"Cajones in this brutal death sport are often spoken about and come in many forms. In my experience, an owies-free preparation can be one of the biggest factors in building the cajones early in the grueling sprint to the finals."

"A strong preparation is the foundation for everything you try to build throughout the grueling sprint to the finals proper. If you don't have the belief that you've done the required work, doubts can quickly snowball and start affecting different parts of your game."

"Given how highly structured this modern brutal death sport is, it only takes one or two guys to be a little bit underdone for entire game-plans to break down. If one player is out of position, it can make several others look like Angus Brayshaw in a manipulated media clip. One break in the chain, and it can be detrimental to a team's overall cajones."

A coach with no Premiership success means a coach who has not coached to a premiership

But you knew that in the first place and just wanted to argue. Maybe its the full moon.

Only five of the 18 current coaches have had 'Premiership success'. Not even a third.

The other 13 must be duds.

If you followed the thread you would see i was not referring to the coach in isolation. But you knew that and just wanted to have a crack. What is it with people on this site with grammar or taking one part of a discussion and arguing that point at the exclusion of the whole argument. Anyway, yours goes in the bin.

Apologies this is slightly unrelated.

I've always thought Duck is a good nickname for a guy with anger management issues. He's calm on the surface especially in media appearances but below he is a violent maniac. Allegedly smashed a glass in his girlfriends face and has had multiple run ins with violence and the law, not to mention the drama around him at Nth Melbourne. Seems to be a forgotten piece of information.

How this guy has been allowed to resurface and become a prominent figure on national TV and radio really baffles me. Have to chalk it up to Australian standards and the amount that so called 'Legends of the game' and men in general get away with.

Maybe we'll see Cousins riding the boundary for channel 7 in the near future.

Sorry sorry, I don't follow.

Even in isolation am I not right to presume that your comment Goodwin is not a premiership coach is a critique of his ability?

If not, why bother with the qualifier.

It would have been more logical and persuasive to say he is a 'relatively inexperienced AFL coach'.

He's a serial apologist for the coaching staff who wouldn't know a defender from his toenail. The bin is the right place.

I guess the thing is here you never know who are paid employees or affiliates of the Club. Next year when the majority of the assistants and Jennings are gone and we play a different style they will argue it down to Goody.

With that well reasoned perspective you could be captain of the henny penny collective - whose contributions to this thread i eagerly await.

You would then be Captain spalding (most oldies on this site who were out and about in Melbourne pubs in the 80s and 90s will get this reference)

What is wrong with people.

Gary Lyon says something negative about the club and it's "Gary has limited knowledge and employed Mark Neeld, what would he know?".

Wayne Carey writes a feel good article and the happy go luckies start can't contain their excitement.

I guess it's optimism v pessimism. Don't worry there are plenty on here who backed Gary's comments.

The difference between those two critiques was that Lyon was all hurt feelings and demonland henny penny emotional and Carey (or his ghost writer) actually made some effort to back his comments up with some logical arguments.

I get that but even if one is an optimist, a well reasoned person can still share some of Gary's concerns.

It's not that one is right and the other is wrong.

Well I try to stay optimistic, but I certainly have plenty of concerns.

What are you talking about?

If we play a different style next season of course it will be down to Goody. It is is his call as senior coach.

And just in case you haven't noticed we HAVE BEEN playing a different style since the bye. Quite radically different in fact. And that is also down to Goody.

Same could be said for every Club however other Clubs have blueprints for success. We have no road map. next year we will likely have no players with premiership success and a coach with no Premiership success.

Well by your own definition the last 3 flag teams have had ZERO previous flag coaches and ZERO previous flag players so we'll be in good company.

Accurate user name though.

Wow, the despicable adulterer of a teammate says we’ll be alright and challenging for the 8 after a good pre season and on the back of a soft draw for being absolutely insipid this year.

Maybe now that he has actually seen a Dees game by virtue of Friday night football he might want to add a multitude of additional steps to a rebuilding plan which should include a major overhaul of the Coaching staff, Recruiting staff & Playing list to restructure what is clearly the most unbalanced Playing in the AFL.

Many of us on here have been screaming for outside midfielders and fast, high pressure forwards for years, yet the bozos continued to recruit KPP’s & slow inside mids.

To think our equivalent of Richmond’s small forwards eg Rioli, Lambert, Castagna, Baker, Bolton, Stack, are Garlett, Spargo & Chandler.

And let’s not compare their outside mids to ours as it gets even more depressing.

FCS, leave me out of Wayne Carey.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

    HIBERNATING by KC from Casey

When they locked up the rooms for summer at the end of last year’s football season, the rooms gathered cobwebs, the atmosphere became dense and the place developed a sleepy feel. They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. By the time they worked out it was game on, their opponents from Box Hill had accumulated five goals and, if the game wasn’t over, it might as well have been. For a se

A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
