Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Gil got his wish.

https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-08-27/star-giant-rejects-bigmoney-offers-to-sign-massive-sevenyear-deal

Carlton and Hawthorn now to have a crack at Langdon, Amon and Papley, players MFC should/are also targeting.

Burgoyne will take 3 years at GCS in a Hodge/Mitchell like role.

Gil got his wish cause he influenced the decision. I am sure there is another $4m undeclared on the AFL books.

coniglio's marketing money contract is sure to be separate to his playing contract

well done afl - handing out extra picks to gc17 because their salary cap management is so bad that they had to ditch jarryd lyons, who is a gun for the bears, and now making sure that gw$ stay competitive by keeping the likes of kelly and coniglio with some, shall we say, 'interesting' deals

I'm really pleased he decided to stay. Great get for gws, particularly given they also secured kelly. Good for football.

The game needs gws and gc to work. Players staying put is key to that.

I'm not averse to gc getting pick 2 as a priority pick . But only if there are other measures put in place that support player retention and buildinf a cohesive culture (investment in facilities, support for good fitness team, greater access to QLD teams, cola, support for grass roots footy in region, resolving issues that make it hard for fans to get to the ground etc etc). Otherwise it's just throwing good money after bad.

EAD Hawthorn - the salt coming from their supporters could flavour hot chips for the next 5 years. Fair bit from Carlton fans too.

feel free to post their salty tears and comments. would be a joy. Hawks supporters thought they had him in the bag. just get a star mid each year they don't have to develop and away you go.

Couldn't agree more, mate.  I always like seeing players stick with their clubs for the long term.

The fact that it means Carlton and Hawthorn miss out is the cherry on the top.

Quite likely.

We have to understand, which is hard to accept, that we don't play in a sporting competition, we play in a business of football.

As we all know, nearly anything goes in business, as long as the profits are there and keep growing.

I wouldn't even put it past the AFL to disqualify us from a GF,  if it meant GC or GWS could take our place.

The GC Sins have proved a failure. The Gold Coast has proven a graveyard for basketball, soccer and If my memory serves, even a Rugby team failed.

As you say, the AFL is more about business than anything else, so one cannot but wonder how long a failed venture can continue to be propped up.

As long as Gil is in charge sadly.

And most likely beyond od. They are in so far they can only pull the plug and admit failure or continue to tip in coin until the Sins succeed consistently.

Whenever that may be!!!

All of the Commissioners and CEO’s who voted for this still born carcass that is the Gold Coast $un$ will have to have moved on before anything will happen. None of them will admit defeat.

The Broadcast rights are actually too high. The quality of the broadcasts has been compromised to line the AFL pockets quietly. ( That includes Club Handouts)

The Gold Coast will be with us for at least 5-10 years

Correct, Gold Coast have a failed Rugby League team that even had King Wally Lewis playing for them. The team had 4 name changes and nothing brought the fans in for the long haul.

Clive Palmer had the soccer team and he only opened 1/3 of a stadium during a game to keep staff numbers down. Team was making a profit but FFA kicked them out as it didn't look good seeing so many empty seats.

Yes, but he's also the multicultural 'ambassador' for the AFL, he'd get heaps of other marketing work and he gets extra payments for finals games (which one would think GWS will play more than Carlton).

I'm all for him staying, particularly screwing over Blues and Hawks, but let's not be naive enough to think for a moment he won't make the same coin overall in the next 7 years.

How about the AFL disclose all player payments outside of their club contract? Or is that too transparent to expect?....

GCFC is but one component of a successful business model. Advertisers and TV  put up their money based on the exposure generated by having games in all states and territories.  The current model where some sides make money and others lose money works because of the big picture and redistribution. Not all business units need to make money if the overall business is sound.

The problem with Gold Coast is that they need more and different help. Not more draft picks. One or two free agents outside the salary cap for a start. A real cost on free agents leaving bottom clubs. Players leaving bottom 4 clubs for top 4 sides to have a salary cap penalty to the top 4 clubs. (Or top 8 sides can only get 1 free agent every 5 years)

I am glad the Coniglio is staying put, I am glad if the AFL has helped.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
