Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I find this the most interesting part of the story...

"Josh Mahoney is conducting a review, sources linked to Melbourne confident the highly regarded football manager is sufficiently independent to identify the issues and make tough decisions."

How can he be sufficiently independent, he runs the department he's reviewing?

What if he's the issue?

Anyway, I sure hope we get this right...couldn't stand another season of irrelevance finishing early again.

You push your opinions very strongly but they are still just opinions.  Calling those that have a different opinion to yours the 'henny penny collective' is disrespectful.

There is some intelligent posting from insightful posters on here and there is no need to be speak of them pejoratively.

Agree. My opinions are just that. Opinions.

I didn't say those that have a different opinion to mine as part of the henny  penny collective. Plenty of posters whose opinions I disagree with are not part of that collective.

Totally agree there are some intelligent and insightful posters.

As insults go the henny penny collective is pretty lightweight. But anyone can join it.

The changes are excellent and needed .The club also needs to reassess to some degree and taking nothing for granted.

Having said that, no amount of change will insulate any team from failure given the horrendous pre season and subsequent multiple number and long term injuries that have occurred throughout. To think a any coaching staff etc  will make a difference should this repeat is delusional.

For better or for worse followed this club for over 50 years and I can't recall a,season this injury ravaged. It would be foolhardy to think this was the only reason for failure, however, far and away the the main factor. For some to 'blame' injuries at all for some folk is unpalatable, weak and unacceptable. That mentality leaves me gobsmacked. One of Ron Barassi's favouite line was "We are offering reasons not excuses".

Maybe he is just cold in his decision making, not letting camaraderie cloud his judgement. Either way, changes are definitely needed that's for sure. We won't find out until mid next year if these changes will be goof or bad, but they have to happen.

I'd rather go backwards or stay where we are from change, as opposed to going backwards or stagnant from no changes.

Im no fan of Kennett, but his philosophy of surrounding him and his team with the best people available is something we should be doing.

Fitness side seems to have made great strides with Burgess, now we need the coaching and skills side.

Someone like Roughy from Hawks. Wealth of experience. 4 premierships. Leadership. Knows his craft. Etc etc.

Would be perfect to bring in.

Why are we, as a club, so resistant to an external review? Is Pert worried about saving face? We're 17th on the ladder after the no.1 AFL statistics company ranked our list the best in the AFL. External reviews should be welcome as we clearly need some assistance.

Find it amazing earlier in the season many here and in media were questioning the competence of the Melbourne coaching staff and we were told all was ok, we have the right coaching team, the metrics are trending positively yah yah yah>

No review necessary  etc etc.

Now all of a sudden we are having external  review  overseen  by Mahoney and we are jettisoning coaches like no toomorrow.

Has the football club finally woken up from their slumber?

The whole year has been about spin and I for one am tired of it.

We can handle the truth!!!

Spin at full speed. But in one way it’s good.

They have nowhere to hide now.

I’m sure the club was praying for improvement, that it didn’t happen at all, shows how serious this whole horror show is. Goodwin is a lucky man. There is no way he would have survived this, unless he had signed that extension last Summer

We keep hearing that the AFL Coach is really a Manager of people and the public face of the FD.

He has fitness people, medical people, recruiting people, list management people and assistant coaches, working with him to achieve the optimum result for his club.

The tactics seem to come from others, be it the Assistant Coaches, the Tactical Coach or group think.

Even if a side is losing, the Coach could be going ok, but at the same time his assistants might not be.

Therefore, it is fully understandable, that a club could be happy with its Coach, but be unhappy with his Assistants and require changes in that group.

Who do you get to do an external review?

There's not many qualified experienced football people around. A former football director Jason Dunstall, maybe? Former coaches?

If the club are happy with Mahoney's work over a period of time then you trust him - along with guidance from the CEO and Board and input from the other leaders of the footy department - to make the changes as required.

An external review would probably only find the same problems that we can all see. Then it may or may not propose a solution of sacking Mahoney or Goodwin, both of which seem unlikely. So skip that step and get on with Mahoney and Goodwin getting in people they think will help.

Mate these people were hand picked byGoodwin and Mahoney

We have trusted them and they have failed in all ways possible.

I am not sure the best assistants and staff in the world would be able to help Goodwin. He is too stubborn and obviously out of his depth

He is dead man walking in my view.Too difficult to come back from where he has put himself and the club.

Put him and the supporters out of their collective misery. Nothing can really change between now and midseason 2020.

Actually internal reviews have many benefits. For one the recommendations are likely to fall in line with the environment's values and goals. An external review can be highly beneficial and come back with useful recommendations but it can also come back as being far too left of centre or completely out of line with those values. Ideally you want someone close to home that knows the environment and people involved. Mahoney are co. are literally paid to do this stuff.

Call me a cynic  Praha. Though I thoroughly understand the premise of an internal review the one essential problem to that is the reviewer himself will effectively escape the torch. In the context of everything that has happened over the last 7-8 years he is quite possibly the last person that ought to as his footprints are all over this sodden mess.

Also...quite possibly that set of environmental values and goals are themselves flawed. Adjudicating by their metric might give a false positive, as it were.

Personally I'd feel much better about a truly impartial externally driven approach

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
