Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

The Lever Trade

Two first round picks was ridiculous. You pay that for a top 25 player in the comp. Maybe. It’s debatable that Lever is even in the top 75. And he’s injury prone. This trade has cost us the opportunity to bring in a young gun like a Duursma or an Ollie Florent. Who’s making these decisions? Mahoney and Goodwin? It’s disgraceful.

I think it'll work out

I'm a huge fan of Lever and like so many of our underdone players in 2019, looking forward to a terrific 2020 from him

Watch Goodwin trade away pick 2 for unders in an attempt to save his career. Brad Hill will give Goodwin a much better chance at retaining his job then Anderson or Young will in the short term.

Don't know much about the potential draftees, but Brad Hill would be a good pick up...yes? No?

Nah.

Clearly supporters have nfi of the impact a comeback from an ACL has on a player.

Lever has now had two.

Do you really think the club thought he'd do a second one on the other knee when trading for him?

His intercept marking and killing of the contest are absolutely elite. Something that Oscar and Frost are questionable at.

Yeh, he can clean up his skills but he is a gem and will prove his worth throughout the next 2-5 years.

When the trade went through, Lever had just played off in a Grand Final and made the 2017 All Australian squad.  He was one of the top young players in the league.

Lever, 2017 Pick 37 and 2018 3rd round.

FOR

Pick 10, 2018 1st and 2018 4th round.

Which seems to have worked out to be:

Jake Lever

Pick 37 2017: Harrison Petty (Melbourne)

Pick 47 2018: Matthew Parker (StKilda)

FOR

Pick 10 2017: Lochie O'Brien (Carlton)

Pick19 2018: Liam Stocker (Carlton)

Pick 67 2018: Robbie Young (StKilda)

Doesn't look too bad to me...

Notwithstanding further injury problems, this trade will be a huge win for the Demons.  Lever was a star in 2017, and was playing into some good form last year before injury.  He is one of the more courageous aerial players in the league and a decent preseason will set him up for a great 2020.

I don't like his one on one efforts nor am I a fan of his kicking under pressure. It scares me that there's times when he's Oscar McDonald one on one as a defender and Frost with the ball.

But.........

Watch him play and you'll also see:
- He comes over the top and spoils definitively as a third man and bravely
- He peels off and intercept marks
- He can handball on both sides of his body accurately and quickly
- He gives good encouragement to team mates
- He makes space, shepherds and runs to receive like a good player

The best backline interceptors - McGovern, Harris Andrews, Sicily can all take an opponent and defend them to a level Lever can't now but he could still improve in that way. Otherwise though there's no reason Lever can't get back to the best of his games when the rest of the side does their jobs too. There were some good signs against the Eagles and Saints. Foolish to make too much of a judgement right now.

The point of the thread isn’t that Lever isn’t a good player. He’s more than decent and was worth pick 10 - 20. But we shelled out much more than that, another first round pick when we didn’t have to. He was out of contract. Why are we so weak at trades and get bent over more often than not? Mahoney sold off part of the farm when he didn’t have to. Bad management.

Really?  I get that people are upset with how we have gone this year, but dragging the Lever trade out again?  Goodness, find something else!

I think we made an absolutely perfect set of decisions bringing May and Lever to the club.  With a top flight full back and a great intercept defender, we will have the makings of an excellent defense.  This will be a cornerstone of what we need to go all the way.  To trade in young players and only have frost and Omac back there, and JWags (we had not drafted Hore at this stage), it was an obvious weakness.  Find the best available and get them - and that is what we did.

This year was a blowout.  ACL and then recovery means we have not seen his best, but it is there.  Put him in a side where he doesnt have to be 1:1 key defender and the freedom will change him up again.

The trade is DONE.  Move on, would you, already?

No. We have to pay overs until the club starts winning regularly.

That is our fault yes, but also a Market Reality.

We are not yet a First Choice Club, we have to offer extra incentives.

The same will happen this Summer.

Getting Darren Burgess on board will help the situation going forward

That’s if we drafted those players. Was plenty of other available players such as Tim Kelly, Liam Ryan, Petrucelli ect available in the draft when these selections were made.

I reckon I've worked it out.

1.  Gary Busey played Buddy Holly in a movie.

2.  Buddy Holly used to slick his hair back with oil.

3.  This left an oilslick

4.  Oilslick and olisik ... not too far apart are they?

He’s not long come back from an ACL, can we at least let him have a pre-season and string some more games together. I understand being outraged on the internet is the in-thing these days but let’s hold off until mid-way through next season.

Ridiculous suggestion, that doesn't even fit the narrative that Goodwin is stubborn and cannot coach.

Good call Olisik. Paying an unnecessary extra first rounder for Lever means we have a guy like ANB or JKH in the side instead of a Liam Ryan or Conor Rozee type. No wonder we’re crap.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

    HIBERNATING by KC from Casey

They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. By the time they worked out it was game on, their opponents from Box Hill had accumulated five goals and, if the game wasn’t over, it might as well have been. For a se

A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
