Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

The calumny of the AFL's priority pick policy

Wow now that is one hell of an assistance package to get the Suns off the ground.

It will be really interesting to see what happens if they are still a rabble in 2-3 years time, surely they get relocated then.

Only Gil and all of Gold Coasts 5 supporters would be happy with this. In all seriousness, what does giving Gold coast this enormous leg up do except further f up the rest of support within the competition. With Brisbane now succeeding there is only 1 team in Queensland who anyone would want to support in a state that couldnt give less of a toss about AFL. Cannot believe more of this years bottom clubs didnt kick up a bigger stink about this, seems ridiculous

Was at peace with them receiving an extra pick at the pointy end but a little surprised at some of the other concessions.

The least the AFL can do is give us some additional dollarydoos

The spin is hilarious. "A priority pick plus a few extra picks later in the draft."

Call a spade a spade. It's FOUR priority picks over 3 drafts, PLUS insanely generous concessions regarding their Academy players AND an expanded zone to recruit from (stolen from us, of course). This allows them to use their last picks in any draft to select potential Academy guns, because no other team can bid on them.

Just ONE of these concessions would be considered overly generous for a struggling Melbourne-based club, but the AFL gift-wraps the whole lot to one of their precious expansion clubs that nobody will ever care about. A farce of the highest order.

1,2,10,21?

All these kid to feed back into  Hawks, Pies and Tigers over the next 8 years.

If he’s a RFA then depending on what the Blues pay him they’d probably get around the second round mark I’d say. On another note though, free agency compensation could mean our now pick 22 could get further bumped down to around 24-25

Indefensibley wrong by the AFL! Take out the last 40 seconds of our round 8 match and we finish equal last. Incredible assistance that just keeps on going year after year. More players, more high level picks, no cost 'Academy' kids. Our great work in the NT being diluted. Yes, give them a hand but all this overkill in the extreme. I'm guessing we'll just roll over and accept it as a club like always.

it gets better / worse:

The Suns will also receive expanded academy player access for 3 years including:
• Provision of the Darwin region as an academy zone.
• Ability to pre-sign Gold Coast SUNS academy players (including those from Darwin) without bidding.
• Increased rookie list, up to 10 players

the big one there is the ability to sign academy players without bidding

While I'm not as fussed about them getting the priority picks. My main issue is the academy concessions. Hypothetically, what happens if in 2 years time they're in finals and a player from Darwin is touted to go Pick 1? What will the AFL do then?

Also, the fact that the AFL have said that they can take away the concessions whenever they chose, then what's to say Gold Coast trade out that future pick to 1 up themselves? Kind of shafts their ability to do what they like with the pick if the AFL can just remove it.

Was Darwin our zone? If so we go to all the trouble of having home games there and now we are cut out.

Believe we have Alice Springs not Darwin. Think that zone belongs to either Hawks or Dons.

EDIT: Darwin part of our shared zone with a few other clubs - somewhat shafted I guess

Honestly who gives a [censored]. It sucks not being able to get Noah Anderson sure but how many times have we stuffed our picks up anyway.... . Also look at Richmond they didn' build there success around high draft picks they actually fluffed em like us.

But our problems lie elsewhere. And will not be answered in the draft.

Build a strong club and stop relying on draft picks! This is also gold Coasts' issue

They did ok with Martin, Cotchin and Rance. Topped them up with some former GC high picks in Lynch, Prestia and Caddy.

And 15 tied to Brisbane's finish.  Carlton have pick #9.

So 1,2, 9, 15 and 21.

Gold Coast had snookered themselves by trading out 2019 picks last year and had nothing between pick #15 and #56.  They have a nice top of the draft package now!

It either goes 2 ways for the suns:
1. They squander this and ruin the careers of 4 footballers for no reason
2. It works out and they become a super team comparable to GWS and the AFL have both of their darlings in the top 4 for years to come.

3. They squander this and ruin the careers of 4 footballers for no reason, then the AFL gift them even more picks and they become a super team comparable to GWS and the AFL have both of their darlings in the top 4 for years to come.

Darwin was never our zone. Our zone in the NT was always from Alice Springs to the Southern Border.

Darwin has never been zoned. I thought it was weird at the time that Darwin wasn't zoned, but I now believe it was for this exact purpose.

Is it weird that I get great joy in listening to Melbourne supporters blame the AFL and Gill which is really only disguised as deep-seated anger and disappointment in their own club's complete mismanagement and incompetence over the past decade and then some.

I'll always be a Melbourne supporter and love the club.

I'll also always be the first to say that we've got nobody but ourselves to blame for where we are now.

Yes, it’s been quietly astonishing to notice certain supporters go from “fist in the air” to “cap in hand” within the space of a year. Most undignified.

Yes, but if you use the thought process how could you justify Gold Coast getting what they've got? Do they have someone other than themselves to blame?

It's great to try and take the high ground but there is no logic involved in this instance.

It's a bit both ways in reality 'steve'...

Unfortunately if we are ever to win another flag, which I'm feeling is becoming less and less likely then we are going to need AFL assistance.

We are the AFL's poor cousin...no home, average training facilities, declining (ageing) supporter base.

The big clubs all now primed...we have been in a very slow death spiral for decades.

Things look pretty grim.

I think I might have to quit.

For the first time ever I walked away from watching the GF on Saturday just after half time.

I've turned off Friday night football more often than watched this season and I can't be bothered going to games anymore.

Footy's $250m disaster club (Gold Coast) has been handed an extraordinary three-year national draft rescue package.

The Gold Coast Suns will have picks No.1 and 2 in November's draft, as well as the first pick in the second round, currently pick No.20.

In next year's draft, they'll get a mid-first-round pick, currently pick 11 and in 2021 they will get the first pick in the second round, currently 19

The move hands the two best prospects in the country, young guns Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson, to the Suns on a platter.

It means at least three more years of compromised drafts to assist the battling expansion club.

actually come to think of it, every expansion club coming in since 1859 has screwed us

Didn’t work well for us but it was great timing for a strong team like Hawthorn.

2019: 1,2, 15 and 21. (and possibly #9 if they trade it to Carlton for Martin.

2020:

  • Their natural 1st pick.  Probably #1 to #3.
  • Their mid round priority pick #11.
  • And whatever top 5 picks they get for Lukoscius and/or King leaving.

This is the point.

We could have any number of picks and concessions but still screw it up. Not unhappy that GC is getting help, p!ssed off that we can't manage our club properly.

Better start in 2020

Neil Balme has won premierships at every club he has been at in a capacity bar one, can you name the clubs he has been associated with who he has won them with plus the one club he has not?

It's great to try and take the high ground but there is no logic involved in this instance.

Why would you use the same thought process?

One is the newest AFL club trying to establish itself in Rugby's heartland and they're under ten years old as a club. Clearly they're going to need help if the AFL want to grow the game nationally, which is obviously the point here. Of course that's not to say the club figureheads need to take some responsibility for the way things have panned out, but what's the alternative? They don't have one and they need assistance from the AFL until a solid foundation is there.

Compare that to us, the oldest sporting club in world's history, still relying on the AFL for financial assistance, received a priority pick as recently as 2009 and asked for another one which was rejected as recently as 2014. That's five years ago. Think about that for a minute. Our club started the AFL.

Without wanting to sound condescending, the 'logic' you speak of is completely absent in your post, not mine.

Comparing the two and using the same thought process is where you've gone wrong.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
